  1. discovery of the value was control on How Beer Gave Us Civilization · · Score: 0

Going further beyond the benefits they discovered, was the effect alcohol had on humans. People who started making alcohol found that it was very profitable, and people always came back for more. Soon it became evident that it could be used as a control mechanism, much like religion. Why do you think the earlier church organizations made and sold wine? Give the suffering fools enough alcohol, and they will be suppressed and easily manipulated. Then when they drink themselves to sickness, the church either condemned them, or came across as their saviors. Alcohol was used by the Egyptians to ensure slaves were kept under control, and somewhat "content" for continued work. Probably the most destructive, poisonous, and debilitating substance put in a human body; alcohol is the only thing keeping modern slavery in working order. We gladly work our entire lives without much to show for it in the end. While the elite, super rich sit back and watch us kill ourselves when we need to hit the bar to numb our angst (as the article states). Religion exists for controlling several billion, while alcohol and drugs keeps the rest under a pretty tight rein.

  2. interesting take on innovation and invention myths on Are There Any Real Inventors Left? · · Score: 0

Yesterday, I watched this video about Apple's claims of inventions. Although it is a kick in the ass for Apple, this guy is just trying to show they need to stop harassing and taking down competitors by using the broken patent law system. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wFeC25BM9E0

  3. Amazon mostly crap on Why Amazon Is Google's Real Competition · · Score: 0

I just happened to do a search on new release on Amazon. I found the results to be filled up with series of tv bygones and rereleased dvds. Mostly junk as far as I am concerned. I usually search for recent releases and then grab the ones I would like with torrents. Nothing seems to give me a reason to buy as I will only watch once and delete anyways. However, techdirt has surprised me lately with some cool tshirts and they certainly do the Cwf+RtB. Between slashdot and techdirt, I wonder where online sales will really go in the future. Newegg offers the best in prices for tech, amazon has the biggest selection. Amazon and google are secondary tools for finding interesting content, but for the most part, nothing sticks out. Content creators would heed well that we don't want their ridiculous release windows and offer a reason to purchase at a reasonable price. Otherwise, I just don't give a ?*!# about their products.

  4. question on komar.org on Ask Slashdot: How to Exploit Post-Cataract Ultraviolet Vision? · · Score: 1

I poked around komar.org and found it somewhat eery. Clicked on the first link(cataract surgery), then scrolled down---Whooboy... There is a lot of family info, and some basic content, but the site has not been updated for years. There remains the descriptions of diseases, which is certainly sad, along with detailed walk-throughs of an evolutionary new cataract surgery. Humbly, I enquire: Is it relevant, or even appropriate, to post a Ask Slashdot question that is laden with links to obviously stale content which also happens to include all sorts of donation opportunities? Don't think I will be buying Dirk a beer anytime soon.
