communism shouldn't kill people because it should only be taking stuff away from people who have plenty
And if those people (who have plenty) don't want to give up their stuff and they try to resist going to jail, THEN communism will kill them. There's no magical communism that hasn't been tried yet where people don't die as a result because the premise it's extremely flawed. You simply can't steal from people and expect them never to fight back.
Well then you're the only one in the BSG community who wasn't debating (the day after she died) what "form" she'd be back in, based on RDMs interviews. I guess hundreds of us (on the aicn talkback) must have misunderstood him when he said she'll be back. Oh wait...
No he didn't, that's why her return had such little impact for most. RDM made it quite clear that Kara would be back in "some form." We still don't know what form has been presented to us, she may even in fact be dead. But RDM was very ambiguous about it from the moment that ep aired so there was no surprise there.
And as far as the mystic/occult stuff, that's a big part of the whole Galactica: Visions, prophecies, destinies, gods, etc.
You're right, I've come to recognize that this is the case. But it was always the weakest part of the show to me. Early on, I assumed all of that was related to cylon implants (in the case of Baltar) or that maybe Roslin was a cylon (explaining her visions). That assumption made it an interesting science fiction story to me. It's still possible that my earlier assumptions are correct (based on how religion was handled in DS9), but I now suspect that you are correct in that the show is as goofy as it seems. Coming from the town that brought us scientology, it must all seem downright credible to them.
...and say that DVRs actually help the advertisers.
Before them, my mind was trained to tune out commercials because I was so sick of them. If I couldn't tune it out, I developed a very negative opinion of the companies advertised. Remember those Taco-Bell "drop the chulupa" commercials that aired twice every commercial break for every show for over a year? I haven't been to a Taco-Bell since. I'm actively not trying to boycott them, that was simply the result.
However, whenever I now see a commercial, it's new and fresh to me. I even sometimes find myself intentionally watching commercials in the same way that superbowl commercials fascinate so many. Novelty turns me on and repetition turns me off. That's just how I'm wired regardless of how many marketing types chant "repetition works" over and over.
Everyone brings up that scene, and yes it did have me on my feet (literally), but my favorite part of that episode was Tigh and Ellen. That was some really moving stuff.
1- Just because they think they're cylons doesn't mean they're cylons.
Yeah it does. RDM confirmed it. I didn't mind the finale so much when I saw it, because I assumed that they obviously weren't Cylons. It was too absurd. But then I read RDMs comments and the comments of the composer who was told to make Watchtower sound like something a Caprican singer might come up with independently out of the "ethereal mix," and that did it for me.
2- You just called Pythagoras "too stupid for you".
Perhaps not stupid, but he was a fringe cult nut-job. Most sensible people dismiss his mystic/occult side, except possibly for RDM and a large chunk of California.
I wish I had as clear as window into his mind as you do.
Read some of his interviews. All throughout the show he talks about trying to decide where he wants to take it. He tries things, goes down the road for a little while and then tries something else. That may be great for a show like Heroes, but BSG always came with the tag line "and they have a plan." I'm not sure who "they" are, but from what I've seen, it ain't the writers. After seeing the New Caprica internal squabbles among the cylons, I think any plan there may have been has been thrown out the window.
I stand corrected. Kind of makes you wonder why so much of New Mexico is a shit hole though. They're at the bottom of the list for so many other things.
We redistribute the wealth all the time, from rich states to poor states, but from poor people to rich people.
Really? It seems to me that it's NY and California (rich states) that always demand the largest share of the pie. These states are also home to liberals who'd like to tax me even more and restrict my freedom. They think everyone should pay to subsidize their social problems.
I also remember the debate after 9/11. People were arguing who should get the emergency preparedness funds. I recall many interviews with big-shot New Yorkers who claimed they need the biggest share, cause they're the biggest target and that the rest of the country was just being selfish. That argument never made sense to me cause if NY were locked down, the terrorists would just go somewhere else.
Also, NY is like a country that provokes all on it's own. Who's to say that Guliani, kicking Arafat out of that opera (or whatever) didn't in fact inspire the choice of NY as a target (or at least play a part). Why should I have to pay for another state's international grandstanding?
I got nothing against NY (I'm originally from there), I just think the rich cities having been stealing from the provinces since the beginning of time. And it's not right, regardless of whether it goes to the poor or the rich.
I got nothing against children themselves, but I am so sick and tired of politicians hiding behind, "but it's for the children," bullshit. The didn't seem to be nearly as many problems with children before we had millions of laws "for the children."
I think it was a creative decision. I think it was clear RDM didn't really know where he wanted to take it so he's just deciding to use up whatever story he's got left. If it weren't for the creative problems, the business end would take care of itself.
How was pulling the lyrics for "All along the Watchtower," out of the "ethereal mix," not jumping the shark. Honestly, I was rooting for Fonzie at the time. Fonzie's jump was nowhere near as ridiculous. Not to mention RDM pulling the final 4/5 out of his ass halfway through the season in a way that can't possible make sense to regular viewers.
I was on the fence to whether I'd tune in again after that disastrous season finale. It all came down to whether next season would be it's last or now. If I heard they were going for five seasons, I wasn't gonna bother with the fourth. But now I'd like to see how they're going to finish things up.
This show had some great moments. Even season 3 had some good ones. Exodus Pt. II was one of the finest hours in TV history. But RDM clearly had no idea of where he wanted to go with this show. Making those people (in the finale) into Cylons, based on a decision made halfway through season 3, just kind invalidated everything that came before to me. And the idea of pulling the lyrics for "All Along the Watchtower" out of the "ethereal mix" that we're all tapped into was just too stupid for me to ever look at this as a good show again (I read that one in an interview). Some people are just blown away by any manufactured twist. I prefer a degree of coherence to my storylines.
I dunno about the others, but I still feel ripped off buying that cheese from you guys, only to find a bunch of holes in it. It's called quality control.
How much of a "deviant" thinker or "rebel" can they really be? Aren't people that come up with the most inventive and "crazy" ideas a bit younger?
Are you talking bout the same kids who all get tattoos so they can be different? For a kid, being a rebel means fitting a certain rebellious image. They don't quite get the irony at their age. The whole point of public education was to turn them into a bunch of conformists who don't mind working menial jobs and we've succeeded wildly there. The true rebels are the ones who've managed to unlearn the drivel we teach our youth. That's why seniors can be such a hoot, they'll often say any wild shit.
The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.
As long as those good men aren't paving the road to hell. I think the vast majority of evil in the world is simply the blowback of stupidity. Evil would never succeed as well as it has if good, yet stupid, people hadn't called for action time and time again.
This sentiment made sense in revolutionary times where the average firearm a citizen possessed was roughly equivalent to what the armies of the time were using. That started to change around the civil war when you had Gattling guns and other weapons that required some professional training to use. Now that you're up against tanks, F-16 and apache helicopters, personal ownership of firearms is on par with the personal ownership of knives.
If you go back through history and examine periods where the weapons of the day required professionals, you will always see a drift towards authoritarianism. Make no mistake, we are oppressed and your guns will do nothing to change that fact. Only the times will. I do think everyone should own a gun, but only in the same sense that everyone should own a hammer and a knife. Wars now (including any war to take back our country) are information wars first and foremost. Our best bet is to educate people not to believe anything the government says to the point where it's instinctual in all citizens.
Exactly. I never want to hear that phrase again. WWII seems to be the only history we teach, so no one can claim ignorance, yet we still go on repeating the same fascist mistakes.
In this case it's not even a matter of belief. It's a matter of fact. The Holocaust happened and denying it is in itself illegal in some countries.
Making it illegal to deny the holocaust will only exacerbate the denials. I've never had any reason to doubt the details of the holocaust until they started arresting people for denying it. If they started arresting people for believing in UFOs, I'd probably start considering that they may be real as well. Why arrest someone for ridiculous beliefs unless they're not in fact so ridiculous? Hitler was evil and clearly killed many people, but arresting people for any mere belief is in itself an evil to be fought. You yourself even make the point earlier that "fear cannot be allowed to dictate what we say or teach."
I'm not saying that I believe that the holocaust didn't happen, but I have started to suspect that maybe the numbers were exaggerated or something. I simply do not know one way or the other anymore. Arresting people for denying it reminds me of closeted gay guys constantly reminding you of how much they love knockers. You know, the whole "thou does protest too much" thing.
And if you use standard accrual accounting methods then some estimate the debt at $49 trillion. Which is why people all over the world are running from the dollar.

I'm still stuck on UT2K4 cause I have seen many decent games since.

Then the series finale could suck as many balls as the season 3 finale!
I don't think all the prostitutes in Nevada can suck that many balls. It can only get better from here (says desperately to myself).
I think it was a creative decision. I think it was clear RDM didn't really know where he wanted to take it so he's just deciding to use up whatever story he's got left. If it weren't for the creative problems, the business end would take care of itself.

Apparently it got good again at the end of season 3
No, it got unbelievably stupid. Some people loved it, but it was a twist, for the sake of throwing in a twist. You didn't miss anything.
I was on the fence to whether I'd tune in again after that disastrous season finale. It all came down to whether next season would be it's last or now. If I heard they were going for five seasons, I wasn't gonna bother with the fourth. But now I'd like to see how they're going to finish things up.

9/11, 9/11, 9/11.
9/11.
Watch the shiny 9/11 go back and forth, back and forth. That is all.
p.s. 9/11

Right, and that's one of the reasons we've been unable to truly oppress them. It's also why the situation we're in was entirely foreseeable.
Armed citizens cant be oppressed.
