It was my understanding that B5 was pitched to all the major studios even before TNG came out. I liked both shows but it was clear that DS9 and Voyager were taking whole plot points from B5 towards the end. Not that I minded, I felt it really helped DS9 to have inter-galactic war arcs.
Agreed. B5 went south for me whenever it focused on Rangers and Technomages. Hell, there was even a lame-ass King Arthur episode. For me the show was about Vorlons, Shadows, telepaths and the Earth civil war. If these movies aren't going to focus on the TP war or pre-Shadow war events, then I don't see the point. I loved B5, but those follow-up movies simply weren't worth watching. I've never heard anyone express love for them. So far, this sounds like more of the same.
Then they should focus on patterns, rather than algorithms and data structures. That, at least, would serve some purpose. Computers are fast enough these days that we can now focus on higher level design.
True, I can have the crumbs off their table. But in the end, a lot of these referendums get overturned by the federal government if they don't like them. See: California, medical marijuana. And they never cover things like letting me bring deodorant on a plane. Or repealing the income tax "amendment."
I'd want more than the ability to verify my vote. I'd want to see my vote in context. Let me download a spreadsheet of everyone's votes so that I can see they add up to what I am told. You can do this and still maintain privacy. It doesn't stop them from adding phony voters, but it would guarantee that they couldn't flip your vote anymore.
A popular definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again, while expecting different results. Each time a democrat or republican gets into office, I see things get worse. Some illnesses just need to run their course. And only in a democracy do I lose my rights. This is a constitutional republic. So I can complain all I want, regardless of whether I vote. It's called the first amendment.
Third parties have no chance of getting elected given our current system. What the "least of two evil" crowd needs to realize is that if the republicrats see any movement in a particular third party, then they may try to co-opt some of their issues, making a third party vote more meaningful than many would expect. That's the reason to vote third party. It ultimately carries more weight than voting for the same party year after year.
I, however, am the lowliest of the low, according to many, since I don't vote anymore. I too use to vote libertarian across the board and may go back to that someday. I stay informed and part of me would love to be voting today (it's fun, I'm boring). But quite honestly, I just don't trust the machines anymore. I don't want my vote getting flipped. And machines aside, I think the whole system is just so thoroughly corrupt that my vote is in not voting. Voting in America is pretty much completely symbolic. As voter turnout continues to decline, it becomes meaningless for any "leader" to say he has a mandate. That mandate applies to everyone who plays the game and I'll no longer be that rat in a maze. I just don't see a way to reverse our current decline until the entire system is invalidated. Freedom is perhaps more a state of mind than a reality and as far as I'm concerned, I'm the only one who has authority over me. Those clowns in the government are just thugs with guns. And I see no point in fighting a losing war over symbolic titles.
Why is it I never find a reason to use mod points when I have them? And then the day after they run out, I see this. You're right on. There are powerful interests on both side and everyone has their facts. It's impossible to even come to a conclusion on global warming in this environment (pun not intended -- at first). I find that people who are certain that their side is right on this issue are simply politicizing the issue. It's the reason I put atheists in the same bucket as fundamental religious types. Some things are just too complicated to be understood by most humans. But that doesn't stop the people who are "certain" from making loud proclamations.
I moved to Colorado from New York about ten years ago with this in mind. But now, in my 30s I've really come to regret it. It's not even about the "things" there are to do. My New York friends barely have the money to do any of that. But there is a different energy and I feel it every time I go back to visit. Now that I've finally come to terms with that, I can't bring myself to move back when all my contacts are here and the cost of living is so high back there. It's too much of a gamble to move in that direction. But if you're in a cool city like that, I'd be hesitant to leave. I've met a lot of New Yorkers in Colorado and they've all echoed the same sentiments. The mountains alone, just can't compete. Find a place you love and develop your contacts there.
Thanks for the tips! I'll try to upload my pictures, although I won't be lugging a laptop. At the very least, I'll bring several memory cards to mitigate the risk.
Good to know, I'm going to Egypt in a month. Was it standard procedure to go through your photos? Was it random, or did they see your girlfriend take the picture? It would suck to lose any of the pictures that I'm going for. I plan to have my baksheesh pocket primed and ready, just in case, and I won't likely snap pictures in prohibited places, but would you recommend that I use the hotel computer to upload my pictures regularly? I'd rather not go through the hassle, but losing all my pictures (not to mention the camera) would be a bigger hassle.
Spoken like a true liberal.......... IMHO this is the way things should be. Don't like something about society? Propose a law!
Liberals = Big Government and more law. Conservatives = Small Government and maximum individual responsibility.
You, my friend, are the one who is speaking like a true liberal. Democracy in progress? As Marx said, it's the road to socialism. I'd prefer a constitution capable of protecting me from mob rule (not that we pay it much mind anymore in the states). Democracy is just a way for the rich and powerful to rule over the weak, while allowing the weak the illusion of control. Two wolves and a sheep deciding what to have for dinner, as the saying goes.
Agreed, that's a BS number. I don't know a single person who does this. Maybe some northeasteners who ride trains, but there's so little worth watching on TV these days, most people can easily wait till they get home to watch. That's not to say that I don't know anyone who's downloaded a show to their iPod, but it's always for the wow factor and they don't actually sit through watching it.
This is precisely why I watch less and less TV. Most shows are cop, doctor and lawyer shows. People are afraid of doctors (or at least associate them with bad news) and they don't like cops or lawyers. I never understood why anyone would want to spend their free time observing them. I think that Lost owes a great deal of it's success simply due to the fact that it is different in this respect. Same with HBO. Granted, in the latter case, mobsters are no better, but at least they're more interesting.
You might want to give Gentoo a shot. It all compiles from source and is currently using GCC 4.1. It's about as up to date as you'd like it to be. I have both 64-bit and 32-bit boxes and never had a problem with an install (can't say the same for updates, but probably better than most distros) Some would say it's too advanced for a noob, but I think there are so many clear wikis, installation guides and forum support, that it ends up being one of the easiest distros out there.
I use it for work, home development and even my HTPC, and it can easily support all kinds of devices. Just google "gentoo" and the device name you're interested in and you'll likely find a dedicated wiki.
I hated Wesley at the time, but that would interest me more than some Starfleet academy crap. Of course, isn't he on the road to becoming Q-lite right now?
Not that I'm arguing one way or the other (I have no strong opinion on the environment), but it was my understanding (grain of salt time - from the discovery channel) that global warming causes icebergs to melt, decreasing salinity at the poles, shutting down the gulf stream and then that leads to an ice age. I always thought that the two were suppose to go hand in hand. But then I won't argue with the media. They've always done a good job scaring me in the past.
You hit it right on the head, but it goes beyond that. Poorer societies pollute more. Our economy is on the verge of collapse. Push it over the edge with even more regulations and I am confident that pollution will end up increasing in the long run. Whether man-made or natural, technology and advancement are the only solutions at this point. We are now "all in" and we shouldn't let the environment call our bluff.
Uggh. I can't see what's in those other two tabs, but it still looks like I can't print multiple pages to one page and I'm guessing there's no simple straight forward double-sided print options. I agree with most peoples complaints on KDE but I hate having to open up konqueror to print web pages. I'm sick of saving OpenOffice documents (not sure if GTK or something else) to PDF so that I can open them in KPDF to print. Printing to kprinter is a pain too. Why are the KDE folks the only ones to get this right? That file chooser is an improvement however.
That's always been my problem with the whole Gnome vs KDE war. I want something in the middle. Clean and simple dialogs with an obvious "Advanced" button that has EVERY feature I could possible want. Gnome is the reason I hate Macs. KDE is the reason I hate windows.

Algorithms and data structures are not the same thing as design patterns. What's ambiguous about that?
Then they should focus on patterns, rather than algorithms and data structures. That, at least, would serve some purpose. Computers are fast enough these days that we can now focus on higher level design.

The next election may be in two years, but I'm afraid your deadline is tomorrow. You haven't worked long in this industry, have you? ;-)

Then I might be willing to vote for Secretary of State Cheney in the 2007 elections.
That is why our founding fathers set up our educational system.
They set up our electoral system. The educational system was set up by the socialists who came later.
