If TLC sold 10 million albums and only got $250,000 per person then TLC is to blame. The music industry is just like any other business, you negotiate your best deal and live with it.

Sure it may not be ethical, but the goal for any company is to make money, they will take advantage of you if you let them. That goes for any industry, not just the music biz.

Sometimes I feel like a leech, I use all this opensource stuff and don't really give anything back. Sure I've plunked down money for the last couple versions of RedHat, but most of that went to the retailer.

Anyways...I see people like RMS who donate some great stuf that I use daily (emacs, gcc) and even though I don't like everything he says, I am gratefull.

I know that Linux / Unix has IPv6 support in the BSD4.x socket stuff but I'm wondering if the boys from Redmond have it together with the whole winsock mess.

Hmmm...how can we bilk the general public out of their hard earned greenbacks with an IPv6 scare.:)

I wonder why we can't settle on both KDE and GNOME as the standard Linux desktop. I kinda like the freedom of choice option. In fact, why not throw WindowMaker and Afterstep in the mix too. It seems to me that one of the major benefits that Linux has to offer over the commercial OS's is the freedom to tweak it into whatever you want it to be.

Newbies will do more playing than anything else when they first get a PC. One of the first things that newbies do under windows is to go in and associate sounds with certain events...Well...I think newbies would get a real blast out of being able to go in and play with several different desktops. The trick is to make it "stupid simple" for them to do that. I think we are well on our way.

    Viva la choice....

It should be no real surprise that he wouldn't find Linux stimulating. I read an interview with Dennis Ritchie a couple months ago and he didn't bash Linux but he said that he really hadn't given it much attention. I do think that he was stating his *opinion* which may be right or wrong. He mentioned that he had looked at some of the code so he wasn't just spouting off. I think the Linux community should take this to mean that the OS needs to mature a bit, we are not there just yet.

The real sad thing is that there is no threat that EDS will tell MS to shove it and take their order for 100,000 desktop OS's elsewhere. MS is holding them hostage. I really can't wait for someone (Linux or whoever) to come in and provide a viable alternative.

I'm running Solars X86 on one of my PC's and as a result of that I belong to a Solaris mailing list. One of the guys on the list works for Sun and he has the same attitude towards Linux as Doug Michels. I think it's a natural reaction. Linux gets a TON of free press, most of it good, and the press can't get enough if it. Meanwhile these old-time Unix guys are watching this and doing a slow burn.

My problem with these Linux-on-the-desktop discussions are that the Linux community has just recently begun to make a *real* effort to compete with commercial products for the desktop. The goal of the Linux development team was to make an OS that WORKS, the GUI's and ease-of-install has to come next. I wouldn't expect any Linux distribution to be as easy to use as a Mac or a Windows workstation, or as easy to install. Linux needs a little time to mature.
