  1. Don't know about smoking.. on The Effects of Smoking on Your Computer? · · Score: 1

Not sure what smoking can do to a computer, the company I work at has a strict policy about only smoking outside. But we have a cafe here with a computer for them to take email orders on. They used to keep the poor thing next to a deap fryer till it died.
Now everyone, all at once eewww for poor me when I had to open it to diagnose it.
We ended up throwing it out, but I was always curious what would happen if I took a match to it.

I've heard this one somewhere before as well. I think it had something to with trying to drive another company group out of business. Like companies A and B both sell Mr. Widget (TM). It costs both company roughly the same (say $5) to make them. Company A sells them for $7 while Company B is rich and sells them at $1 per because they can absorb the loss w/o a problem and want to drive company A out of business.

Then again, I could have that completely wrong.

I read this in a book (illusions, don't remember the author) about the golden rule that I always think is pretty funny. Suppose we have a worshiper of the great crocadile god who's greatest aspiration in life is to be thrown (as a sacrafice) kicking and screaming into a pit of hurngy crocs. Should this worshipper go and do it to others because this is what he wants done to himself.

Part of the point is that not everyone wants the same thing, so that rule is just a bit to broad (or maybe peoples beleivfs are too broad to be covered by one simple rule)

The above makes no sense within the context of itself.

Something that came to mind a while ago was what if they heros never really made it out of the matrix?
It goes something like this, the AI relizes that some of its, um, parts aren't quite fitting in right so creates a seperate reality for them to function in.
Its still a crappy enough life to keep the parts convinced its real and the matrix gets a few more parts to use.

Of course this could lead to all sorts of plot nightmares, but its an idea.

Has anyone thought of setting up a counsling/mentor program for the lonely people like this who use the internet?

Granted it would require thosew who need help to seek it out, but something like that would (hopefully) allow for: getting people to meet other people at least over the internet, maybe once its grown, and there are enough people in one area allow them to get together physically. The reasoning behind this is, as more than a few stated, these kids were almost completely disconnected from the rest of there school, their fellow students just didn't seem real at best and if they could be shown that people are real, maybe it would help balance them out or at least give them someone to talk to.

Maybe such a program isn't feasable and I know its no substitute for good parenting but maybe those of us who have been in (or close to)a similiar situation could help before something like this happens again.
