  1. Look to your Southern Neighbors on Building a Town-Wide LAN? · · Score: 1

I work with a gentleman from Concord, MA. The town of Concord just completed plans for a town-wide LAN consisting of fiber and are in the process of implementing the system. So, it is feasible and doable. And best of all, you have a model of how it can be done.

  2. Perl Class? on Ask Larry Wall · · Score: 5, Interesting

At the college level, the programming classes are taught using C,C++,Java, etc. Do you see a place for perl being taught in the classroom? I find that it is often overlooked and dismissed as simply a scripting language.

  3. Re:dead language on Perl for Web Site Management · · Score: 1

Perl is dead just about as much as C was when Java came on the scene.

Perl will ONLY be dead when people stop using it.

  4. Broken System on Liquid Audio Sues In Pitiful Attempt to Appear Relevant · · Score: 1

The patent system used to promote innovation and research. Now it is a broken system that is only used to fuel future legal battles.

I once believed in the system because it rewarded those that came up with new ideas, but I am disgusted now how people try to use it to make a quick buck in the future.

I wonder how the system will have to change to be effective again? Or perhaps some patents will just have to be not granted because they are obvious, or just plain stupid.

  5. Look at VESTA on Designing a New Version Control System? · · Score: 2, Interesting

I use Vesta at work and find that is is better than CVS. One of the major differences is that it is also a build environment. That means that you along with your code, you can have the compiler versions that you used to build the code with. Vesta does the building within itself and then "ships" the executable to where you need it.
It is also easy to work concurrently.

I believe that you can also do the following: User X checks out and edits file A.
User Y checks out and edits file B.
User X calls user Y to test file A's changes with file B's changes.
User Y tells vesta to build with the checked out version (X's checkout) of file A.
User Y builds and tests the two edits together.

One other important feature for large projects is that Vesta intelligently caches created files. So, if User X and Y are working on the same project, then they can save on compile time by only creating files once and sharing them if possible. This is a necessary feature in large projects.

Anyhow, check out the webpage at http://vesta.sourceforge.net.

  6. Re:Any labor unions using this? on Maglev Chip Finds Niche in Power Tools · · Score: 1

The article wasn't about being lazier. It was about being more efficient in manufacturing practices. The tools seem to make the jobs go faster and probably avoid some of the maintenance that goes into the old rotary style tools.

And the article wasn't about floating tools. It was about adopting linear motor technology (orginally invented for trains I guess) to replace inefficient machinery in factories.

And furthermore, the local unions will probably be happier that better equipment is being used. This technology isn't replacing a human process, it is replacing a machine so it dosen't make workers any lazier. They will simply have to learn to use the new machine.

  7. More Permanant than Chalk? on Warchalking Visual Cues To Urban WLANs · · Score: 2, Insightful

It seems that this is an interesting idea, but lacking in usability. There are two major problems as I see it.

1.) The chalk will be easily washed away, and the location lost. (not to mention they warn the local network administrators)

2.) You have to just walk around and randomly find one of these markings.

A better solution would be somewhere online that warchalkers could upload locations (GPS maybe) and then you could easily find the access point nearest you.

There are some sites that advertise resonable prices. Check out www.dcginc.com for some Alpha-based systems. Most are under the $3000 range and there is a decent one at the $2000 mark. I don't think that these prices are terribly unreasonable. -Rg
