spread their crappy propaganda around like manure. If anything will ever unite radical terrorists with fearful, already-on-the-brink Islamic nations, the stream of propaganda coming out of Afghanistan & even Pakistan would be it. Not that I have any fear anyway (laughable that it could ever seriously escalate, but time will tell I suppose), but I think it's time we spread some of our own counter-propaganda.
Anybody else care to notice that EVERY single protester in the other nations is MALE? Guess women don't have any say in the matter eh? If you're not already convinced, then this alone should say a lot to the world about how the Taliban feels toward women (besides the videos you can find on the net of their beatings and public executions). Oh well...guess funny pictures in the spirit of mockery are better than nothing.....
No offense, but you sound terribly inexperienced with the US infantry and our military forces in general.
Disclaimer: I was an infantryman in the USMC, so besides my bias, I do feel at least ONE of us can speak from experience.
In contrast to most of the military forces on the planet, ours are well trained (in most cases VERY well trained), well equipped (especially more so than any army we would be up against), and plenty motivated. The average grunt is nowhere near as stupid as most geeks at/. seem to believe (I'm not the only techno-jarhead that frequents this site & besides, stupid ones DON'T SURVIVE!). You seem to imply that irrational zealotry or religious fanaticism can overcome our own soldiers' determination, and here is where I take issue with you most of all. I can say firsthand that if you were on the front lines you would be AMAZED at how well you would put to use every skill you had, including ones you weren't aware of, just to save your own life or your fellow soldier's.
Perhaps it's just me and some other small minority in the service, but some of us are very capable of being peaceful, reserved, deep thinkers that (at the same time) don't lose sight of the oath that we took or the price that it may demand. Oh yeah, we're still human, we question things, bitch a lot, and just wish we were home with a beer watching the game like anybody else. However, any soldier (or human being for that matter), when faced with combat, would rather win first and live with the decision later. I personally feel that if anyone has a right to comment negatively on our nations motives, it should be veterans before anyone else, including our elected officials.
Sorry...went off a bit, but I hope I clarified a few things for ya. Trust me though, our troops have plenty of resolve and determination, not to mention NONE of the fear you indirectly imply they should have. Peace;)
I think it's been said already, but I'll say it myself once more.
It should be obvious by now that it was here already or at the very least, on its way here anyway. With or without our responses, terrorists and other anti-US groups have been working on their little agendas for some time (OK Fed. Bldg, previous WTC attacks, embassy bombings worldwide, tourist hostages...etc). Other countries have had at least as many attacks as we have had, Japan even had the subway gassing. It sounds to me as if you have (no offense) kind of had your head in the sand the last 10 years. That's okay, as that is EXACTLY the kind of separation from all these horrible goings-on that America has been trying to provide its citizens anyway (so you're normal and have been seeing just what the govt has wanted you to see), except now it's all been brought to the front page. I'm sure you're aware that by the time newspapers print anything is been known for some time already anyhow.
Western culture has been becoming more scrutinized and outright attacked at an ever increasing pace already. Most Americans were just SHIELDED from it by the media and govt. It's okay, they had your best interests in mind, I'm sure:)
you wasted your closing argument with this little beauty: "Oh, I also like how Theo sounds like a jerk, as usual, LOL"
I don't see where he was acting like a jerk at all. That's part of the problem with this industry (and the world in general, I might add). Some people cry and whine about how important they are as users/customers, and that every business they frequent or do business with should KISS THEIR ASS and be thankful for their patronage. Then without skipping a beat, these same fools usually followup with a diatribe about how the "market" will decide and they'll "vote with their dollar" and all that. I say... go ahead. You are the kind of people that haven't or wouldn't pay for OpenBSD ANYWAY !!! So in closing, you're not wanted, you're a non-customer.
Sorry....went off a little bit, but anyway I hope you get my point. He may be somewhat abrasive, even a little dry and too uptight for your delicate ego, but (here's the important part) I didn't see him attacking anyone or being an asshole to anyone in any of his statements. If you need coddling, however, in order to accept someone's products or ideas, then there are plenty of salesmen at your local mall that would LOVE to kiss your ass to get you to listen to them. Theo doesn't seem to be that type of person (although he can be..outspoken:)
you stated "Let me guess---is it his assumption that these much-vaunted *BSDs don't have package managers such as rpm, deb, etc., to handle dependencies?"
I don't see how anyone following this thread could have missed the fact that package mgmt was already brought up in a small fashion and was quickly dismissed (as it wasn't really my point anyway)...lemme dig that back up from my initial post:
so claiming someone wouldn't know about "much-vaunted *BSDs" ports/packages systems just doesn't fly here, unless somebody isn't reading then entire post before responding;)
Great points and well put, seriously. Answered some of my questions too.
Still, it doesn't change the fact that what seems like 9/10 useful programs or just plain fun programs that I want to try need something specific to linux. Whether it's easy to code around or not doesn't change the fact that apparently most everyone codes specifically for linux. Go to the sdl site and try most of those games out. Some of the better plugins for gkrellm come to mind also. I use Sylpheed for mail, and although it's a fine client I wanted to try some other gui based mail clients. Every nice one that I found (from descriptions in web sites and screenshots) required linux. I use *BSD's linux emulation and even after playing with makefiles and configuring options, none would compile. Same with the newer Gecko based web browsers (galeon and skipstone).
Most of this is useless eyecandy-driven desktop fluff, but I'll never get to put it on my desktop as I don't run Linux. Sure I have all I need on my desktop anyway, but it is a bit of a downer to see all these great products that COULD be cross*nix compatible, but the folks coding em either 1) don't care or 2) don't know any better. Same results either way. Kinda smacks of hypocrisy in some small sense, as a few years back (when I did run Linux) most users were complaining about all of the MS stuff that wasn't cross platform and should have been (mostly formats, not applications)...but I'm starting to rant...thanks for your explanation (really:), I just hope it falls on the ears of those I'm complaining about.
I agree with you about not ever needing to compile, but I think his real point was not any of BSD's strong points (features included, packages/ports, etc) but rather that Linux is way out in left field as far as "across the board" unix compatibility.
I know what you're thinking...what across the board unix compatibility? right? That's the whole point, many of the unices and free clones can share most of the programs off one can download off of the internet, unless they're full of Linux-isms. These linux-isms are popping up everywhere now, and just plain causing crossplatform (or at least differing unix platforms) problems.
I'm sure this will be modded to lowest plane of/. hell for attempting to pick on the One True O.S. but it has to be said, I for one am TIRED of downloading programs only to find some strange library from some linux install is needed (and I'm greatly oversimplifying here).
cmon, don't believe it. I could probably use google and go research it, but I feel it would be a waste of time, simply because it's GOT to be false.
The government (heck, any investor for that matter) puts a lot of investment dollars into MANY kinds of research. Some if obviously worthless, some promising in the distant future, and some enticing but not likely. I find it hard to believe that anyone would react that way to such a story. I mean really, how could someone be smart enough to even PURSUE such an endeavor and then turn around and say that about one of the potential results? Ludicrous, I tell you. Not to mention many of these things involve committees or some such group, so I don't believe for a second that ONLY some graduate student intellectual types are the only ones capable of recognizing good research. Sorry, can't buy it.
try ssh, and with today's OVERPOWERED computers..we could have a ball serving all kinds of files...no more long searches through some bbs...let's do it right...post about it here..let's talk about this !
should we get a web site, start a mailing list, and build a slashdot bbs for a few locales? Cmon post about it here...talk it out...let's get this going..I for one would love to (in time & with preparation host a bbs and get to eventually meet local/.'ers and other geeks in my state)
so let's do this
course..I'm still playing doom & doom2 (and heretic and all that)...except in gl now:)
but it would be fun to do locally, not to mention easier to do locally than some web based international thing
course, then all the linux zealots (sorry to you normal linux lovers, it's the 10% that piss me off) would just whine "can't we put this in a BSD section"....christ, that's what put all this good info hidden away like this in the first place.
I just feel good about using an O.S. that really pisses off all of our local trolls. It has to be said, have you noticed they come out of the gate full of piss and vinegar every time a *BSD is even MENTIONED, let alone given a full story? This tells me the trolls are even MORE worried about its progress than the acceptance of Linux. Hehehehe, and all they can do is cut/paste/reiterate the same old posts. Now they're even running them through different translators (I loved the 'jive' version !). I use OpenBSD myself, but when I used Free, it was still everything that you stated above, a damn fine o.s. Let's salute our trolls, as they appear to be a good benchmark for *BSD's success (just in inverse proportions).
I've seen those (and filtered them out of course..too much to read) for over 4 years at 2 different cable isps....I don't think that you're on the right track with this. I've used a strong ruleset in OpenBSD with nothing but the sshd running (no inetd/portmap/httpd/sendmail/etc) for over two years and still see them get denied...just don't worry about them.
as I understand it...Jihad means "to strive", and Muslims should strive to the best of their ability to follow the 5 pillars of their faith among other beliefs (hadith/sunnah) as laid out for them in the Islamic belief system. Without going into a lot of detail (it wouldn't go over here well anyway I imagine) all Muslims are 'submitters' to God, and striving to do their best (as vague as it may sound) is just another one of the behavioral/lifestyle recommendations given in their holy book. How and why the concept of striving to please God and be a good follower of Islam ever mutated into the present day (MIS!)understanding of jihad by the..shall we say.. UNINFORMED people of the world today, I can only speculate. I'm certain some wacko terrorist coined the buzzword during some media interview (given for his "cause" I'm sure) and it just stuck (no thanks to our present day media blitzes we see with every story now...man I'm sick of business buzzwords). Sad, really, how a few bad apples are not just spoiling the bunch, they are singlehandly changing the entire world's understanding of what appears to be a relatively harmless, if not accomodating religion with an amazing and troubled history...tsk tsk. EDUCATE YOURSELVES, PEOPLE !! Don't let Fox or CNN do it for you. Peace...oh yeah tweek, post a response if you would like me to zip up (or tar/gzip:) some copies of different holy books from major religions and pass em along...I have always studied them, and would be more than happy to pass along some (fairly complete) HTML versions from 3-5 diff religions.
the question wasn't "so guys, what do you recommend I use for routing purposes"...so keep your personal prefs just that, personal. If the guy writes/. this question, chances are he ALREADY KNOWS that the free unices can do it. Don't you spammers and trolls realize that you're ads won't get modded up to most readers thresholds?
