That story has a totally misleading title. I even filled a complaint about it in BBC Complaint section, which follows:
---- cut & paste --------
I'm writing because I feel cheated by the above news story, which is entitled "Experts create invisibility cloak". Is it now the most popular story in BBC's website, according to the top stories link, but it is totally misleading.
INVISIBILITY means "not visible; not perceptible by the eye", that CAN NOT BE SEEN. Now, the story isn't about making something NOT BEING SEEN, but about a cloack that deflect microwaves! The story even reads:
"In principle, the same theoretical blueprint could be used to cloak objects from visible light. But this would require much more intricate and tiny metamaterial structures, which scientists have yet to devise."
So, the title could be easily corrected to "Experts give huge step towards invisibility", but to assert that they "created an invibility cloack" is totally wrong and misleading. BBC has alwasy been a brand synonymous to credibility in news. However, I'm sure that if stories like that keep hiting the front page, just to attact readers, that will suddenly deteriorate. I'm ashamed. ------------------
I feel so pissed off when I click a link to a news story that has the clear intention of misleading. Praise God that I don't watch Fox News.
... if the equipment will come with Linux pre-installed. They will end up being replaced by the user by an easily bought U$2 pirated version of Windows XP anyway, sold in every corner of São Paulo. Or do you expect everyone will care to install Wine to play starcraft of use MSN?:D
P.S. - I'm Brazilian and despite the fear of fraud, like it is happing with the Zero Hunger program, I strongly support this initiative.
IMHO, what make BitTorrent so good is how fast it is to download files from the network. And the reason for this is that the average user isn't seeding tons of files at the same time and because of that, their upload bandwitdth is concentrated in just a couple of files.
For example: when a legal downlodeable ISO file is released, I open BitComet and start downloading only that file. Although I have plenty of other.torrents here, I don't seed them. By doing that, the.ISO is spread much faster, because I'm using 95% of my upload speed to send that and only THAT file. And yes, I wait until I have uploaded at least the same ammount as I downloaded before canceling the task.
The opposite happens to Emule. Since the average user has loads of file in his download queue and all that stuff is automatically "seeded", the upload speed is distributed among so many files that it is difficult to get a decent download rate.
I think that the beauty of BitTorrent is to help people distribute NEW content quickly. If you want a searchable and descentralized network, stick to emule.
So, I suppose I should spend $$$$$ in a Xbox than $$$ in Windows XP just because I'm not fond of old Bill... Linux isn't yet suited for gaming, live with it!
It's even worse than whining because Mario Bross was never released to the Genesis or Sonic was never released to the SNES... Because THEN you would have to buy a new console to play your favorite game.
I use windows most of the time and haven't lose a moment of sleep either. I was careful enough to install a decent firewall, email soft and anti virus in my system, as well to avoid opening emails from strangers. Never got a single virus here.
Give any linux distro to a not so careful guy, who will probably not care about updating the kernel and some daemons, and you will end with a exploit ridden box, with legs wide open for remote access with root privileges.
It's not about what system you use, it's about how you manage it.

So we are talking about a tube with some air in it in where a capsule moves.
Now, imagine that as the capsule moves, the fraction of air that is still in the tube must be pushed forward, until that there are so much pressure that the capsule can't move anymore..:D Instead, the capsule is shot back like a pressure gun:D
And I doubt that creating vacuum in a tube so long would burn only 2% of energy used for other systems...

Scroll down to the bottom of the page and click on "Vote Aqui!!" to see how the eletronic ballot looks like.
That's the site of TSE , the Superior Electoral Court, a part of the Judiciary responsable just for the election.
In the botton of the ballot screen you can see the numbers of the candidates.
Press "BRANCO" to vote for no one (your vote is computed to the most voted).
Press "NULO" to nulify your vote. Your vote is computed to no one.
Press "Confirma" to confirm your vote, after choosing the candidate number.
You can vote just in the party by typing just the first 2 digits of the candidate (not useful for president for obvious reasons).
The order you must type is as follows: Deputado Federal (Federal Deputy) Deputado Estadual (State Deputy) Senador (Senator) Senador (Senator) Governador (State Governor) Presidente (President)
Notice you must vote for 2 different senators.
There are a bunch of information and statistics on the TSE site that may be worthy checking out too (only in portuguese, unfortunately).

Brazilians that live in other countries aren't required to vote. And if they WANT to, they can vote only for President.

Remember this post from Slashdot ? It is about Macromedia wanting Flash to be used to design the entirety of a site.
So, I don't suppose Google can fetch the URLS inside a Flash file (correct me If I'm wrong), so, if Macromedia's dream become true, how would Google cope with it?
BTW, how any search engine would deal with such a catastrophe?:D
First of all, I don't support, endorse or agree with terrorists in any mean.
But USA is attacking a country, not a terrorist group alone. That can be easily used to subvert more people to fight against USA.
I understand that something should be done to let them know that they can't do that without heavy consequences, but I'm trying to say that these military actions won't have the expected effect: to end terrorism. It can work just like the opposite way.
Don't blame me for saying that, blame the fanatics.
If I was Osama Bin Laden, I would be saying: "Hey Afghain people, behold USA, enemy of the world. They are killing us, they blame innocent people for they disastrous inteligence. They are the enemy of our people, our nation, our beliefs..."
See? It's a good content for a speech that could be used to gather even more people to fight USA.
You must understand that there are ordinary people who believe and support Osama's doings. Kill their leader, and I'm sure they will be interested in "avenging" him. It's a vicious circle. Kill one and create one thousand.
Perhaps, the best way to fight these would be to help the poorer populations, so they will have something to care about and not kill themselves in a hijacked plane. Can you see the people from Afeghanistan? They are as poor as someone can be - what is left from them? If they die, they won't loose so much (because of their beliefs in paradise).
Perhaps if USA spent their money in those poor countries, tempted by fanatical organizations, they would have much more profit in long terms.
I'm not talking about the war against Taliban or Afghanistam themselves... If you have been watching news lately, you wil see that part of the plot took place in Canada, Germany, France etc.
I'm trying to say that even if USA droped a nuclear bomb that nuked the whole Afghanistan (including Osama Bin Laden), there are terrorists, either from Al Qaeda or not, spread on all over the world.
And to freeze their financial movement isn't enough. I wouldn't need so much money to build a homemade bomb and explode myself into a public building. It is easy to learn from the internet how to build bombs and other artifacts that can be extremely harmful.
Osama is now stating that he swear by God that American people will not live safely, and I must agree with him, because the fear of terror is almost as bad as the terrorists attacks themselves.
Now, can you get what I said? You can bomb the entire Afghnistain and Osama Bin Laden altogheter - there are more fanactics settled in other parts of the world, and every ordinay person motivated by fanatical beliefs can blow himself in a terrorist attack without needing a terrorist network or plenty of financial resources.
So, USA is just fueling them with the hate necessary to blow themselves "for the case". That's why I'm saying that this are going to be an endless war.
I'm not NORTH-AMERICAN, but I think that this attack against Afghanistan will turn into a very bad thing.
We are talking about FANATICAL people. Kill them, and more will come. To attack Afghanistan will only raise their hate against American. More fanatical groups/nations can follow...
What USA expects? If they bomb montains trying to destroy the tunnels used by the terrorists, how will Americans be sure if Osama was killed or not? And, if they find it dead, there will still be dozens of Osama's followers that will be feed with anger and hate to plan even more shocking terrorists attacks.
Bomb their power plants, training camps and communication system. Ok, this will freeze Afghanistan counter-actions for a moment, but will it stop terrorists? I doubt it.
North-American citizens will turn into a paranoid society, fearing every ordinary box left aside in a metro station or building. Is that what the Americans expect? This is what we can call "end of terror" ?
I'm not (totally) against the military action against Afghanistan, but I don't see it as a solution - instead, I think that this will make things even worse in long terms.
I hate having to watch these kind of news poorly translated by local televisions. Please, could anyone post some URL's where we can watch live broadcasted news coverage from TV (such as American or British tv's).
There is something I never understood about SETI. Suppose there were the same anthenaes and systems used by SETI in Alpha Centauri, used by another civilization.
Would they be able to receive our own signals (TV, Radio and such) and interpret them as an inteligent signal comming from our solar system? Would they think this could be some sort of interference instead? What do our waves have that makes them an "inteligent" form of transmission?
