Yes, this is true. WinXP's Clear Type is more advanced than the traditional anti-alias true type rendering, but it is valid ONLY for LCD screens, *not* for CRTs. I think this post here is pretty informative on Clear Type...:)

The CONTENT of the windows are just a picture. The window manager is real and fully interactive. It is just a demo/proof of concept to show that the window manager/environment works. They had to put something inside these windows, so they added this picture that looks like a real content, only it is not interactive, it is a picture.

Actually BeOS had quite some support with BeOS 5 and the third party drivers found on BeBits. I agree with BeOS 4 and 4.5 did not have many drivers, but version 5 was really good at the time. Now, it is 2 years with no BeOS official updates, so naturally, it is already out of date..:(

Please go to BeNews and read the explanation for these two BlueOS screenshots. The second shot uses a "dummy" content for its windows.
Also, click here to read the Interview with the BlueOS project leader at OSNews.
>If half the people out there can't read the article because it's Slashdotted.
This is the fine line. OSNews is *NOT* Slashdotted. Slashdot has linked us over *25 times* the last few months, and we were never down because of it. We are always prepared for Slashdot. We have the bandwidth needed for Slashdot's links and we delivered accordingly.
Each time I put a bigger article online, I calculate what we can handle and what not. If our bandwidth can't handle something, I just do not put it online, or I use one of our 4 mirrors (OSNews uses some mirrors for some of its images).
So, your excuse does not hold. At least in this case.
Mr Quick, if you can, PLEASE edit OUT the copy/paste you did on Slashdot of the OSNews article. The bandwidth problems we have is mostly when we have MANY and BIG images on our articles, NOT on articles like this. Please edit out our article from the Slashdot forum. It is a violation of our copyright. You should have asked us first...:(
Are you sure 4.5-FINAL was released? The RC3 came out just last night and the group was scheduling about RC4 next week. And now Slashdot is reporting on 4.5-Final? I am not sure if this is a fake or not... The FreeBSD web site has not been updated yet. Waiting...
In the beginning I had the word as "ass" (you know me, I tell the things the way they are), but then I thought that the Slashdot web developers may have added a filter, so I changed it to "a$$".:P
Dumb a$$. You have no idea the accomplishments done by Kurt in his OS. Getting the OS *so much down the line*, the kernel, vm, fully attributed 64bit journaled fs, gui all written by a single person, it is almost a life's achievement. A LOT of things are still needed to be done just because the OS development is a vast amount of work. Either wake up, or try to learn C/C++ programming a bit, and then you will see how deep the rabbit hole goes.
Just 10 days ago, OSNews also hosted a very interesting interview with AtheOS' Kurt Skauen. Kurt talked about binary compatibility, gcc 3 and a lot of other things.
Yes, ext3 was missing because ext3 is nothing but ext2 with journal. I wanted my article to be closely to the more modern filesystems.
For the record, my personal best from the 3 of them btw, is XFS.
Yes, before you start replying here, please READ that Byte article. It will show you what really happened with the Ms antitrust case in the issue of the "secret license", and it will explain one of the fundamendal and most important reasons why Be was driven out of business and BeOS never became mainstream.
The BeOS has solved the problem, years ago. The BFS has integrated all these features into the OS itself, so all applications are making use of them. The Byte.com BeOS articles from Scot Hacker are also a must read!
So, I was always wondering if there is going to be a 'real' integration between OpenAL and SDL. Currently, a lot of people are just using SDL_mixer which does a pretty good job for little shareware/oss games, but when it comes to commercial sound, 3D positioning and all these buzzwords, SDL needs OpenAL to break through against the goodies of DirectX has to offer.
Also, what about a wrapper against D3D? There is currently a nice integration with OpenGL, when SDL needs to use 3D acceleration, but under Windows (where a lot of SDL games already exist) most of the coders are using D3D. Also, based on the fact that D3D 8 is not as bloated as previous versions, a wrapper for other OSes could be easily achieved (IMHO).
Last question, again on the spirit of 'SDL Vs DirectX', are there any plans for more support for more input devices, like force feedback wheels etc.
Take care and thank you for all the hard work you have put on SDL the last few years. (and also greatly thank you for the BeOS port!:)
Can someone come up with the a cleaner/faster/better architecture than this bloat called X?
BeOS rules because of its desktop and its responsiveness. If Linux find the backers to completely drop X (and yes, losing backwards compatibility unfortunately) and create a new Windowing System, then, truly, Linux will be ready for the desktop (and of course making easier the compilation of the apps/kernel for the newbies)

No problem Colin. :-)
Yes, that's this Eugenia. :)
But, I wrote both the original article and the Slashdot submision. So I guess it is a fair use. ;-)
