You can always make a light steam streaming box with a controller in the TV room and move the gaming PC to your home office. Steam in home streaming works surprisingly well. That way you can play games and do whatever work you do in the office and still play some of your games on the TV like co-op games and TV appropriate games. She can keep the TV room looking nice and everyone can be happy.
eventually we will all be on fiber anyway but fear of power surges isn't a valid reason to move away from wired. if you had to you could get a surge protector with an ethernet port on it and run the modem into it before going out to your router.
you, camembert, should look into installing xbmc on your appetv. you have a western digital tv live that plays your local content but with a quick install of xbmc you could do exactly what the western digital tv live does from the same apple tv. no need for two devices that do the same thing. anyway, have a great day!
This software is really cool, I use it with great success everyday and it is encrypted. It works over a local network or the internet so it can make use of a gigabit network. If you were talking about your next door neighbor then there is no reason you couldn't just set up a wired connection or wireless bridge between your houses and let it go to town. This can also run off a raspberry pi so it will use minimal power. The raspi wont run at gigabit speeds but it is low power. Give it a shot its free!
That is exactly what i do. I dont like the netflix's or the Hulu's. I dont allow it in my house. Right now i dont have a bandwidth cap so it doesnt matter too much but i dont want the wife and kids to get used to something that is not gonna stick around when the cap comes back. The only thing we stream is youtube because youtube any other way is crazy. I keep a local copy of anything that is worth keeping and the rest i dont care for. If it doesnt come over the air or from good ole tpb then it doesnt come.
take a look at bittorrent sync.

with cheap hardware and multiple locations(the locations could be virtual servers at different data centers around the world.) you could set up your own cloud for the cost of the hardware. run the host machines on your favorite flavor of linux and configure the different machines to do the rest. you add stuff to your onsite machine and it gets distributed securely and quickly to the other nodes. ive been playing around with the software for a week now but it seems to be exactly what we needed as a community.
agreed. speaking with family and friends, ive asked if we should start voting to lose our freedoms faster so it hurts more and something will happen but ive been told that i dont need to do that because there are enough stupid people that will do it for me.
if you dont want to root your devices that is fine but you will have to take what they give you. if you dont want to do the work then you dont get the prize. that should be the slogan of life. you dont get something for nothing. apps are the same way. if you arent willing to look around and find the way that accomplishes the goal you have then you will have to deal with the adds and the services that you dont want. you say you are an ios fan thats great but i for one am glad that an alternative exists along side such a device that we can tinker with. being able to tinker with it may not be for everyone but its part of the fun for many of us.
does anybody else feel like we are living something like the movie v for vendetta. how far can we go til we have had enough. unfortunately the leaders of our respective countries are not changing things rapidly enough. that would break the system because people would be forced to rise up and take over but with this little by little crap we will lose everything that makes life nice. i know that this first sale crap isnt going to affect our daily lives for the most part but where do we draw the line? how far gone does it need to be? I want to see some change around here. this is too much. what is it about people that we feel that we must put laws over people so that they obey? what makes humans that way? its time to get sociological.
looks like someone's feelings were hurt. developers need to start from here on out with the idea that people are going to pirate stuff. make it free in the first place and find a different way to make money. stop fighting against the way technology moves. bit-torrent technology is amazing. as time goes on people figure out new ways to do stuff and its time for the producers of software/movies/music to realize that they are prey and move on to a different business model.
I got rid of cable but comcast offers the blast package that comes with cable and internet for 10 dollars less than what i was paying for just internet. i thought to myself that even though i wouldnt be using the cable part of the package ten dollars less a month for internet service was better than what i had before so i got it. my wife uses the cable but i hate coming home to see that she has been watching that crap all night and i partially feel a little hurt that she patronizes cable at all. she likes food network but it is the stupidest thing ever. if you are interested in cutting the cord, i like many others use xbox media center or xbmc. here is a little video that i made showing my system.

If google wants my help i will donate my labor to this noble cause. Its as noble as any. Its time a big company fights back against its rivals and wins. You have my sword, and you have my bow, and my Axe!
my parents were spending about 100 bucks a month but i fixed that for them. now they use my system. i use xbmc on the old xbox. softmod those things and they work well for streaming content up to the quality bluray rips (less than full bluray quality but better than dvd rips by a bit). anything above that and it cant handle it. the old xbox only supports up to 1080i but i dont know what most of my files are. That is just my front end. im waiting for my raspberry pi to come in august and then im planning on using that for xbmc as it is so small and it has hdmi output. you could use the western digital tv live or anything else that will do local network media streaming over samba or similar file sharing protocol. boxee is another option that works. i use a server as my central point for all my front ends to stream from. at the moment im using xp as my server os because thats how i know how to do it right now. it just sits under my tv without a keyboard, mouse, or monitor so it is unobtrusive and the fan is so quiet you wouldnt even know it was there. ive got all my content split into movies tv and music so its organized and i can rdp into that box from anywhere because i have the ports opened up on my router. i have my content on one 2tb drive and i have an exact copy in my desktop should the server copy go bad. it is effective and i dont have any bills other than internet access.
this is so funny because even as they talk about taking down bit torrent the above post is already thinking of ways that this can be stopped. its great. when a community wants something done it will be done. might i add that i still use ftp to get files where i want them to go. i share content around on friends networks with ftp and while its slower and as i understand not so secure anymore. i imagine something like this could be secured with trusted users.

Here Here! Im tired of people thinking that wireless is the only way to do anything. It is convenient in some ways but less convenient in others.

http://labs.bittorrent.com/experiments/sync.html bittorrent sync is a really cool tool that i use for this. its free and the more machines in the group to sync the faster it will sync.
