It's not entirely like that. An example: the mathematics that are used today for optimal control problems where established in the late 18th century. It's just that computers able to handle them weren't really available until the end of the 20th century. At least the reasonably-sized ones...
Even so, they have to present some kind of progress in order to get paid, don't they?
Just have to lock yourself in the bomb shelter with your MREs and wait for the zombies to rot. Then come-out and rebuild society.

For a while I used EcoVPS (www.ecovps.com) without any problems. Their specs are a little low, though (Guaranteed RAM: 512MB, Disk Space: 5GB, Data Transfer: 100GB)... Also I didn't setup anything too fancy, so these were more than enough for me...

Although it should be mentioned that, despite that, some titles are cheaper on Steam than on retail stores...
