I hate to be a dick about it, but this sounds eerily like what has been going on with the Finance community. Not reporting correctly. This just sounds like deceit plain and simple. People in the financial world are going to jail for not reporting correctly. Granted, your situation may not be as serious, but it certainly could be and not being honest and up front isn't going to help things one bit when a poorly built house of cards comes tumbling down. It's a bitter pill to swallow, but in the long run, honesty really is the best policy. A lot of cliches? yeah, but they are cliches for a reason.

I say this to say: NASA does not do a good job marketing itself. I bet a lot of "average" Americans say/think the same thing. I REALLY wish NASA would get a professional marketing team from Madison Avenue to get Americans more excited about space. Big Question: What do we have to gain from it? And I'm talking about monetary gain. Where will we be paid back from out investment in so many tax dollars? Like I said, I'm all for it, but I think NASA (and the government) need to do a better job of selling it.

This is to be expected. Dreaded certainly, but expected. It's also a learning experience for all of those involved. True to the ethics of Open Source and Free Software, this kind of thing is made public so all can benefit in the long run. Bravo to the Debian team for being... open.

  19. IT and Plumbing or Information and Water on Does IT Matter? · · Score: 1

I like analogies. If you don't, quit reading.

To me, IT is like plumbing. Before we had plumbing, it sucked pretty badly to have to walk to the well to get fresh water. And just how fresh was it? No purification systems. It could have bacteria in it and you might die from drinking it. Then, along comes plumbing and gets the water to our house. Purification systems came about and gave us clean(er) water to drink and use for cooking, making tea, showering (some of us anyway) and such. Life was good. I bet when plumbing first came out, plumbers were thought of as the shit. They received high salaries (some still do) and all the young guys just out of college wanted to be a plumber because it was cool and getting water to people was cool (okay, maybe not all of the young guys and okay, maybe it wasn't that cool. This is an analogy after all.)

So, along comes IT (Information Technology) and computers. Before IT, we had to go to the library to get books and do research (like going to the well, this kinda sucked) we also had to do all of our math on paper with pencils. This kind of sucked too. It also limited the scale of our calculations. We also had to resort to Playboys for porn. Kind of embarassing to go to the store and buy a Playboy from the girl at the register. We also had to pay for our music and movies (really, we still should, but most of us don't.)

Well, you get the picture. IT is like plumbing and information is like water. Granted, water is more essential to life. But information can be as well. It has made us incredibly more productive and efficient. Sure, it has created new problems and issues, but it has helped us to solve a lot of problems and issues as well.

I guess the point I'm trying to make is that IT does matter as plumbing matters. As time goes on we'll begin taking IT for granted (as we do clean drinking water and nice warm showers.) But, IT DOES matter and IMHO, anyone who says different is, well, just not that smart. That is all I have to say about that. Thanks for reading.

  21. Well, here we go again. on Microsoft to Launch MSN Music Service in 2004 · · Score: 5, Insightful

Could this be Netscape vs. Internet Explorer all over again?

Once again, Microsoft is late to the game. Apple started it this time with iTunes (where it was Netscape with the web browser). Initially, Bill and MS were reluctant to get on the bandwagon with the Internet. Then, it started to leave without them. They smell money and take off after it. "Well, we'll just give our browser away for free and because it's installed by default, why would anyone pay for Netscape?" Of course many "average" users didn't blink and eye used IE and Netscape died.

Are we going to have the online music wars now? MS, again late to the party says, "Well, we've got Media player already installed by default and it's free. Now all we have to do is undercut everyone else on the prices of singles and albums and we'll own the market. If anyone matches our prices, heck, we've got so much money in the bank, we'll just give the music away. We'll also slip some DRM in and make our compression technology proprietary. Customers will love us for free music and the RIAA will love us for DRM."

Nahhh, Microsoft is definitely not a monopoly.
