It takes time for the investments to bear fruit. Scientific institutions can take generations to build.
Don't be too quick to judge the effectiveness of the money spent. Singapore, for example, is a relatively young nation that started its gifted education programme in 1984 and established A*STAR (Agency for Science, Technology and Research) in 1991.
When you point your middle finger to a general in uniform, you are pointing the middle finger to the uniform.
When you point your middle finger to a general in civilian attire... that's another question.
You only salute a general in uniform, because you're saluting the uniform and office. You don't salute a general in civilian (you're not required to).
I'm not from America, but I think this would apply to armies throughout the world.
This.
I'm a teenager, trying to make decisions that will affect my career in the future. I went for an science/engineering career talk recently.
When I realised that the speakers were all either managers or waiting to "move up" into management (or professors, but there weren't a lot of them), it was kind of... demoralising that the "pinnacle" of a science job seems to be management.
The message they're giving us is: getting a science related job is merely a step to getting a management job. Don't focus so much on the science parts.
Way to interest us into getting jobs in science.

Harm != offence and vice versa.
