I haven't read through all the replys, forgive me if this has been said before.
This isn't something all to amazing and fancy to me. These are commercially available programs. Set up a Quad Xeon box and load one of these babys up (SMP Capable) and you've got one of the worlds strongest computer chess machines in the entire world. Needless to say for some people that is super computer chess. It isn't though if you consider that there are similar, even those of lesser strength, computer chess engines battling these same processes and winning. Crafty comes to mine, created by Dr. Hyatt. It's a wonderful piece of coding, well commented even, quite possibly the strongest engine that is open source.
What seperates Deep Blue from these is that Deep blue was created for it's own specific machine, Code came second, muscle came first. These most likely started as a college programming project to get him an A that spawned into something else, or they might not. Either way Deep blue stands apart from these. I still do miss Deep blue and wish something would come around to take it's place as computer super champion.
I also look forward to the completion of Dr. Hyatt's Beowulf Crafty. Yes, a Beowulf capable computer chess engine, how's that for frightening? I'm scared by it already. Look long enough and you can find all the information about crafty, as I can't recall any URL's for you.
Try it with some chick.. it'll work wonders. Trust me.

that would work for a time. though you'd have to keep it fed fairly well or you would get the jitters. Quake framerates would have sudden spikes and such. Though eventually he'd build an amunity to caffeine and you'd half to either cut him off and let him loose the imunity or up the dosage. I would prefer the first method my self, because after he's clean and past the jitters you could give him your Bawls and he would have a massive boost in OC capabilities.
Apperently from what I read a long while back, this could be false but it makes for entertaining reading, is that lawsuit was the spawning of one of apples primary sounds.
"Sosume" wich of course if broken down becomes "So Su Me" Wich they did... all because apples shipped with a microphone.

"With minimalistic (nothing on the scale required) [coding ability] I haven't attempted to make one either"
This isn't a good way to do this, but I've looked into it and I think it's possible but have yet to find the time or the money to attempt it.
What I am thinking of is using a wearable device. You wont get super high quality but as you say nothing to fancy is required. The hard part comes from the fact that wearables are still mostly a hobbiest project. The hardware is easily obtainable and getting linux installed and running on a wearable has also been achieved. After that point the challenge is no longer hardware but software. I've looked a bit for mp3 recorders and found none. With minimalistic (nothing on the scale required) I haven't attempted to make one either. But from people I have discussed with it is seemingly possible. Buffer the sound and encode it. Depending on the hardware you could have 100 to 933Mhz at your disposal. My old AMD K6-550 with a heavy load was encoding at a bit over twice the speed so I further believe it can be done.
Along with extended mp3 recording ability (assuming it can be done) he could also set it up for in the field data entry. Of course you still come to the usual problems Wearable hobbyists run into, a display, and battery power.
(Wearable of course is a "wearable computer" compact, light, low power, for those not in the know)
It aint no hand held 64mb AA operated device, but it could be done I say.
I don't care about money,
or paytree (buncha bs),
or what ever you people wanna whine about..
I'm giddy over a new stats box with people motivated to get it fixed!
No more weeklong web access downtimes due to stat runs. Maybe we'll get lucky enough for more then 24 hour updating?
Hey, we may even overload while we're at it! RC5, OGR-24, OGR-25, Let's add a few more projects to the cpu cycles.
OT: I'd like to see something Chess based, I still wonder how many legal chess moves there are, including promotions.
I'll settle for one of these things that's been degraded. Skip the Touch screen, I prefer mice and keyboards. And while we're at it why don't you just give me the case and display? I'll stuff my own motherboard in it.
I think a lot of the/'ers are crying "Specs?! Specs?!" My self included. 1ghz? 15 patents? Big fuckin deal.
Like HAL, the Omniputer will, its backers claim, have an instinct to protect itself. 'If user errors start, and files get deleted, it will start to repair itself, just as cells repair themselves,' said De Saram. However, it is thought unlikely that it will try to kill its owner.
Am I the only one disturbed by the fact they used the word "unlikely" in that last sentance? Perhaps Clark will go out with a bang, taking out several thousand computer users with him who purchased this computer..
"Clark passes, HAL breaks 9000 Kills"
I'm curious as to what sort of mainstream american publicity this will get, if any. Will it show up on ZDTV with thousands of computer geeks staring in awe?
How small these sort of things are getting.. Soon enough a mad man with deep enough pockets will be able to buy a terabyte of HD space with a small Beowolf cluster and some highspeed networking and run intense pr0n operations out of his bedroom on a 5U rack.
When they come down in price, then I'll be happy. quick and easy hardware for power users is always nice.
So if we see your case in the cool case gallery, and it's just plain, does that mean we cut you down? No we smile nicely and pat you on the head and send you off to do some more. We're less critical about it. If it's cool to it's creator then it is cool. If it's not cool to someone other then the creator of that case, to bad, it's cool to him.
You're not alone my friend. I do admit there are some times when even the silliest idea gets a convent of people who find it incredible. There are other times when I find some ideas breath taking, and more often then not I wonder why I didn't think of it first.
But It surprises me to see this kind of reaction from some people, especially geek people like you or I. I woke up today, checked my email, and found an email saying we had been slashdotted. So cool I thought, I load up slashdot and find a link to us. Even cooler yet. But some of these comments are discusting.
Case modding is a hobby as much as ship building, baseball card collecting, and so forth. To some of us There's nothing more fun then finishing up a neon, flicking the on switch and watching the neon glow gently through the lexan window.
But I suppose some coverage is better then no coverage. My thanks to Slashdot for the huge mass of traffic (I think it's a thanks), and my hopes that Case Modding will become less of a secret geek project over all.
I do work for VirtualHideout, I'm dargon. I manage the VH RC5 team. Toss me an email if you don't believe, dargon@virtualhideout.net
