"One idea could be that you're controlling a family, telling them when to go to the kitchen and when to go to the bedroom, and with this mechanism you have gamers all over the world 'playing the show."
And suddenly you have a family jerking around like marionettes with a pair of five-year-olds fighting over the strings.
Getting rid of the existing TLD's in favor of a unique n character TLD is, IMHO, a great idea. However, It Won't Happen. Here's why.
lets say I have a tld ".firewheels". I happen to know there's at least one organization out there with the same name. Do we roshambo for it? Or do we (more likely) engage in a protracted legal battle? Without a governing body (oh, say, the ICANN), organizations with the same name have to be highly respectful of one another. I suspect we all know the odds of that.
Here's another thing: Without a governing body, you open up the system to large ISPs and other organizations refusing to carry the TLDs of competitors. This also has the potential of locking out little guys.
...and they've just gotten around to fixing it. I wonder what tipped them off first -- did a PHP see the site, did someone call them, or did one of the web guys wander in, lesurely get a cup of coffee, bring up/., and have an OH-@#$% moment?
Does prior art on one part of a patent invalidate the whole thing? 'Cos I seem to remember the Early Macs having a click'n'hold function for context menus (not to mention the whole double-click thing).
So the free flow of information is now a PRIVELEGE and not a right? This is what you seem to be saying, with the statement:
a Cyber-ADA needs to be passed by Congress to define how (and whether) the handicapped shall access cyberspace.
This implies that you hold the belief that all rights must be granted by legal decree. When did the blind stop being human, with basic human rights? And where does it stop? Next you'll be saying that those with physical handicaps -- like myself -- need to be explicitly granted the right to use the internet because we sometimeshave difficulty using input devices. Or perhaps those with mental problems should be legally granted those rights because they have difficulties understanding the words.
Since it's Sony, you'll only be able to view your pictures on one computer, and to share them, you'd have to take a film photo of the screen, resulting in a 'less perfect' analog copy.
Evolution is one of the finest email applications I have used, bar none. Unfortunately, as a Windows admin, it sometimes becomes difficult to monitor my email while I'm working (and I absolutely REFUSE to use outlook).
Are there any plans to produce a win32 Evolution build?
Where in "sign their stories as posted on the web" does it say anything about encryption? Encryption algorithms are useful for more things than protecting grandma's hash brownie recipie.
It's these kind of uneducated comments that allow our freedoms to be inched away from us.

Too bad it's really hard to get the prison warden to install your dish for you.
So someone's lawyers decided that each ring is worth a value of exactly 7.5 cents. Who comes up with these figures?
IANAL, but I remember hearing a radio interview with a parody artist recently (Some dude from Hayseed Dixie, an ACDC tribute band). He told the interviewer that because he was singing the song more or less faithfully, he owed the original artists USD$0.075 for every dollar in revenue gained from the sale of the albums. In this case, it was USD$0.75 for a USD$10.00 sale.
My interpretation of this is that unless you're charging for the ringtones, you don't owe the RIAA squat.
On a related note, what about cover bands that play parties, clubs, etc... Are they required to pay for the performace? Is it the responsibilty of the club or of the band?
Personally I don't care if there's a god or not: I want clones. I wanna grow spare hearts in a vat. I wanna have a brainless clone in a tube in case I blow out my liver drinking whiskey. And as soon as we get really good with the genetic engineering, I want my own half height clone to mow my lawn.
Can we moderate slashdot stories? (-2, Troll) sounds good to me.
You know, I used to be a die-hard MS fan; I'm still a MS Admin. But bit by bit MS is burning me out. Embrace and extend on the server side, and take away my freedom to choose on the client side.
I used to use WinNT on my (primary) home machine. When Win2K was released, I switched. Now I run RH6.2 (Kernel 2.4.3) most of the time, except when I want to play a game that isn't released for Linux yet.
Granted, it's not because MS products don't fit my needs. Rather, I use Linux because it's a better ethical choice for me. I know I'll be able to do what I want with it for a long time to come.
Anyone looking for a burnt-out MS Admin with Linux Experience?
The Sun Enterprise 1000 can hold 4 Sbus or 2 PCI cards.
Let's see... I can drop a soundcard and a TV-Out card in this and make it one mother of a multimedia server! It'd even go nice in my house as a heater.

NO.

Nice idea, though.

I swore off MS-based products during the XPSP2 debacle -- cold turkey.
I don't care that it's open sourced. It's microsoft. I'll be moving my databases to pgsql just as soon as it's technically feasible.

This isn't new - my family's been making natural gas from turkey every november for generations.

I guess that's it, then... Linux truly is dead Joe Average's home computer. Truly a scary thought.
Because they want strong encryption banned.

Neat! Now what about LinuxPPC? Alpha? Sparc?
This isn't cross-platform, it's multi-OS.

No, of course you don't -- Unless you were wanting a face-to-face meeting. But what good would the system be if it couldn't locate someone?
