We've learned that Venus has over 50,000 active volcanos, and is mostly covered with lava. The earth was once like this, but has recovered. Venus did not recover because it's gravity was not strong enough to keep its water molecues from leaving its atmosphere.
from wikipedia: McCoy was born in 2227. [2] The son of David, [4]:257-258 he attended the University of Mississippi [2] and is a divorcé. [5] In 2266, McCoy was posted as chief medical officer of the USS Enterprise under Captain James T. Kirk who calls him "Bones". [2] McCoy and Kirk are good friends, even "brotherly". [4]:146 The passionate, sometimes cantankerous McCoy frequently argues with Kirk's other confidant, science officer Spock, [1] and occasionally is bigoted toward Spock's Vulcan heritage. [6] McCoy often plays the role of Kirk's conscience, offering a counterpoint to Spock's logic. [1] McCoy is suspicious of technology, [7] especially the transporter; [2] as a physician, he prefers less intrusive treatment and believes in the body's innate recuperative powers. [1]
A sawbones is a slang term used to describe a physician, and more specifically a surgeon, especially one who would have served in battle. The term is often tied to the Civil War, but in fact predates it. Dickens uses it to refer to a doctor in the 1837 novel Pickwick Papers which suggests common use of the expression at least 20 years prior to usage during the American Civil War. http://m.wisegeek.org/what-is-a-sawbones.htm
Yeah, but the key fact that you'll get from a News Corp source which isn't in the others is that Obama is an elitist communist Nigerian Muslim.
Apologies to you, AC. I realized the point of your comment too late, had already replied, was half asleep when I did. (insert sheepish looking emoticon here)
If you rely on one source for your news, you're not always going to get the whole truth. I've lived in the N.Y.C. area most of my 50+ years, and used to read 3 different newspapers a day. When a story was covered by all three, most of the time I could learn a key fact from one source that the other two wouldn't have, allowing me to piece together what might have really happened. Getting your news from one source gets you a biased viewpoint, you need really do need multiple sources before you're able to form an educated opinion,
Well, of course. If the U.S. were to call off its war on drugs, the extreme profit motive would cease. Remember how the U.S. Col. Oliver North funded several mini-wars by allowing the crack epidemic of the 1980's, while the president and his wife told kids to ''Just say no to drugs'? Drugs are illegal because it is more profitable that way.
According to this article quoting Orson Welles, his mythical character Charles Foster Kane was not based on Hearst (perhaps to avoid a lawsuit?). Still, the movie is a fine study of what drives some types into becoming obssessed with power and control.
Orson Welles made a fantastic movie about a newspaper mogul who controlled what news got fed to the masses. Younger readers might want to settle down for a couple of hours and watch "Citizen Kane" ( http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Citizen_Kane ). Rupert Murdoch is our modern equivilant to William Randolph Hearst, a manipulative, controlling type who, like others of his ilk, learned too late in his life about 'control'. Control of informaion, and of the people in his life.
Like other historical tyrants (Hitler, Mussolini, etc., throughout history), he never was satisfied with what he had, & never understood that the more you conquer and try to control others, that it is all just temporary. The problem becomes maintaining control of thier created 'empire'. They self-destruct, losing that control. Power is fleeting. And most all historical figures who sought it ultimately lost it all, and died unhappily. It's only those that realize that not ruling with an iron fist is the key to true success.
On the topic of North Korea I HIGHLY recommend Nothing to Envy by Barbara Demick. This book will show you just how horrible things are over there. It's a very well written book.
IANAn Apple user, but isn't there a way to remove drm's from Apple music, by burning the tracks to disc then copying them back from the disc?
I stopped paying for music after cd's. Just rebuilt my mp3 collection in less than 2 months by borrowing/ripping library CDs. After having backed up over 9000 tracks to flashdrive, I'm done for awhile.:-)
I used to buy it on occasion, in those pre-internet days, because it was the only place then to learn about the game secrets and cheat codes. With those, I could really get my moneys worth and stretch those games out.
Donating blood is a very safe (and selfless) act to do. There are stories of men and women who've donated every month, and even more often. Just don't go and do extreme anything for a day or so.
Yeah, but once you outlaw something there's a need for, you create an illegal market for it, like alcohol prohibition. Growing organs from stem cells isn't viable yet, if it ever will be. Jeez, we've got college educated doctors involved in the organ black market over the last decade. Lots of old rich people who can't face dying naturally will pay, no questions asked, if it buys them a little more time. I don't see any easy solution here, not with easy big money to lure the young and ignorant with.
Hey, it is not a joke for some. When I was a kid, 'Coma' was just a scary movie, a work of fiction about a creepy organ harvesting hospital. Today, bodies are found missing body parts in different parts of the world, some people truly are 'ghouls'. Human life is cheap to some if profit$ involved. Some scary shit.
What the fuck is it with/. that attracts so many pessimistic know-it-alls who have to piss on everything on the day of its launch?
. Good question. I've had experience with people like that, it's easier for people to tear an idea (or person) down, it's harder, or not in line with their wanrs, to build an idea or person up. Human nature being what it is, you get those types in life.
Have they published final specs for the controller? Last I checked it lacked start/select buttons and featured an unnecessary awkward button labeling and it wasn't clear how the trigger would be setup. Has any of that changed?

The character's nickname, "Bones", is a play on sawbones, an epithet for physicians, [8] in particular, those qualified as surgeons. [9] http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Leonard_McCoy#section_1

I thank you for that tip, grateful not to have been born there. Googled and found this Guardian article, http://m.guardiannews.com/books/2010/apr/03/nothing-envy-korea-barbara-demick

Okay. Please explain, in detail, why a console game system is not a computer.
Any device that 'computes' numbers is a computer. Your brain is a computer, as is the ancient wooden bead abacus.

How high?
Yes, but who's retaliating at us, North Korea or the Slashdot editors?

Worst apostrophe EVER.
It was meant to be 'shinys' . Critique accepted though.
Man, once you hit that "submit" button on /. , there's no going back. :-(
Does the iPad come with a smartcover? Might be worth a kidney or two then... :-O

The correct pronunciation is "whee-ya", turns out. I thought it rhymed with "boo-ya". http://www.ouya.tv/

The bare bones site has a video and a pic of the controller.
