A lot of people who look old enough to be called adult really still think like children. You made a good observation there, imo.

He's not a hero, he's not rational, he acts pretty deranged. What he really is is another good example to young people why they should not allow themselves to get involved with opiate consumption of any sort, heroin or it's legal prescription pill form. If you're hooked on it now seek help and treatment, before you end up like this poor tortured soul. Heroin addiction is not cool, and it causes you to make some real bad life decisions. Not exactly correct. There are situations where you can legally shoot somebody trying to steal your car beyond a carjacking. Most police departments are not going to be too concerned about your average citizen shooting someone trying to steal their car and few juries would convict someone protecting their property. Make it nighttime, with the car parked in your driveway and it's even better...

I believe that just because you CAN do something doesn't always mean you should. Taking human life over a hunk of metal and plastic may be legal where you are at, it would be morally f-ed up to do. If the thief is coming at you (or someone) in order to harm you, that'd be different. But to kill a human being over a theft of property? In many ways you might regret your choice right after, or fifty years after that free-wheeling decision of yours. I've heard somewhere that if you really want to 'piss off' God, murder another one of his creations. And what you posted doing would be murder when you could've just walked away and let the police handle it. A good, moral man knows that there are times to stand and fight like a man, and there are times to walk away like one, no harm, no foul on your part.

A great book, read it as a kid. From wikipedia... "The novel included some notable early descriptions of proto-science and fictional technology, among them Bester's portrayal of psionics, [12] including the phenomenon of "jaunting", named after the scientist (Jaunte) who discovered it. Jaunting is the instantaneous teleportation of one's body (and anything one is wearing or carrying). One is able to move up to a thousand miles by just thinking. This suddenly-revealed and near-universal ability totally disrupts the economic balance between the Inner Planets (Venus, Earth, Mars, and the Moon) and the Outer Satellites (various moons of Jupiter, Saturn, and Neptune), eventually leading to a war between the two. Jaunting has other effects on the social fabric of the novel's world, and these are examined in true science-fictional fashion. Women of the upper classes are locked away in jaunte-proof rooms "for their protection", the treatment of criminals of necessity goes back to the Victorian "separate system", and freaks and monsters abound." http://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Stars_My_Destination#section_3
