I'm not trying to be rude, but isn't analyzing logs - especially 12 Gigs - a bit slow? I've been logging all my network traffic onto DAT tapes (~ 600 Megs a week, I've got a slow internet connection) and every time I try to print out any useful information I end up wasting a whole afternoon. I imagine someone running a sequencial search on such a massive database...
BTW, here in Brazil, law enforcement keeps it's "ear" on cracker IRC channels, since impatient crackers (kiddie scripters) love to brag. Also a good network admin would have at least one snort or NFR running, now a days it should be mandatory.
I've got a snort with intrusion detection rules running on 2 machines and a third running tcpdump to the aforementioned DAT.
I work my internal network heavily for about three hours a day - mostly backups and/home duplication and I've never had a problem with the EtherExpress cards. BTW, I've had the same cards on the same machines for almost a year and a half and - so far - not a single network problem. Heavily == constant 95% network usage.
It may be just my machines - my boss promissed to sue the company that sold us the machines if we had any downtime... (just kidding...)
Nanananinano! The funnier episodes are all long - that way CowboyNeal, Hemos, CmdrTaco and co. ramble on longer. I listen to the show early morning, just after my morning dose of Caffine + Deathmatch. I usually laugh so loud that my work buddies come over and ask if everything's alright.
First of all - I'm a non-american and I get most of the references - the US of A is a huge media whore / bully so in Brazil we manage to stay up to date with american culture.
Hey GiS is REALLY fun, if I want facts or serious commentary I read some traditional newspaper. BTW, Slashdot and GiS are one of my favorite passtimes, they're fun, contain a few neat-o facts and they talk about Jennifer Aniston's nipples.
... alright, I got that out of my system - now to the complaint...
Why isn't this article on the main page? Come on, I like Jamie's and Cliff's posts but some of them aren't getting the attention they deserve. No, I don't filter out their articles but they still don't show up.
There are 75 computers on my LAN and 5 of us at Tech Support distributed as such: 1 - Boss (support and DB work / punching bag) 1 - Network administrator ( Me / wise ass / Slashdot geek) 1 - Computer graphics dude (scapegoat) 1 - DB manager (other punching bag) 1 - Hardware Support (the guy that talks like Barney Rubble)
BTW, we do each other's work - but I don't let them even close to my server farm.
Anywho - my boss and I (the 2 veterans of the staff) decided on fitting each person to the area in which they are the best at, that way when we have a major problem in any of those areas, that guy becomes the chief until the problem is solved. This is a cool way to work because it gives everyone a chance to do what they are best at and gives them time (when there are no emergencies) to read about new stuff.
BTW, once there's nothing really critical to resolve we just sit back and do tipical tech support stuff ("No, your computer isn't going to kill your dog" like stuff).
Summing up, 75 PCs to us 5 is about good - we could go for a few more people but 5 is the ideal size, we have about 1 to 2 hours a day of Unreal Tournament Deathmatchs, Quake 3 Arena Deathmatchs, P0rn Surfing, MP3 ripping and other work related activities...:)

An MP3 Update
·
· Score: 1
I'm checking my account right now and only 53 of my 69 albums are blocked - Dick Dale, Cinderella, Pearl Jam and Beastie Boys and a few others are still unlocked though.
Well, I guess I gotta go back to ripping my CDs while MP3.COM manages to find a way around this damn copyright - you don't own your music, you license it from us - nonsense.
I risk being another "me too" here, but weren't the stillsuits "sleek black"? Aren't the fremen supposed to be a little on the lean side, after all they don't have any "water fat"....:)
'kay, I'm being a little critical about this - but hey - I'm a fan, I don't have a life, let me nitpick!!:)
I'm about halfway through Chapterhouse: Dune and, as the other five books - IT'S GREAT. Now all I gotta do is dig up some Lord of The Rings and the Hobbit...
He doesn't need to fill in for anyone, have him as a guest or something. BTW, since we're talking about guests and stuff - I really liked it when Roblimo was over!
Hey, that's no fair, I've got all the 24 (now 25) episodes on my napster list too! I've also got those special features that come out once in a while!!!
I know, this is redundant, but I CAN HARDLY BELIEVE THIS! Richard Garriot is my game-god together with Sid Meyer - I've played the Ultima series since I started using a computer (my first game was the venerable yet awsome Rogue). Man, I hope he starts his own company so he doesn't have give up his ultra-mega-super massive virtual world ideas, RPGs after the Ultima series were never the same!
I'm not the flaming kind so I won't flame, I'll give my US$ 0.02...
Companies that I do not even work for have offered to train me to be a MCSE. I'm not kidding! As of now, I have not sold my soul to MS and I don't intend to - no little certificate will make me a better professional - EVER. I've built more networks from scratch than anyone I know (I don't know almost all of you, so slashdotters are not included in my guess-timate) running Novell, NT and Linux and as of yet I haven't met any MCSE that's been able to do what I can with a pair of pliers and a 5 year old laptop running the OS of his choice.
I know my trade VERY well and I'm proud of it - no certification - except a vanity one (like a Linux Certification) will make me feel better.
Sorry for my rant - I'm proud of being self-educated in the ways-of-networking.
Sorry, they were slashdotted up to some 5 minutes ago...:)
It was kind of cool for some AC to post the whole "open letter" here on Slashdot, shame's it's so long but was worth my time (I needed a good laugh)...
Damn this is a good question! Please moderate this guy's question up! In a recent article in a Brazilian internet magazine they make the same question and the traditionalists (a.k.a. offended journalist) said that news media must be independent and that they should only inform what they believe is news worthy... in other words, some small group of lame-a** idiots decide on what we should hear, read and opionate on. PLEASE moderate tao.ca's question up!

TOTALY AWSOME DUDE! Yes, I'm another leftover from the 80s...
I'm gonna love this, my favorite RPG on the silver screen. Hey, maybe they'll make a movie out of Dragonlance, it'll be awsome to see Sturm get killed!
As "Blair Witch" will only be showing here in Brazil in December (probably opening the week before Christmas, don't ask me while, this things just happen) I'd like to have a link or a nice summary (WITH spoilers). I'm your basic poop-in-pants when it comes to good horror movies yet I LOVE THEM.
Anyway, is there a single soul out there that can give me a good CORRECT spoiler of the movie or link me up to one?

Hey, isn't Dogbert the patron saint of something? I have blown-up of that cartoon around here somewhere!!
