one thing i'd like to know is why you need to upgrade your kernel just to run as a non-root user with bind9

yes I mean ACPI (Advanced Controlable Power Interface).. it also supports IRQ routing.. Windows 98 only has partial ACPI support to give you the soft-shutdown, Windows 2000 it fully supports it. I had lots of problems at first because of Abit's lack of releasing a decent BIOS from the start, Windows 2000 even flagged it as a buggy ACPI BIOS (among many others) so it refuses todo an ACPI install meaning IRQ's as used like normal, but as soon as Abit came out with with a decent BIOS you just turn on ACPI in the BIOS and reinstall Windows 2000 (it has to setup the registry differently, if you just turn it on in BIOS and install ACPI Computer in the Windows 2000 device manager it wont boot).. you can verify this information on www.bp6.com (Abit BP6), Microsoft als has some information on their site -somewhere-.

To verify your Windows 2000 install is using ACPI and IRQ routing you can goto device manager and select the "Computer" tree. If it says MPS Multiprocessor or Uniprocessor then it is not, if it says ACPI Multiprocessor or Uniprocessor then it is.

That's why most new motherboards support ACPI, though the operating system (such as Windows 2000) needs to support it aswell. My video card is on IRQ 16, SCSI card on 17, Soundcard and 2 UDMA/66 controllers on 18, USB hub and netcard on 19.. the only "real" IRQ being used is IRQ 9 for all those.. and a few others like mouse and floppy on other real IRQs.. there is still plenty of free real IRQs for devices that don't support ACPI and my system is already packed up with everything i need.

I don't know if Linux fully supports ACPI as I only run it on the servers I remotely admin so maybe someone else can answer this one?

Then there's the problem Emusic will be using a bot to do all this - at which point, they get barred from the service for ToS violations!

I agree that they should get barred, as I did (one of Napigator authors, barred us for publishing Napster server stats) however with the recent court cases I think Napster will strike a deal with them to show the courts good faith.

Finally, in order to calculate an MD5 hash, you need to download the whole file. EMusic plan to download every single file on Napster, just to check for files they claim rights to?? This, I must see!

the napster client already sends your MD5 info into the servers on login, it was used for auto resuming which has been disabled now..and it only MD5's the first 300k so if you have an incomplete file that's 350k and the full file is 5Mb the MD5's will match as the first 300k will be identical and we can safely assume it's the same file and resume regardless of filename.

I've been running win2k all year and never once has end tasking IE made Explorer restart, each IE is run in its own process you can end task one and it wont affect every other IE running (including progs that use its engine).

What exactly makes you trust that when Explorer is restarted it's not working 100% again whereas gnome bar is.. do you have any proof or is this just a 'feeling' you get? I spend all day coding in win2k, a few weeks ago I wrote a SHOUTcast streamer and I was dumping the WAV samples out and then not freeing them when they were done playing all day during development, leaking 88k per second and the OS was still rock solid. I do this almost every day coding various apps, a few with the IE engine, testing during different stages of development and I seriously can't remember the last time I've had an OS crash.. I can sadly only speak for win2k though, I use win98 inside VMware now as it's alot easier on the reboots heh.
