Not to hard to imagine, I see a system that's a combination of Fortran 66, cobol, and C all sort of working together over the years. All parts have had numerous patches and changes applied over the years until no one understands it anymore with each interation making the system more fragile. Now they are lucky if they have the source code for the current build. Each time the industry is making money and IT is flush a project is started, to examine all the code in the system and refactor and rewrite to modern standards, and each time the project gets just past the planning phase the economy takes a dump and the team get laid off. Now that the problem has had an economic impact on the company, the PHB is going to send it off to India, to some kids 6 months out of college who is going to have to google the internet for the meaning of a GOTO statement, used in the million lines of code that is older than he is.
Would be a shame if they just plain sued the wrong people, and the plaintif and his attornies showed up in court with broken thumbs and knee caps. Sooner or later some corp is going to take the "evil corp" stereotype seriously and decide to make a hobby our of make some greedy smuck's life a living hell. I'm not realy advocating violence here, but we're talking big money here and sooner or later somebody is going to get stupid, then somebody is going to get hurt.
Why do you assume it's noise? A long expossure of the sky at night picks up a lot of stars to dimm to be visable to the naked eye, this exposure was about 2 or 3 hours judging from the star trails. the star trails are caused by the Earth's rotation.
If blocking unauthorized port 25 connections stopped spam by 50%, that means the total received would go down 20%; What's wrong with that. I sure that there are a few that would object but not many. Most clueless windows owners would be mortified that their computers were being used to defraud others. A little out-reach education on how to avoid and detect being owned wouldn't be a bad idea either.
I'm not sure about cats but humans have very distingisable personality traits from in utero to day one, which I find hard to attribute to anything else than genetics. The personality disclaimer is probably as much to protect genetic saving and clone from being sued over the owner's version of the original's personality as it is to protect them if they produce a geneticly damaged product. One little oppsie durring mitosis is all it takes to product a defective psyco-pet.
This has happened more often than we are emotionaly comfortable with. I remember reading about a set of twins seperated at birth for adoption, as adults they had the same racial prejudices, the same occupation, frequently voted for the same people and even the physical mannerisms even after gowing up in different environments. Personaly I suspect that twins raised seperately end up more alike than twins raised together would.
What happens to the legal status of GPL'ed projects when some company manages to retroactively claim a patent on some double click feature Well that's the problem, while IANAL, my understanding is public disclosure doesn't preclude obtaining a patent. I might for example create a new UI widget that everybody thinks is the slickest thing since goose grease. Now I insert my widget to replace the dreaded GTK file selection widget in the GIMP as GPL'd code. Just as everybody has elevated my widget to can't live without status; I trot down to the USPTO and apply for patent protection, and even can be asshole enough to use the GIMP source and binaries as a demonstration prototype. After I get the patent, everybody can distribute the source code to to make my widget, but nobody can actualy use my widget. While this example is a bit contrived, I remember something like this happeneing at the W3C not too long ago.
The related departments have closed 1,278 illegal web sites and 114 sites promoting gambling, superstitious activities and cult propaganda according to the information provided by the informers I'd guess that one of the 114 sites that promoted gambling, superstition and cult activities was legal, but closed any ways.
Extra-button usage on the mouse is really kind of a religious thing, I'd say it Mac-Windows-X11 in order of increasing usage of additional mouse buttons. The wife was taking a computer application class this semester, a Word/Excell/Access class and it took her about 3 weeks to get comfortable with the RMB.
Of all the people that have said basicaly GIMP UI sucks, your the first I've seen that has been able to say why rationaly.
One of the reasons that basic painting seems like an after thought in GIMP, and probably photoshop is because they are; both are for digital image manipulation rather than basic image creation. Using either for a paint program is like taking a semi-truck to get your groceries; sure you can do it, but its not realy the intended purpose. .
All software downloads are free, and each comes with a development license that allows you to use full versions of the products only while developing and prototyping your applications. You can buy Oracle products with full-use licenses at any time from the online Oracle Store or from your Oracle sales representative.
you can start the feeding frenzy at their software catalog.
bestbuy.com lists Adobe Photoshop CS - Windows for $649.99. I don't see to many real people shelling out that kind of money for software, and retailers are not stupid, if something will not sell, you shit-can it and use the shelf space for something that will.
Considering that the basic keybindings are the same for GIMP as for Photoshop, anyone who complains that it took hours to learn GIMP, have not only not learned GIMP, but haven't learned photoshop either. I would find it quite amuseing to watch you be the tar out of them after switching programs.
I've used IE forever and never got any spyware in my life. Sure you haven't, or more likely you haven't found any spyware. Soon, your going to sound like the guy that has been pissing fire for a month how he got the clap from a toilet seat.
FF has much less control over your OS as IE does, so any harm... will still be minimal Yes I agree We've quit using MSEI as the primary browser, shortly after Balmer testified that EI was too tightly integrated with windows to remove. I don't let the kids play with guns either.
I can just see all the nerds have competions to see who can get their cell phones to report the highest velocities. I can see every thing rocket motor powered roller skates in the parking lot to spud-guns across the football field.
KDE and Gnome are too bloated, we need a simpler standard.
KDE and to a slightly lesser extent Gnome are far more than a UI-window manager-tk; they are application frameworks. I love my KDE, and there are a lot people who love their Gnome, but most of us will admit there are time we use a less resource intensive WM while doing certain tasks; on my slower machine.mpg's play a lot better, and programs compile faster when I'm using WindowMaker rather than KDE. I like having the choise.
One of the reasons for the depenency hell isn't that the dependencies are hard to resolve, it's that the libs are used by multiple programs, and changing them willy-nilly can cause serious problems and instabilities.
It doesn't always work, but it can do phenomenal things for customer loyalty if done right. That would mean that companies would have to weed out the preditory business personalities, and actualy start thinking about a longer term that next quarter's report or the current bonus period. Followed to it's logical conclussion, they'd have to actualy service their current customers and quite salivating over emerging markets like India and China.
The key word is distribution, the uploading is much more serious because your distributing. If the file is illegal, then distributing implies a conspiricy with the people recieving the illegal files.
When you only posses an illegal copy, you can whine and whimpper about fair-use, or you didn't understand or some bullshit and probably get some sympathy from a jury or a judge; but as a distributer your going to sound like some kind of son-of-Satan, drug smugler and get the book thrown at you.
I think the word Bank is critical here, and I mean a real bank, where you can develope a relationship with a human person, face to face on both a personal and business level. A real Banker is going to be more interested in keeping an on-going mutuly beneficial relationship; not meeting a commision quota this month while he looks for an other job.
Rebuild natural massive carbon sinks like plankton, sea algae, and rainforests That's still eye-wash, the bio-mass is going to go where? Most likely it will decay into Methane, and CO2 inside of 50 years and have to be re-removed; my 21 billion tons of CO2 assumes that the carbon would not be recycled back into the atmosphere and would get us back to 1850 levels in 30-50 years. A world population of 6.4 people means everybody would have to take 3 tons of carbon dioxide out of the atmosphere and sequester it someplace permantly every year for 30 years.
North America even tho has significantly increased forest coverage, can't compete against slash-and -burn agriculture in Africa and South America. In Sub-Sahara Aferica almost every scrap of burnable wood has been burnt for fuel. throwing your daily newspaper into the landfill wouldn't be enough!

Thanks, now when somebody tries to get me to comb-over I can refuse and cite that its all ready patented and I don't have a liciense.

You must not cut and paste much; it drives me nuts to use an app that looks that much like it does in Linux and doesn't support X-11 cut and paste.

If you have a ripped dvd, the original is covered by DMCA because it encrypted, a technical anti-copying provision, not normal copyright laws.
