Different than ASF.the quality is night and day, literally. ASF tends to be dark, and tear/drop frames/get blurry during fast movement......this new format doesn't have any of those problems, and looks better than mpeg at half the size....decodes fine on my p2-400 when i'm multitasking, so it's not a processor instensive as software DVD encoding

Seriously. Anyone with the smallest understanding of how a computer works can change the default port in the prog, and viola....no more problem.

In the case of things like napster, this is a good thing(TM) People who can get around the block anyways know better than to open up gigs and gigs of mp3's to other people on fast connections and expect them to play fair. Blocking the port protects the lusers who think that hitting the x in the corner shuts napster down; seriously, I've had to talk to about 300 people this year about bandwidth issues, and 280 of them have been people who didn't even know other people were getting files off of napster thru their comp..........

  5. Re:Windows NT in the public safety field on 911 Calls Linux · · Score: 2

I'm working in a fire/medical dispatch NT environment. It's very easy to say "port everything," but it's not practical. Too many systems are working together on the same OS for it to be stable with a completely different box in the mix. In this case, it's ProQA (medical aid), the radio systems, the phone systems, TriTech VisiCAD, the old CAD system as a backup, along with normal workstation duties like logging, 4th dimension, etc. The system runs stable, and data transfer between apps and systems runs smoothly.

What people seem to be forgetting, also, is that the people operating the systems are not trained rats. They are completely capable of handling every incident without the aid of any computers at all. therefore, if a computer crashes, dispatch doesn't come to a screeching halt. Until a compltely stable, robust SUITE of applications is delveloped natively for linux, it will not be a practical solution for many aapplications. I'd love to see Linux be a player in this arena, but it needs to earn its reputation from experience, not solely from the enthusiastic cheerleading of the linux community.

not a great solution, but why not use a redirector like bigfoot? Then you get mail everywhere it needs to be......

Let me preface this by saying I've never been homeschooled. However, my mother has been a homeschool teacher/administrator almost since I was born, and the majority of students were not there because they had been expelled/suspended, etc, but because of the exact reasons you speak of.
I was friends with a lot of those students; they were "geeks" just as I am. They are also well adjusted, because the homeschool programs here require social interaction in situations in and out of the instructional environment. For many people, it is a very valid choice, and, for the people that try to succeed, a good experience.
It's like anything else; some people look at not having to attend "school" as an excuse to withdraw from any society. That's one of the reasons we had big computer labs on campus, and lots of extra classes and opportunities. The kids who took adavantage of these opportunities weren't forced to deal with the trials of high school I was (though I was lucky; the group of kids at the top of the class banded together, so we didn't catch too much crap).

Kind of funny, left handed people seem to gravitate to computers. One of my contracts was implementing a new dispatch database; about ten guys were sitting around talking, and we realized we were all left handed. Is this a trend? /. poll anyone?

  17. mp3 vs cd audio format on IBM and Mp3 · · Score: 1

Hmmm....mp3's, in general, seem to smear really high frequency stuff like cymbal hits, and low bass can be a little bit weak. Overall though, if recorded at 112 or above, there's not too much difference (especially in a car or portable system, where you have lots of ambient noise anyways). I reencode mp3's to cd-rs for my car, and most people who are not complete audiophiles can't tell the difference.

Stands to reason that this is also why notebook drives can hold up to more than an average 3.5 or 5.25 disk.
