I've heard an interview with Bob Woodward where specifically said that he told his editor who his source was and that he thinks that the editor should know who a reporter's source is. It is a check and balance that leads to an internal accountability. Something which avoids the problems we've seen in the press lately of reporters claiming anonymous source when its really a completely fictitious sources. Doesn't the complete anonymity being talked about here lead more easily toward that kind of abuse?
If money were no object my dream is for a completely computerized traffic system. I get in my car tell it where I'm going and it tell the central traffic scheduler which inserts me into the traffic system. Not only can it pick the best route, but it should adjust my speed and that of all other traffic at all the intersections and we don't ever have to stop. Cars can be packed in more tightly because everything moves at the same speed and there won't be anyone slamming on the breaks because traffic unexpectedly cloged. The capicty of the current roads could probably be doubled. Then I'd sit in the back of my car with a good book or a tv and barely notice that I had a commute.
would it be so hard to grab the definitive list of area-code/extensions that are exclusively used for cellular phones and just apply that to their dial-out lists?
That's not so easy as a lot of people forward their home phone to their cell phones. I do always take in telling the telemarketer who thought they were calling home that they have called me on my cell phone and that it's costing me money to talk to them. Some guy actually told me to send him a bill.

I read, "a novel application of statistical theory" as "a novel of statistical theory" - and I was still interested!
