Huh, at least they respected your rights (sort of). I was once pulled over in Santa Cruz, CA, the cop asked if he could search my car, I said no, and he proceeded to do it anyways. He found nothing. As he was about to leave I asked why he had searched my car if I had said no, he said they were only required to ask, the answer didn't matter. Man I wish I had that on tape.
Exactly. We need to look at the total energy and resources required for any form of transportation solution. Compressed air may be inefficient in tems of energy usage, but is extremely effiecient in terms of resources required. Air is the only "free" energy storage medium. Should be able to make cheap, air-powered NEV's for a grand or two in mass production. I'm not saying compressed air vehicles are the complete solution, but they are a part of the solution.
Ed you ARE an ignorant fuckwit spreading dis-information. You are either deliberately trolling or truly ignorant of the law. It is expressly legal to ride a bicycle on all public roads in the USA, with the exception of some freeways and highways and bridges. This is fact. It is also legal to walk and ride horses as well. Are you honestly suggesting that people should be denied the right to freely move about their country if they don't have a car? They couldn't go to school, work, the hospital, etc...
But please don't let the facts or truth sway your fantasy reality.
First off, I said "at least" 1000 cycle. I forget the exact rating but it's like 1000 full cycles and the batteries are still over 90% rated capacity. So you can run them longer than that.
2nd. Those are full dis/charge cycles, most of the time you'll probably need less. On top of all that they are waaay better than any other high-energy-density battery avilable. You're lucky to get 500 cycles out of Li-Po batteries.
3rd. These are brand spankin' new cells and technology. They already kick the snot out of pretty much all previous batteries and they can only improve.
I think an EV using these cells could reasonably expect a 5 year service life and maybe as much as 10 years depending on useage.
These A123 cells are already in production and use. They are standard in the DeWalt 36V industrial battery pack. Most of the model airplane guys find it cheaper to ebay these and pull 'em apart for the cells than to buy them individually from A123.
They do perform extremely well, with about 2/3 the energy density of Li-Po, but with the dis/charge abilities of a good Ni-Cd. They are also supposed to have a very good service life, over 1000 complete charge cycles. At about 1/2 the price of Li-Po's I'm looking at picking some up for an upcoming EV project.
By the way, you really hosed the story submission. You got Fred's age wrong, his apeed and distance covered wrong, and you failed to point the readers to our website where the results and photos will be posted. Perhaps next time you should be a little more carefull and thorough as I can not re-submit the story and as such you cost us and the sport quite a bit of potential coverage.
Lighter and faster? The Easy Racers Gold Rush weighs approx 25 lbs with carbon fork and seat and is comparable in speed to a diamond frame road bike. Put a front fairing and a "body sock" on it and it is faster than any other production bike on the market, period.
Fast Freddy just destroyed the competition at a local velodrome on one of our "body sock" equipped bikes. He clocked almost 39 mph in the 200 meters compared to 34 mph for the next closest competitor riding a low racer.
Every top team in the world was invited to this event. The amount of time/effort to actually get to a track, anywhere in the world, is pretty trivial compared to the amount of time/effort spent designing and building one of these bikes in the first place. So if you build the best bike you can, you should take it to the fastest track you can. What's not fair about that?
If you read the hpva rules you'll see there are very specific rules regarding wind and weather. There will always be a track that is fastest. There will always be an element of luck regarding the weather. All other forms of motor vehicle records are typically set at one location, be it Reno, Bonneville or wherever and they do not "adjust" the numbers based upon the weather. That's racing.
I am the "friend" that works for Easy Racers. Wassup Drinkypoo! We just got back a couple hours ago and I see this is already posted on Slashdot, cool! I have already put up a couple photos. I will add some more photos/videos and stories over the next couple days, after I sleep for about 20 hours.
About 5 years ago I was pulled over on suspicion of speeding. However the sheriff had not tailed me sufficiently or radar gunned me so he had no proof. He instead called the California Highway Patrol to do a sobriety test on me. I blew a 0.0%. After they left the sheriff asked if he could search my car. I said "No", he then proceeded to search my car and of course found nothing. After he was done I asked if he was really allowed to search my car after I said "No" and he said the law only requires that they ask and it didn't actually matter what my response was. Times like that I wish I had a little video camera installed in my car. I've had 3-4 incidents of similar abuse by the law, of course, since I'm actually a law-abiding citizen and not the criminal they always think I am, I've never been busted for anything.
Why not integrate a GPS reciever into the phone? You can be GPS recievers for under $30 retail. This could automatically forward your location to your VOIP provider AND 911 services.
A bit more money, but you'll still save in the long run.

No-where in that article (that I saw) does it state it is capable of truly "autonomous" flight. It has on-board gyros for stability. I got the impression it would fly waypoints as directed by the wireless bluetooth network.

A: Screw the customer in every possible way.

And that "3D shape" is protected by a design patent. That is what "design patents" do, they protect physical 3d designs.
Patents are quite literally the DRM for physical objects.
