  1. Why to document on Convincing Management of Network Security Issues? · · Score: 2, Insightful

Try to get written acknowledgement of your report; merely "to cover yourself".

The bosses bosses may not be keen to give this and wonder why you are so insistent on covering yourself.

They may then take another look for fear that they end up uncovered when the dirt starts to fly.

  2. Not time travel on New Rocket Fuel: A Pinch of Salt · · Score: 2, Informative

    I don't think so, read the nature article;

It says that half the compound was made two years ago, and that to make the other half:

Metal compounds might offer a route to synthesizing N5-, suggest Laura Gagliardi of the University of Bologna in Italy and Pekka Pyykko of the University of Helsinki in Finland.

They think that the N5- ring could be made, along with a ring of seven nitrogen atoms (N73-), in a compound with a metal atom, such as titanium or zirconium, sandwiched between the rings3. Carbon-ring compounds like this already exist; ferrocene, for example, is an iron atom sandwiched between two five-atom carbon rings.

So we're partway there and with recent developments in chemical synthesis without use of heavy engineering plants we have good hope of getting a decent rocket fuel!

  7. Beware Sound Cards on A/V Data Collection Using Linux? · · Score: 1

Beware sounds cards, 8KHz is often not quite 8KHz and it might matter; esp if you wish to correlate recordings made simulaneously from two cards, or from a sound card to a video card.

You may find that 30 mins of recordings from each card are not the same length.

You may prefer to take continuous small blocks of samples and timestamp them yourself, but I don't really know if this would help.

For a real sound card expect to pay over a hundred dollars; but you may find it cheaper to add a trimmer capacitor to the crystal oscillator circuit on the sound card and calibrate yourself.

I didn't even get a chance to explain about the stupid license, they just took it and gave a refund.

Once availability or inconvenience reaches a threshold people change behaviour.

If pay per view and STUPID content control takes over, people will just play more golf, more football or karting, or take to amateur dramatics, or evening coding in pascal.

  24. Then do it yourself on Sunset Clauses in Software · · Score: 1

Whinging is a fine sport and can be enjoyed in groups or when alone.

It can bring about much change and can be well worthwhile.

The ultimate solution of course is to do it yourself if you don't like the way other people are doing it.

If you can't you are left to consider that these companies are perhaps merely excercising their market value to extract as much as they can for their efforts. You might also think that the various competitors didn't start up at the same time yet are following the same revenue generation model.

This model exists I believe due to the short-term gullability of purchasers and the cunning of marketers.

If you are just paying for a new user interface, then more fool you for paying. Of course you are not aware of changes in the underlying byte-stream scanning engine, why should you be, but what efforts have you made to find out? Or did you hope the marketing arm would [raise the price and] tell you all about these [proprietary and hard to understand to the layman] changes when pricing gimmicks sell better?

Remember how scanners had to change to be able to detect all variants of polymorphic viruses, consider Nortons trick of emulating the first few instructions of each program to see if they matched the pattern of dodgyness. Testing the viability of these options costs a lot, so expect to pay again and again even if the research did not pay off.

Unless you suspect a cartel in operation, the wide variety of companies practicing such schemes surely indicates there is not that much fleecing going on.

As for licensing terms, yes I find them rather bogus but it is the best attempt at defence from a lawsuit crazy country when the software industry was weak and growing.

And the answer has always been if you don't like the terms, do it yourself.

I happily am able to but have better things to do (family) and so don't, but get more enjoyment.
