Actually I disagree that the first item in your list should be classified in Y. The ability to walk should never be considered a "privilege". Otherwise, the next thing we know, there will be people out to confiscate our limbs for not having a walking license registered with the state or federal authorities. Hm...reminds me of a Monty Python sketch....

  5. Much ado about Rand Paul on Rand Paul Has a Quick Fix For TSA: Pull the Plug · · Score: 1

Let me shed some light on this guy. Regardless of what you think of his politics on a national level, he is a terrible senator for KY. He goes on these crazy crusades without spending any time on....oh....I don't know....his electorate? We have been having some financial problems in the state lately, but instead of addressing those and helping his fellow Kentuckians, he is out campaigning for his daddy. Anyway, if you guys love him so much (talking to you, Texas and California), you can have him. We don't need another Tea Bagger who supports Sarah Palin's "ideals".

Also, for you tin foil hatters, he was a member of the same college secret society as George W. Bush and Kenneth Star. Apparently they were all good buddies back in Texas. He's a Texan all the way through, and carpet-bagged here to be a U.S. Senator.

Remove the TSA? Um, thanks Mr. Paul, but what about our state debt???

  11. Interesting! on Gold Nanoparticles Help Red Blood Cells Deliver Drugs · · Score: 1

This is really cool! My family and I just learned about this from a researcher at the Cincinnati Museum a week ago. They were holding their "Nano Days" event, and this was one of the booths. It turns out that a solution containing gold nano particles in a small enough amount is actually red. She explained the same concepts used in the article, and how gold nano particles can be used to target cancer cells, bind to them, and release a dose of cancel-killing drugs (similar to current chemotherapy) with a laser and/or heat dose. Our 10-year old daughter thought it was quite awesome.

  12. Transcripts on On Slashdot Video, We Hear You Loud and Clear · · Score: 4, Insightful

Someone else already (albeit rudely) suggested the idea of allowing for excluding SlashdotTV items from the main page. I am all for new content and features, but be sure to make them opt-in. That way, everyone can have what they want.

That said, I will repeat a previous suggestion when SlashdotTV launched. Please include full transcripts of all videos when posted either on tv.slashdot.org or on the main page as a story. Not everyone can listen to the audio, because of technical issues or hearing issues. Or like me, we are at work and cannot stop to listen to a video in an office environment.

Other than that, keep up the great job, Slashdot! And thanks for being free!

  21. My Opinion on Ladies and Gentlemen, Welcome to SlashdotTV! (Video) · · Score: 4, Insightful

I think that having a new tv.slashdot.org is completely fine and even a little cool. However, my preference is that these videos should only be posted to that site, and not to "regular" Slashdot. Or at least provide a standard tag or category which we can filter out if we choose. We know where to go if we want to watch videos - the TV icon at the top (nice job on that btw, it was immediately obvious to me what that new icon signified even before reading this article). Otherwise, I'm just looking for text blurbs and snarky/humorous user comments, sometimes with optional videos behind the summary's links. Maybe we can just get the story summary text, with a link below the summary that says "Check out the video over on Slashdot TV!"?

Oh, transcripts for all videos on the TV site would be helpful for many as well.

I completely agree. The rampant elitism in academia is another contributing factor to how broken modern science is, I believe. I used to find it hilarious back in grad school how professors would never want anything to do with their students. Should a student produce something meaningful, however, you should see the scramble of the faculty to ride their coattails. It seems you can only be successful in science these days if you produce something that will make the faculty important and/or famous and/or wealthy.
