    i don't know about smoke from cigarettes, but when my neighbor decides to cook, i sure get a whiff. i don't know what kind of spices they use, but my house stinks for days afterwards. maybe apartments should have "spicey cooking" and "non-spicy cooking" sections.

    I would think that there's some sort of insurance policy the district would have to payout for any lost lawsuits, especially in this age of "i slipped cause i didn't read the sign so now i'm gonna sue".

    i'd advise against this for the simple fact that if bob is the only one who knows how to do x then what happens on the day he decides to call in sick? quit? get hit by a bus? specializing in one area is ok as long as everyone has some knowledge, but compartmentalizing it may be a bad idea.

    yeah, what'd they call it? the smallifyer or something like that? our school library had a bunch of them (though not all), and i read all i could. guess that's why the thought of VR goggles and gloves etc. didn't seem new to me when they came out, i'd already read about them in a DD book..

    minimum wage? i've never heard of a telemarketer earning that little. sure, you have to keep up your sales to keep your $10 an hour earnings, but i was pretty sure they don't earn only min. wage...

    all jets fly with a system that sends out information on what type of plane it is, and other identifying info. the radars are tuned to those signals and effectivly see the sytstem that's sending the signal and not the airplane itself.

    i know that a soldier dressed as a civilian behind enemy lines (according to the geneva convetion IIRC) is considered a spy and can be summarily executed without trial, so what would this mean for a plane that is labeled "Air America" that flies over enemy territory to shoot down missles as they're being launched?

    i think that by the time a missle has gone through development, testing, and final deployment there will have been some sort of intelligence as to the physical characteristics. plus, 1) i don't think there are any pigeons capable of flight over mach1 and 2) any planes on our side i'm sure will be advised to stay away. besides, it says in the article that the computer will be given specific rules of engagement before being launched. i would hope that would include things like identification of what types of missles they'd be going after.

    Did you know that there are no viruses for Linux at all (except one that was made as an academic exercise just to show it could be done)?

    i think the reasons that there aren't any viruses for linix is because 1) linux is still not as widespread as Microsoft. no reason to make a virus that will attack a minority of users when you can make one that will attack the majority; 2) most linux users (i'm assuming, could be wrong) will be the type who keep up to date on viruses and the like and therefore would know not to open attachments if they aren't sure what it is.

    well, the government (specifically the military) does lots of things it won't allow/force companies to do. i believe courts have ruled before that the military can pretty much do whatever they want with their people, but a company shouldn't be able to get away with that. i would be worried however since this guy probably has one of those clauses in his contract that says he or the company can terminate employment at any time and for any reason. in which case he's probably SOL.

    manslaughter charge wouldn't stick once it was established that your crushed corpse was carrying a device it was using to intentionally distract me.

    how is an airhorn (which would barely penetrate the sound-proofer newer cars) different from those old bells bikes used to use or the horns other cars have? are you going to try and run down a bigrig cause he honked at you? 'cause i believe any hand-held airhorn i could get wouldn't pack a punch compared to the ones on those 18-wheelers.

    i wouldn't be using it to distract you, i'd be using it to announce my presence.

    Many a UNIX admin are donning a job instead of college, but don't realize that they will be the first to go once a recession comes around. How do you feel about this possibility?

    why do you assume that a non-college grad would be the first to go? I would hope that the merits of what a person has done in their current job would have more weight than what grades a person got a few years ago.

    i find that one problem with the HOWTO's written by different people is that they're written by different people. every author has a different way to explain something. some of their ways benefit some people, other ways benefit other people. i have not yet been able to go from one HOWTO to another without having to stop for a second to understand the particular quirks of this new writer.

    i don't know, i think that getting their phone cut off would cause them to look at the phone, put it back and say "hello" a few times, then try and start dialing again, causing even more distraction from what the SHOULD be doing..

    maybe a device that sends out a prerecorded message on a frequency that all cell phones in the immediate vicinity could pick up on, like static or something. only this would say something like "hey you idiot, there's a bicylist coming up behind you, watch where you're going!". dunno, just a thought.

    maybe you could just get an airhorn and honk at them as you get closer..
