offshore banking has been around for awhile. i remember that in The Firm (book not the movie) the Cayman Islands were used as the bank to launder money. but there's also firms that specialize in anonymity. They can forward mail, voicemail, email for you and set up anonymous accounts in different countries that have less restrictive laws about banking. I'd love to get an offshore account (even comes with a Visa bank card), but the $10,000 initial deposit requirement is a little steep.
i've used a cassette adapter in my car for awhile now on my laptop, and i really didn't notice that much sound loss. of course i don't have air conditioning so anytime i got over 30mph i couldn't hear much of anything w/o turning it up.
i've heard of this company and the software they develop. they did one for domestic abuse cases and it looks like it works great. they can pretty accurately predict from a questionaire how likely a spouse is to get beaten. they've been able to use it with battered women to convince them to leave their husband/boyfriend/other by saying, "according to the statistics, if you say he has [insert act] before then he would have no remorse to [insert even worse act], and a x% chance of killing you soon." The only questions is whether or not the schools will test everyone or just those with "violent tendencies", who usually are labelled as such because they're non-confirmists. I hope the schoolds will do the right thing, but i'm sure there will be lots of cases where decent kids will be tested while some violent jock/prep/whatever gets away with anything because he conforms....
found more details here and here. It's rechargable, claims 6-8 hours of battery life. Also says there will be a car power adapter for it available...i know what I want for xmas...
Why not let him tinker away and learn how to reinstall a system when he messes it up? It's what I did with my mom...
you could probably get away with that with some people, but there are others who really only want to get on, check email, and get off. if it gets more complicated than that, they don't want any part of it.
The tasteless stuff costs so much less than the good stuff, that people buy it regardless of its quality,
cheap solution for beer drinkers. buy a six pack of an expensive favorite brew and a 40oz. of any malt liquor. drink from the expensive stuff until you are noticably drunk (varies between user). then finish up with the ML. i know that by the third or fourth beer i can't tell the difference anymore, so it saves me having to buy another six-pack again...
I've found Outlook Express that comes with IE5.0 is a really nice client. I can have it pull mail from several different POP3 accounts. When replying it has the ability to let you choose what email you're sending from (unlike in Netscape which makes you change it, close, restart) on the fly. You can also set it up so that any email aliases you have are also included in the From list, but can set it so they aren't checked for mail. I like it, even if it is M$...
I know it won't work under different OS's, but if you have one station that always runs win9x/NT, you can use it on there.
I was having a lot of pain along the top of my hands which i figured was caused by how i typed. i got one of those gel-filled wrist pads for my keyboard and mouse, and they have helped tremendously. I only get pain now when i'm away from this pc and don't have the pads anymore. it also helps that i've started making myself notice how i type and making a concerted effort to keep my hands in a good position.
when my country/state/city decides as a whole that i am not legally allowed to protect my then they can pass a law telling me i can't anymore. until then, the law (in my area anyway) states that i can use "deadly force" to protect my personal property, or to defend myself if i feel my life is threatened. that means that a guy pointing a gun at me is NOT a legal excuse for me to kill him, and neither is a guy i see robbing a bank. but if the guy breaks into my house or car and runs away with my property i can shoot to kill, and if he points the gun in a threatening manner and i feel my life is in immediate danger, i can kill him (or try, i'm not a good shot).
even if we got rid of the 2nd ammendment (which i would strongly oppose), how would that stop the criminals? from the time I entered middle school i could get a gun, even though I wasn't old enough. getting rid of the right to have a gun won't mean the criminials will give them up. it won't even get law-abiding people to give them up. Gun laws really only protect those of us from criminals who get caught with the guns, that's why there's a such thing as armed robbery vs. strong-arm robbery.
we use smarter forms of transport (like walking - shocker - cycling - double shocker - and public transit) to a much greater extent
even more off topic, but where i live (dallas), to take public transit to work would require: 1 hour ride on bus to downtown, 15-30 minute wait for the next connecting bus, 1 hour ride on bus to station close to where i work. from there it's about a 30 minute walk to my building or I can wait another 15-20 minutes to catch another bus and get dropped off in front of my office. Even riding in the HOV lane on the freeway with my sister and mom(both of whom work near me) It still takes over an hour to get to work. I could move closer, but i can't afford the rent. So, I think a device that'll hold enough songs that i won't have to listen to the same stuff twice in one day would be fine.
Stephen King's "The Lawnmower Man" was made out of a two-page short story. Of course it sucked too (the movie, not the story. the story was just plain bizarre)
(gee how original) i remember waiting with the rest of the seniors at the beginning of our last semester in high school for our class picture. me and a friend of mine who were "troublemakers" (i had been called to the office all of one time during my 3 years at this school, for smoking. outside. after school was out.) were pulled out by the vice-principal. we'd done nothing wrong, but because of our attitude and how we were dressed, she asked us our names (nope, she knew we were troublemakers, but not what our names were) and proceeded to look us up in her book to see if we indeed had enough credits to be able to graduate that year. imagine her surprise when she saw all the AP/Honor classes we were enroled in. her non-existent apology was great, i'm glad i'm out of school, and even though it's been four years already, i still harbor anger and resentment to the people who had nothing better to do than to check up on me for no reason other than for who i hung around with.
