I agree that Sony would win with the most users on its platform. However, Sony and M$ have different target markets so they M$ tactics don't really translate into good strategy for $ony. Sony doesn't have a B2B product, it has a B2C product. M$ makes its money by selling to businesses and OEMs. Sometimes even end users pay for licenses, but that's usually only when they've bought it from the OEM. However, the second that Sony puts out an emulator on the market, it's going to turn instant warez and they're never going to see _any_ money for it. Their market is gamers. If gamers steal the emulator, they're going to have a much harder time suing for it than M$ does suing companies and OEMs.

So if you're still arguing that Sony will make money from licensing the games, well, that may be true. But when gamers can download the 'patch' that corresponds to the PS2 mod chip, how many people are going to pay $50 for a game that they can burn for $2? Can anyone say NAPlaySTationER?

I've started working on this, too. I've found a sweet, sweet remote at this ghetto Yahoo store. They have a strange policy of not accepting debit cards, but accepting credit cards. In any case, I ended up having to resubmit the order three times over the course of the day, and got order number 1342, 1343, and 1344... :) It's the best remote that I could find (the ONLY one with a number pad on it). It even has a directional pad and buttons for mousing!

Antec KS780 for the case. It's a black desktop ATX case.

At this point I'm a little wary of setting this all up on Linux. It seems like it would only take a few hours to do it on Win9X since all of the software and drivers are already written. But eventually I want to write a sort of 'front-end' that has a main menu of functions like DVD, MP3, CD audio, Web browsing, TiVo, and of course, my collection of emulated games. I'd be glad to contribute to your project and to help in any way that I can so this thing can become a reality. I don't want to have to run this all on Windows.

  8. onboard ethernet in the US on Wireless LAN Onboard Passenger Aircraft · · Score: 1
There are currently two companies working on the solution to the onboard ethernet problem in the US. One of them is Boeing, however, and they don't plan to do it for cheap.

Boeing's solution relies on a satellite to mediate the connection between plane and ground. The other solution is being worked on by some startup company (the name escapes me) and is far less elegant (but cheaper). It queues up requests (SMTP, HTTP, etc) and sends and receives a huge chunk of data to and from receivers on the ground at regular intervals. The onboard hardware basically acts as a proxy.

Both solutions are wired to the seat, which is safer than the wireless solution, but still reasonably insecure. I think that the cheaper solution still rings in at $17 and hour.

Personally, I don't think that we need Internet access on commercial flights, except possibly for 5+ hour flights (international). I don't know anyone who can't live without e-mail for an hour or two.
