  1. Re:Reliability varies - what about Intel-Macs? on Apple Laptop Reliability Survey · · Score: 1

You were lucky with your TiBook. My TiBook has had a bunch of problems. I had the extended warranty though and it paid off. I had the keyboard replaced (died), screen (plastic hinges broke, way too tight, no easy way to adjust), casing (paint peeling). These are typical problems many other owners experienced (hinges and paint certainly, google for it). Apple service is awesome but the TiBook in whole honesty isn't the best reliability-wise. The new Aluminum PowerBooks (2003 and onwards) are way better.

That scumbag is trying to extort money out of other companies for a patent that should never have been granted (using computer to route based on lowest cost route, I would have never thought of that!). The fact that the attempted extortion is legal and government sanctioned right now doesn't make it nice or moral.

I just got a Pioneer 110D from a sneaky local store. It died 20 days later and as it turns out the store will only warranty their stuff for 2 weeks (nasty, that's posted nowhere and it's not on the receipt). Now, I'm trying to get Pioneer to fix it but they are saying that they have none in stock and are urging it me to deal with the store. The store in the mean time reversed their stance and is now offering to exchange the drive for $20 ("shipping" to the distributor). Anyway, a whole lot of fun. Last Pioneer I buy...

Nonsense. Of course they should be blamed for bad support. They were being abandoned for a different reason in mid nineties. People who buy their products pay more but expect more so why wouldn't that apply to their support? I am about to dump my bank because I'm sick of dealing with the half-wits they hire for phone support. That all said, I had my PowerBook repaired by Apple last year and it was done well and within a reasonable time frame.

I hear you. I am a supporter of open source despite my wanting stable API. It's not necessarily about helping closed source drivers at all. Having a stable API helps open source as much as closed source drivers. Who wants to debug a million drivers every time APIs change? Linux will never (unfortunately) be adopted on desktop until there are stable APIs (not just kernel) and manufacturers are allowed to link in binary drivers. Why is it such a big deal if it helps adoption of open source? Theoretically, manufacturers with open source drivers should do better in the long run because their driver will be higher quality and debugged by more users. OSDL insists on politicizing this issue and instead of Linux, OS X is prospering.

  8. Amen! on Should Linux Have a Binary Kernel Driver Layer? · · Score: 4, Insightful

I have been waiting for that for a long time. The lack of a stable interface is hampering adoption of Linux. Not all of the manufacturers are willing to open source drivers or for that matter to continuously change them as the APIs change. This is very welcome but unfortunately, I think they'll fail. There is just too much politics surrounding Linux these days.

Semi-tractor engines? LOL. Check this 225 hp (330 lb torque) turbo diesel engine out. They put that engine in a chassis as small as the Audi A4 and in that configuration it does 0-62 mph in 7.7 secs. Diesels make a lot of sense for hybrids but Japanese were never big on diesel engines. Personally, if I were buying a car today I'd get a Jetta TDi (1.9 liter) because it has is priced decently, has good fuel economy in town, absolutely awesome economy on the highway (unmatched by Prius/Insight) and is a proper car IMO.
