  1. There is only one speed: c on Mathematicians Extend Einstein's Special Relativity Beyond Speed of Light · · Score: 2, Interesting

'The theory we've come up with is simply for velocities greater than the speed of light.' In effect, the singularity at the speed of light divides the universe into two: a world where everything moves slower than the speed of light, and a world where everything moves faster.

Actually, the exact opposite is the truth: nothing can move faster or slower than c. It is an illusion that objects move slower than c. Motion is discrete and consists of discrete jumps at c interspersed with huge numbers of discrete wait periods. This is true regardless of how smooth you think motion is. Why is c the only possible speed? For two reasons:

Firstly, a time dimension is illogical. Why? Because a time dimension makes motion impossible? Why? Because it is self-referential. This is the reason that Karl Popper compared Einstein to Parmenides and called spacetime, "Einstein's block universe in which nothing happens. Surprise! So in order for an object to move at different speeds, nature would have to calculate temporal intervals, which is impossible.

Second, the universe is necessarily discrete. Why? Because a continuous universe would lead to an infinite regress.

Read Physics: The Problem with Motion for more if you're interested. Believe me, you don't understand motion especially if you think you do. The truth is weirder than fiction.

  4. We need a patent system based on freedom on Google and Apple Spent More On Patents Than R&D Last Year · · Score: 3, Interesting

The current patent system is harmful to society because it tramples on freedom. The purpose of patents is to provide an incentive for innovation and compensate inventors for their hard work. However, it should not infringe on the freedom of others. That would be counter to its purpose. Above all, the system must never serve as a carte blanche for a few to bully all others out of the market. What we need is something like this:

    1. A special independent fund must be set aside to compensate inventors for their inventions and reward innovation.
    2. A retroactive formula must be adopted to calculate the amount of the compensation.
    3. The formula must be adjustable so as to establish the best return for society at large in terms of innovations.
    4. Last but not least, whatever the formula chosen, it must never infringe on the right of the individual to copy and use any invention for whatever purpose.

Inventors should register and publish their findings as soon as they can because their compensation will depend on how much society like and use their ideas. Of course, we still need a Patent bureau and a system to manage claims and the proper registrations of inventions. The system should be as automated as possible.

There will be no impact on science other than the usual atheist psychopaths screaming and yelling that science is being attacked. Computer science and engineering will be 100% unaffected. Normal physics will be 100% unaffected since the Big Bang has no impact on technology whatsoever. Biology will be unaffected because there is no problem with having a design evolution resulting in a hierarchy, i.e., the tree of life. There is no need for a Darwinian tree of life. In fact, the tree of life is a Biblical concept to begin with. So is the brain's tree of knowledge, i.e., hierarchical memory.

The only thing that might affect science is if this congressman's silly ideas on the age of the earth were suddenly held by the majority of educators and scientists. I bet it's less than .001%. In the meantime, the atheist psychopaths can have fun jumping up and down and foaming at the mouth and screaming that America is anti-science. It's fun to watch.

A hundred coelacanth species? So what? Your so-called species are not due to mutations (Darwinian evolution) but to the variety that has always existed within the coelacanth genome. This genomic variety is the reason that one can go from a pair of wolves to chihuahuas without mutations, just breeding. It is a good bet that the coelacanth genome of today is almost identical to the one that existed 400 millions years ago.

The only way a species can't evolve is if it goes extinct.

Aw, come on. That sounds like a religion. The tiny changes in the coelacanth over the hundred of millions of years were not necessary for its survival. It was just minor genetic drift arising from natural breeding and temporary isolation.
