Lot's of those books by Ian M Banks are very good new sci-fi. The whole universe he creates is new and well worth a read....'Consider Phlebas', 'Player of Games' and 'Look to Windward' to name but three.

  2. Re:Spam from an admins view on Exposing Spammers For All They're Worth · · Score: 2, Interesting

Yep, it takes up a load of time sorting out, but spam can also seriously hog system resources. I'm not just talking about routers and switches all over the net....this morning when I checked my Hotmail I had 1741 mails in my junk mail folder. They were all from the same address. If they had spammed my work address instead of my Hotmail I'm sure our poor little mail server would have fallen on it's ass, thus causing our business untold headaches and costing us money.

To anyone who says spammers have the right to do what they do, I would say they should also be held responsible for their actions.

As far as I'm concerned if the company gets into a situation where it can't pay it's employees then the company is screwd.

That makes the employees creditors, just like the leasing companies and all the other creditors. IMHO the employee deserves to be on the top of the list of creditors to be paid but in the business world this is not always the case. The employee is justified in lifting some hardware in lieu(?) of wages that went unpaid, if they felt they weren't going to get paid any other way.

Companies can write off bad debts, people can get evicted from their homes.

"Sunday, Bloody Sunday" was written when U2 was visiting Libya and they saw the US bomb the living hell out of Khadafi.

what??? where'd you hear that? I'd be seriously surprised if the song wasn't written about the British soilders shooting the civil rights marchers in Northern Ireland (known as 'Bloody Sunday'), or it could have been about the time the British soilders opened fire with machine guns on a crowd of people watching a football match in Dublin (a long time ago in fairness) which also became known as 'Bloody Sunday'....given that they are an Irish band and all.

At the same time, how much Death Metal got on the list? I don't recall seeing "South of Heaven" or "Blood for the Blood God" on there.

How much Death Metal get's played on mainstream radio? they didn't need to ban it because it doesn't get played (much).

As for the list itself...I'm just waiting for someone to announce it's a hoax...some of those songs selected would be funny if it wasn't generated by such a sickening turn of events.

The most amazing thing, to me, about this article is the number of people who seem to believe it. If M$ had a system like this in the works you can be damn sure we'd know about it a year before it's launch.

Tetris.....not the best game I've played but by far the most addictive. I thought I was the only person who fell asleep making blocks fit together in my mind but so did all my friends who played the game. I didn't even like the game that much but my brain insisted I play. (Best Game IMHO: Half-Life)

  10. Scary quote on A.I. and the Future · · Score: 1
Here's a kind of scary quote I read recently which is along the same lines....

"If you take all of today's computers and sum them together you will end up with the equivalent intellectual power of 1x1017 flops/sec, which is what one human brain is capable of processing.

Sounds like we humans are in good shape from this perspective, right?

    Wrong.

With computer power increasing exponentially and doubling every 18 months or so, computers are catching up quickly. At the current rate, it will be approximately 2021 when computers will have the equivalent processing power of all humans on this planet combined!"

Artificial Intelligence, Today and Tomorrow Chris Moy

I do kind of have my doubts about how to measure the capacity of the human brain, considering we aren't even too sure how it works

You were told right, Akira the movie is kind of like a long chapter from the comic book series. I read the story in comic book format years ago, I would be much more excited if someone announced they were going to release a reprint of the the comic rather than a DVD of the movie.
Not that the movie was all bad or anything!
