  1. But you just gave me the only one I need ;-) on HDCP Master Key Revealed · · Score: 1

"only excuse you may have is that you're outside the USA and want US content"

Ok, so for me (as I am living in Europe) this excuse is valid to me?
What about those poor USA citizens who desperately want to access Non-USA content??
    I rest my case ;-)

  2. Aegir is ready for production use on How Do You Manage Dev/Test/Production Environments? · · Score: 1

Allthough Aegir is in active development each release is stable enough for production use and migrations between releases are supported. Allthough right now it only supports Drupal the basic infrastructure is in place to support other LAMP applications in the future.

My company runs a virtual lab setup that is build on top of vmlogix labmanager. It handles automated rollouts of test machines but you're still on your own to handle the applications logic.

  4. Seen this in July on Apple Launches Video Podcasting For iTunes · · Score: 1

I was introduced to vodcasting by this feed by 3voor12 in early July this year (press release in english and a dutch article). It's contents is basicly short impresions and interviews (mostly in dutch) with various artists. This is just another of many services by 3voor12, the progressive digital culture department of dutch public broadcaster VPRO. They have loads of free high quality on demand and live streaming content like music radioshows, concerts and much more. They use the services of VODcast.nl (in english) by the company JetStream.
Breakthrough of the year? No, but will any rss spinoff every be? It still one of my personal top feeds.

  6. He's right!! on Build a Multi-Output MP3 Server? · · Score: 1

I use it here too! Go to your local radioshop, buy (parts for) a cheap and ultralowpower FM transmitter, hook it up to the oldest mp3capable box you got et voila: MP3 all over the house and in the surroundings. Just make sure you don't bother your neighbours favourite radioshow. But think about how many radio's you allready got, portable and stationary. If you want hifi in some rooms you can still bother with cables etc but this should take care of the toilet, the music while washing your car or the portable you use in the garden. I use it for my alarmclock, with a corresponding script to wake me up with some good music.

Mod the parent back up please... don't ever loose sight of the analog and simple way...

  8. XS4ALL , possibly one of the best isp's ever... on XS4ALL Wins Anti-Spam Suit · · Score: 5, Informative

These guys have been on the forefront of allmost any ethical debate concerning the Internet and digital freedoms in general. XS4ALL was formed in 1993 by the infamous hackergroup Hacktic(RIP) and was the first dutch ISP to allow access to private persons. Since then they haven't like so many others sold out to profitmaking instincts but kept to their goal of providing high quality, afforable internet access to the masses. Over the years they've suceeded without giving in on netpolitical views like the right to privacy, freedom of speech and freedom of choice.

    - On numerous other occasions they've been in court defending the privacy of their costumers and other basic rights.
    - Threre's no single ad on any of their pages. They're an internet provider, not a advertising agency! Me and many others will gladly pay some more 's for that.
    - They offer analog, isdn(128k), gsm, gprs and adsl access and their service includes free licences for mcafee virusscan and pgp software (all platforms). Do you know any other ISP that does that?
    - There's a whole lot of other goodies you don't find at your average ISP: a telnet/ssh shell, static ip with bSMTP (if you want it), adfree secure webmail, and good public irc, gaming and hosting servers.
    - Their bussiness services are also quite exelent.
    - And they're definitly the only isp in the world that grows marijuana in the workplace!!! (in dutch).

[DISCL: No, I don't own stock or work there, I'm just a ver loyal costumer that has been with them since 1996 both privatly and professionaly.]

  9. Re:Citrix has few features over terminal services on Thin Clients in a Computer Lab Environment? · · Score: 1

both citrix and terminal server have a webinterface in their latest offerings.
The one citrix uses is (of course, why would you pay for it?) a lot better...

  10. best of all worlds... on Thin Clients in a Computer Lab Environment? · · Score: 1

    Concider this:
    - LTSP can indeed cover most email, www staroffice and other comon tasks very well.
    - Some win32 stuff can be supported with Wine.
    - Citrix clients running on LTSP can provide you with most other win32based stuff.
    - Citrix can be used to publish complete desktops but a more cost efficient way is to use it for some applications only. The citrix client will provide a seamless window of the published application running on another server than the one generating you desktop.

So why invest in a 100% citrix solutions if you can use it only when free software doesn't provide a proper solution. This will probably be a very minor part of your current set of supported applications so you won't spend lost of /$ on things free software can provide without terminating support for all win32 stuff people realy (seem to) need.

i'd say: go for a hybrid solutions!

  11. DCC nightmare all over again! but now with video.. on A Closer Look At D-VHS At DVDfile.com · · Score: 1

In the early digital music age Philips launched a low end version of the DAT-tape , the DCC (Digital Compact Cassette). It stored the digitised audio by encoding it (it used some older mpeg codec) and squashing that onto a "normal" tape. This reduced the cost of the player, wich used conventional heads instead of Sony's rotating DAT-head and it could also playback old analog tape... It never made it however. It still required winding tape if you wanted to skip a song so Minidisk and cd-r took its place. This was caused by a lack of adopters other than Philips & Co and a very bad marketing campaign (if any).
When are these guys are gonna see that TAPE IS DOOMED!!! for most common uses anyway... Think microdisks, optical, flash, whatever but please: FORGET ABOUT TAPE!!!

jMax is a graphical programming environment for interactive real-time audio applications. It is based on Max, an ancient realtime enviroment still alive on the Mac. jMax consists of a C(++) realtime server that does all the work on and a graphical Java client where you can easily drag and drop your enviroments a la Logic audio. jMax is not suited for your average harddisk recording project but it's an object oriented enviroment for creating realtime midi/audio/video/whatever artwork. The project's page isn't that informative but do check out the mailinglist, that's where the action is...
Note that the project is still under development fully GPL'ed and has an anonymous CVS-server that will get you the latest sources for your favourite platform (Irix, Linux (x86+PPC) OS-X...

  13. It's St. Nicolas here in Holland on Is There A Santa Claus? · · Score: 1

Back here in Holland (and Belgium) Santa has an alter ego: St. Nicolas (Sinterklaas in dutch). He travels to every rooftop on the 5th of december on a white horse assisted by a crew of Africans. I think he the smarter of the two: - He lives in the south of Spain. Much better living than the Nothtpole don't you think? - He doesn't service the whole world but just a few million dutchspeaking households in Western Europe. Not so much of a logistical nightmare... - He gives families a choice between him and your Santa by coming round at the 5th. This gives Christmas itself more room for it's spritual message that's somewhat disturbed by the greedy tradition of Santa.

  14. Best ISP in Europe: Xs4all.nl on Yahoo Offering Encrypted Email · · Score: 2

    Hi,

My own ISP, XS4ALL in The Netherlands, has some nice security-services:
    - Maximum privacy guaranties. In the pas even some courtorders didn't make xs4all give away userdetails.
    - They've never removed content that would imply a violation to the freedom of speech
    - Encrypted webmail.
    - Free registered versions of Mcafee Antivirus and PGP-suites. (all platforms)
    - static IP, subdomain and bSMTP for a small fee

All for just about 12,- a month. check www.xs4all.nl

(I don't own stock of these guys, nobody does. This ISP doesn't do it just for the cash)
