Well, better than just agreeing with you, I'll make a small correction:
"I've ridden on some high-speed rail lines in Germany, Swizerland & Austria"
There's even no real high-speed rail lines in Switzerland (probably neiter in Austria, but less sure). The normal swiss speed for the InterCity trains is 160 kph to 200 kph (on the standard double-deckers).
and, btw, those train have something nice (unique?) : a children playground !
well, as much as I agree with you, innovation has 2 definition. And it that case, it matches the "introduction of something new" [in microsoft product range]. It's also correctly called "innovation by acquisition".
well, according to the no2id FAQ : "Government ministers have almost unanimously ruled out the option for legal compulsion to carry a card, and indeed clause 15 (3) of the Bill specifically rules out any provision (within the ID cards Bill) for requiring people to carry the card at all times."
Sure, it may not be clear & there are probably enough cases* where it is compulsory, but this is far from being as simple as "not presenting your ID card == crime".
* e.g. police request to prevent crime are really limit.
Er, your ID card is also a document that allow you to go to other countries (altough less than a passport, it's still enough to travel troughout europe).
We're all in lot of databases already. For the UK, I would guess that tax administration, NHS, or driver license administration should already include you ?
The biometric aspect can (and should be) discussed, but I still don't see why the paper ID card is worse than a passport or a driver license regarding privacy ?
It seems like it's just for internal WLAN network, nothing more. Apparently, from the press release, MS has been running Aruba since '99, so it's more a status quo than a ground breaking news.
First, it's not the court, but the european commision (executive).
Second, I still believe that the commisioner in charge is not that stupid. At least, we can give him the benefice of doubt, (s)he already pointed out that those conditions were important.
"The Swico Recycling Guarantee has been in place since 1994. It guarantees that used equipment is taken back comprehensively from the following sectors: informatics; office electronics, consumer electronics, telecommunications; the graphics industry and dental industry.
Used equipment can be handed in free of charge for recycling. The recycling operations are financed by consumers who pay an amount in the form of an advanced recycling fee (ARF) when they purchase new equipment.
In 2003 some 30,000 tonnes of used equipment were professionally recycled. This means more than 75% of the material was returned to the raw materials cycle."
So, if you have stuff no worth ebay, there's free recycling disposal.
only problem is that, as stated on this page, Sweden is not yet part of the USA (or Canada, UK or Ireland).
Indeed
Oh, btw, other than that I agree with your original poster, it's more a play on words to say there's no firewall.
But, according to him, this is required to escape the actual mentality of the almighty firewall.
trough NBAR.
Altough bittorrent is included in the last 12.4 release only, you could add specific (custom or cisco) definitions to previous versions as well.
Umh bittorrent is already recognized by IOS (in fact, most p2p protocols except skype are).
Search cisco.com for NBAR.
Sure, the impact of shutting down your personnal website will be much larger ;)
Well, given that you're in Freiburg, you could also go to Strasbourg too.
;)
(ok, I'm in Bern, could go as well
Nope, if you read the actual directive, it let a lot of freedom to the member state toward fair use related exceptions
didn't heard about any others, but that's cool.
;)
they also tried to put a "mini-market" wagon on selected lines, but they dropped the project after a few years
now if only they'll put some bed on those trains, sometimes, I'd really like being able to take a nap on those trains

well, you forgot the most interesting one
0. somebody crack the DRM and allowed MacOS Xi to run on any commodity hardware
until somebody submit http://www.kibbee.ca/ as phishing website.
"Internet Providers Band Together to Fight Evil" ?
Don't forget that XP N is only half of the plan, the other half is publishing interoperating specification on a non-discrimantory basis.
So, the plan is only half-moronic, and of course, every one who just reads headline is jumping to this part.
ok, for me, (e-)ID cost 10EUR while (biometric) passport is more like 70EUR, while each last 5 years.
;)
Oh, and are you sure your passport is (and will continue) to be ok for travelling to the USA ?
But I agree, it's stupid to put biometric in the ID card, it cost a lot & is just there to fingerprint everyone.

... and the title is even misleading, as they didn't dumped cisco, only stayed with aruba.

funny thing is that both companies are private answers to recycling ordinances.
Some/many/most (?) ountries have industry programs to recycle old electronics equipment.
E.g. swico (CH), Fost+ (BE)
from swico website :
"The Swico Recycling Guarantee has been in place since 1994. It guarantees that used equipment is taken back comprehensively from the following sectors: informatics; office electronics, consumer electronics, telecommunications; the graphics industry and dental industry.

and qt, graphviz, doxygen makes another 20M that sums all at 70M
... and on windows or mac os x ?
and ximian-openoffice is actually about 70M as well.
