    Granted, the inclusion of Flash would make for a much, errm, flashier widgeteering system, but other than that, it sounds like essentially the same thing Konfabulator, Apple, and Microsoft have already shipped.

    On the other hand, if a company is healthy, there is a public outcry to keep them out of town (Walmart), tax them more, or confiscate their revenues for some worthy cause (as Hillary wants to to do to the other US oil companies).

    Those are your examples of healthy companies? Really?

    And you honestly believe that their “health” is what causes people to act the way they do towards them?

    I can only conclude that some spam list generators use dictionary attacks against MTAs, trying different usernames on known good domains until they find some userids where they don't get immediate bounces.

    If that were happening, those of us using catchall addresses at our domains would be seeing spam all over the namespace. As it stands, over 95% of my spam is to addresses used with this slashdot account, although it usually takes a month or three for an address to start getting hit.

    I guess I just see it as such a waste to clone something like that; if you’re gonna put forth the effort required to get something like that up and running, how about some improvement? I’m a pretty serious FlickrWhore, and I sure as hell don’t think it’s a perfect paradigm with no room for improvement.

    But then again, maybe in six months I’ll be a huge ZoomrWhore instead. Who can say?

    As someone who raises hermit crabs*, I can relate. Those things can be insanely creepy when viewed close up. And I’ve always said that the difference between cockroaches and lobsters is merely a question of scale.

    Sort of. IIRC, it's based on nearby cell phone towers rather than satelites.

    By that logic a fax machine is a web server, since somebody can call and request a page be sent to them.
