A good explanation... except that the site does not mention anything about gravity and it's effects.

At just one place it mentions that the solar pressure is about 9m/s^2, less than 9.8m/s^2, which is lesser than what is needed. Then the article mentions that solar pressure could be used for powering crafts in the initial stages as it nears the sun.

Yeah, but getting it up there? And if the craft is that near to the sun, wouldn't it burn up or something?

So you would need something to put it up there, accurately, and then use an initial momentum from the sun by being close to it, but not very close, and evade both the gravities, and then get a velocity from all this. Wow!

I think we are missing something here...Any idea ppl?

There's this reasonably good book by Iain M Banks called The Player of games, where a game player (yeah, that's his profession!!) in the far future goes out to this civilization whose entire workings is based on a very complex game called Azad, and the profession, status etc of everybody else is chosen based on this! Otherwise, the status of this alien civilization is pretty similar to ours.

Ultimately, our man wins the game, against the emperor (the winner shall be the emperor), bringing out the msg that if we'd lost the game, we'd leave you alone till the next game. Else, all your games are belong to us :-)

The interesting part is how the aliens treat him, and how his whole victory is hidden etc etc.

So *how would* the aliens treat our games of democracy and wars and silly divisions among one another? Wouldn't that be fun to think about?!

This sure does promising enough. Another alternative using an identical technology is coupling two SQUIDs - Superconducting QUantum Interference Devices. SQUIDs.

These devices have excellent magnetic sensitivity. And when two of these thingies are coupled, you have your information travelling between one another through insulators at awesome speed (in these, even the superconducting electrons tunnel through).

Incidentally, I'm also working on SQUIDs, although on a theoretical basis. Getting to make a SQUID is, well, a little tough... So we are trying to find guys who'd give us Liquid Helium for free ;-)

Another interesting thing to do would be to quantumly couple 2 SQUIDs!!! And imagine building a Beowulf cluster of *those* !!! ;-)

I know this sounds like a flamebait. but eitherways....

I'd say the most important reason why people do not code is asm is just that it is difficult.
Most of the programmers out there are just people in the industry out there to make money. I do not mean to offend all the guys out there, but the truth is that most of the programmers who give into the hype of learning the 'latest a.k.a coolest' language are those who do it hoping that they'd be able make more money out of it.

Are you telling me that the web-designers and Java guys out there are actually interested in learning something for the heck of it? Hell, they do it because it helps fatten their wallets. Period.

And programmers out there who do it because they like it, would continue to do it whether or not they like it.

This is highlighted esp. for assembly language programmers. Had people coded the same way they did back in the days of PDP's/286/386, optimising that lines of assembly code, we'd really be making use of the awesome computing power we have today.

I still just hope that there are Mels still out there.

It pains me that such things happen in my country, but I'm definitely not surprised.

This is precisely what would happen if people with absolutely no knowledge of computers come into such positions of power. But unfortunate bureaucracy and what not has made this happen.

At a point of time, this guy Dewang Mehta used be the host on computer TV shows in our nat'l television channel.

He is akin to people who think that they are technology freaks cool after reading wired, or in this case, after using MS products. In one show of his, he advocated the use of Windows as the best and most trustworthy OS available. Wow!

And the sad part is that all the good minds are scared to do anything. A lot of people I know are afraid to publish articles pertaining to sites with weak security for fear of getting caught. You may wonder why.....

It so happens that we have formulated "anti-hacking laws" to catch the so called hackers, and these guys are on the lookout for anybody even vaguely fitting the profile. You see, they have not even made a single arrest as of date, and so they're waiting for some poor curious soul to get trapped so that they can immediately brand him a damn hacker who tried to jeopardise the nation's security (or something to that effect).

And in the end, the ppl end up hiring script kiddiez for security? Wow! My country is really going to dogs.

Well, I live in a third world country too (India) and as far as I know, all the best minds in the teaching community (esp.comp sci) sooner or later move onto greener pastures in the industry. I do not know about the Europe and America and other developed nations, but here in developing ones, it suffices to say that quality of those remaining are far from good.

I'm doing my 2nd year engineering in Electronics & Communications, and I found a job working as a programmer and research intern on AI, and in my experience I have learnt a lot more in this internship than anybody could ever teach me. Given that my favourite area is AI, I have met some very good people into this field after joining this place, which has been, if not anything, a great source of inspiration.

This is not to say that college is bad. It's great, but the amount of resources that you have at your disposal in a company - books, unlimited internet usage (most of us Asians aren't as lucky as you western counterparts to have unlimited usage at educational institutions!) and people willing to guide you - that's something that'll really help you in the long run.

After joining this place, I have learnt a lot more practically, hands-down-experience, than I ever would have. I have seen a real hacker at work, I have been part of a project developing a full-fledged NLP app. from scratch, I have worked on hardcore AI areas and I have met people. Not anybody and everybody, but people with real skills, people who have been there, and fellow hackers.

You see, even I'm planning to do my research into AI, and this company has agreed to sponsor me at a good univ., be it in India or abroad. And plus, I have work experience which will help me. More than anything, I'm now motivated more than ever.

All those people who say that they do their work for the love of it, should refuse to take any patents or any other kind of materialistic ownership. If fact, this is the right time to know how many musicians actually do it for the love of music, and how many for fame and glory. I'm glad that this is not the case in the computer industry. It's true that most programmers do more for the money than for the job, but it is the work of programmers who did it for the sheer love of it rather than for money that has got computing to where it is today.
