    One is a an easy-to-use operating system, the other is not.

    One is free, one is not. OTOH, considering the rest of your post, the moderators will probably see the words Linux and bad a couple of times and you'll be known as flamebait. This is /., remember? You're not supposed to state your opinion, you're supposed to say what they wanna hear...

    Well, Apple is supposed to be the graphical environment, so adding a feature that'll make pretty pictures prettier would be a pretty awful thing to do, wouldn't it? Do not moderate unless the sarcasm stains your monitor...

    I don't really care what the lawyer would say about it. As far as I know, it's not even illegal. What I do care about, is it moral?

    In the book they did not call him Muad'Dib before going to the desert, as that was the name he chose himself after killing Jamis. I somehow don't remember what they did call him, but it's discussed with Leto and Yueh quite often before the Harkonnen attack.

    Scuse me? Yueh not important. He was one of the best examples in the book of a person being forced to do something against his will. Basically he triggers the plot. As for Duncan being alive, Ghola's 'R Us...

    still something I'd like to hear people's opinion about. A cooleague of mine who is in tech-support as well was forced to reply an e-mail in which he stated that the installation of a host-controlled modem under Linux was something we do not provide tech-support for. After this, the customer took the entire mail, including my colleague's first and last name, and posted it to a newsgroup. Since this is an article about freedom to put things on the web, my question is, is this acceptable. I mean, I wouldn't mind someone posting my support e-mail to the web, but including my name...

    I would think it should be Microsoft's job to keep track of that information, not the customer.

    • M$: Not our problem, cough up, now!

    With both *nix and Win* systems, you can restrict the user's capabilities.

    I concur to thee, thou art right. I should add, however, that our sysadmins have been trying to restrict our access for ages now, and every security measure they have put in place has been nullified in less than 10 minutes. The fact that I have to right-click on the trashcan and select "explore" to open Windows Explorer has nothing to with this of course:-)

    Of course, that much money (just the money they're paying to take care of uncertain licenses) could probably also buy CD burners and enough blanks to create no-license-hassles copies of Linux or Free / Open / NetBSD for every computer the city owns.

    Sure it does. Does it also cover the expenses required in order to get the expertise to get those 6000 systems running and keep 'm that way? With all due respect, but I still think a M$ network is easier to maintain than a *Nix one. And as a previous poster already mentioned, we have to care for our Minesweeper-addicted public workers, don't we?

    If M$ will accept this money as being "sufficient" then I can imagine Virginia doing this. Digging up all the paperwork might very well cost them tons of time and money anyway. Without approving of M$ methods, how hard can it be to store your licenses in such a way that you can retrieve them if you actually need them?

    Besides having loaded Linux operating system, this smart phone (brand name; Palmi) that incorporates the functions of both cellular phone and PDA, also provides strong multimedia functionalities including animation, MP3, video communication, to name a few.

    Mmhh, in view of the RIAA article earlier today, this baby is a fine definition of a portable crime tool. Video, MP3's, everything you could ever need...the only thing it needs is a CD-writer.
