  1. Re:Why? on Update On Wayland and X11 Support · · Score: 1

Do you think that graphics on Linux is in a good state? Do you like tearing on all your animations? Are you happy about all your graphics going through layers and layers of libraries to get to the screen? To me, brought up on the Amiga, Linux graphics is just plain terrible. If Wayland can put all the dross of X into libraries or a daemon that start only when necessary, I'd be very very happy. I'd also like to be able to run my terminals full-screen with 8-bit graphics and my desktop at 32-bit, but that may be asking for too much. The console hasn't been the same since the demise of SVGATextMode.

  2. Phone, and E-mail? Maybe chat? on Ask Slashdot: Recommendations For Linux Telecommuting Tools? · · Score: 1

The basics for communicating are: Phone, E-mail and Chat. Linux can do these. You forgot to say what work you do, though.

I use a hardware VoIP box (Linksys) for international communications so that I can use a real phone, offlineimap to keep IMAP fast enough to use, and ssh with port-forwarding instead of a VPN. (Create a local IP address on device 'lo' for each machine on the remote net, add the names to /etc/hosts, and then connect local <=> remote IPs with the same port number on the ssh command-line. You'll have to stop Apache/sshd/etc listening on those fake local IP addresses, though, but at least this way you can connect to N remote http or ssh servers each on port 80/22 of their own dedicated IP address, without having to remap anything locally at connect time.)

  3. What style? Shiny Apple/Bose, or industrial look? on Ask Slashdot: Shortcuts To a High Tech House · · Score: 1

Industrial might be cheap -- paint all the walls white, have exposed cabling everywhere, but neatly ordered and stapled to the wall, have exposed cable-run trays suspended from the ceiling. If the wife likes industrial style it could be cheap enough.

Yes, Slashdot is the Borg. Wrongthought is punished by expulsion (== Karma Terrible, I should know). As long as you're interested in what Slashdotters know and generally accept, there is valuable information and insight to be found in the comments here. Don't look for revolutionary ideas, though.
