    Stupid bullshit legalistic world, in which you can't assault people without fearing some bs trumped up lawsuit. What we need is tort reform! Less money going to all the lawyers, and more money to the guy who sells the billy clubs and socks-full-of-batteries.

    what ipod touch are you using? I have a second generation model from ~2008 or 2009, and it upgraded to ios5 no problem. As for apps, I've read a couple cases of malicous updates, but generally speaking the apps that do that are spanked in the press / blogosphere. what apps have you had a problem with in this regard?

    They must have a clinical definition of "planning" that is more precise than we normally think of animals. Cuz I can tell you that my dog used to plan ahead. He was devious! Maybe this has to do with the time scale - she would usually make 5 minute plans, rather than 2 hours or whatever the monkey's time scale is.

    I agree mostly with you. Yu're right, they can directly mitigate their own emissions when possible, and buy renewable energy credits to cover the rest. RECs aren't hand waving. It's an established system for optimizing and maximizing green hous gas reductions across the economy.

    The summary is asking the wrong question. It's not whether piracy prevents blockbusters. It's how much does piracy reduce the box office receipts of new releases. Maybe avengers would have made $5 million more without piracy, or $20 million more, or 25 cents more. I have no idea. But let's at least ask the right questions. I'd appreciate anybody's thoughts on how much the piracy cost.

    Cfls already get 50-70 lumens per watt, so I don't see why I should get out of my seat for a $60 led at does the same. Kind of a straw man to compare them to incandescents, when obviously the most relevant comparison is against fluorescents. IMHO, the best use of LEDs is as a built in light source for particular uses. If you're putting a bulb in a socket anyways, then there's no benefit over cfls.

    An AppleScript / Automator script can step through files on a hd, open them, and catch a thrown error if the open fails. Tis sits a good automated way to glad the bad ones. Not the fastest method, but it could run at night.

    you seem to be surprisingly ok with the fact that your computer crashed and all your documents and media were corrupted, as was your backup. I would have been beside myself. Hulk smash! Please let us know what different set ups you're exploring to avoid this.

    Same with the tablet, Microsoft and others envisioned it years before the iPad, however it wasnt until the iPad that it became a good product people wanted to buy.

    if you read the steve jobs bio, you'll see that apple was working on a tablet for 10 years before the ipad came out. hey were creating at the same time as others, they just didn't release crap and held off until they got it right.

    stupid browser privacy scheme that does nothing to protect users from the real bad guys

    since google was the one hacking cookies into the browser, i'd say goog qualifies as the "real bad guys" in this case.

    Are you implying that Safari's default privacy settings somehow violate a web standard? Which one, please? And that goog had to circumvent it in order to make the browser standards compliant?
