  1. Trying to crush icann and take over the net on VeriSign CEO on Commercializing the Internet · · Score: 1

To me this sounds like VeriSign is trying to strip ICANN of it's power as well as forever remain in control of the root servers by commercially branding them their own. Right now icann is the only thing standing between them and doing whatever they want. I think this is strike 3 for verislime. Icann should strip them of the root server duties and hand the job over to another company or a group of elected people who won't try and take over the world.

I picked up 7.0 upgrade from amazon for $100us after rebate a little over a year ago. The price hike on 8.0 is enough to stop me from upgrading for a while. The new features are nice and might be worth $100, but not $170 :)

I'm glad Adobe is taking steps to prevent warez kiddies from hindering profits. But if anything, shouldnt this lower the price? Maybe we'll see a price drop with 9.0 if adobe hasn't chased away all its business (warez kiddies included).

  12. Re:How about asking a server if it sent the email? on ISP Operator Barry Shein Answers Spam Questions · · Score: 1

Authentication is the key. Here's an idea I came up with... While this may not fix the spam problem it will fix spam sent from fake or unauthorized domains.

[Server A] sends email to [Server B]
[Server B] resolves the reply address domain to an IP
[Server B] contacts the email server at that IP and asks if it sent message ID (some message ID)

    if reply=yes, deliver
    else, delete message

Creating such a simple method of sender authenication would mean only people with valid email servers and reply addresses could spam. That means if/when spamming becomes illegal spammers can't hide behind a fake address and will be traced back to the actual server it was send from (and domain). At some point they will just give up because the risk of being caught and charged is just too high.

A day like today where sendmail has to be patched worldwide would have been a great time to put out this feature. We may not be able to enable the feature for a year or two until everyone is patched. Or just stop accepting non authenticated messages all toegther and force a massive upgrade.

Didnt Delvenjah incorporate DALnet in March of 1996? It would make them an easy target for the riaa.

IRC (dalnet and efnet specifically) has gone downhill over the years. Lots of attacks & splits, each server has a lifespan of about 2yrs, mostly idlers and bots. The idea of an open, unmoderated free chat network is great but this is a great example of how things can go to hell if it isn't taken care of. Dalnet is making the right move by banning the warez kiddies. This will cut down on idle connections and atracting the wrong kind of people.

Most providers are starting to place caps between 5 and 20gb per month on cable/DSL up here tho. Maybe that's the answer to cheap broadband. Cap it so you don't have your leechers.
