I know there is no room for a pro IP debate on/., but it's not really good when you come up with an idea that'll make you a fortune and someone steals it.
Let's just say that the fear is that the Chinese will steal the chips and reverse engineer them. [and this whole thing isn't about the military]. You have to remember that there is no way to pursue that crime in China. They aren't worried that someone will copy the movies, people are already doing that. [and have been for years]
The problem is your idea, something you worked hard on, got patents for etc. will be copied over and over and you've not only been treated like a fool, but you just lost a market of 1 billion+ people.
All to often people come to America and 'steal' technology and 'export' it back to their country with no right to do so.
What someone posted:
"What is interesting is that looking at their statistics it is clear that online casinos cheat when they detect perfect play, but it is very very hard to prove"
The thing is, wouldn't this system prove that it's impossible to win?
I'm sure they use some sort of algorithims to deal the cards and can never really be random. And what dictates 'perfect play'? Counting, in poker? Wouldn't a trained player play similar to the computer? Garbage in, garbage out.
It really proves that to get the best chances, GO TO THE CASINO! At least you can see if they are swapping card on you or something.
I love pointing out that I live in Cincinnati for some reason or another. I don't know why because I'd love to move... to let's say Savannah.
But back on topic. Here in Cincy [where Carmen Electra is from] we've had DSL before it was a buzzword you'd see in every Ziff Davis mag. We had cable in limited areas for a while, but upgraded pretty fast. Time Warner rebuilt the whole network, at least thats what I got from the letters you'd see tacked up in apartments and such.
I'd say were pretty quick to get 'broadband' access here, not like Cali, or Tokyo, but we get it pretty fast. Our local Telco [Cincinnati Bell, Duh?!] was even featured in some crappy Ziff Davis mag for their 'Internet Call Manager'.
What was the point? Oh yeah, if you want broadband, come here. RoadRunner Business Class, SDSL [downtown only, i think], ADSL... whatever.
But I'll move where this gets implemented first.
My question is, why do we need a 'last mile' solution in this day and age? Why aren't we moving away from clients and get into complex networking of home users computers? Computers are getting more powerful, and more people are buying computers. Why does the internet community [big guys] not demand more from the home user?
What about SEGA, in my mind the N64 is behind, the Gamecube is just to come, and Sony gets all the hype.
I love the dreamcast, but sometime very soon, they'll be gone. It's the obvious choice over the PS2 or the rest. Whoever is putting the captial forth could reopen the DC factories! I know they could still sell some hardware since DC programming is just starting.
This could cause a ripple effect for SEGA. Sell the info to whomever is going to do this [SUN?] and it all becomes opensource.
Freaking licensing!
SEGA could make some extra cash, and the whole time us DC lovers could reap the benefits.
You need to understand that in some parts in Africa it's customary for the woman to 'dry' her vaginal area before sex. It shows that they haven't been unfaithful to their men. Sometimes this causes bleeding which makes her [and him] more likely to pass or recieve the virus.
Ethnocentric!
While the Internet could share the information, and help spread the word, you can't make someone change their ways.
So here is a problem. I don't really think it's right to tell someone to change their custom. On the other hand I'm weiry of anyone who tells a third world country to wear protection; sometimes their intentions are not what they say they are.
But the Internet would work very well for other things. Building drainage to keep dirty water away from the clean water. You could instantly talk to any college professor. The town could learn that using the same water to bath in that they drink in is causing "river blindness".
Maybe we have a P2P network idea here. MP3's of info - text files - video for the right bandwidth. We all know using Linux will only help with the TCP/IP. Sleek kernels - no unneeded overhead.
They really could use existing networks - gnutella wouldn't be to bad, except their ability to relay searches would be limited [right?]. Something like a web spider that searches the text would be nice, but lets stay away from that idea - plain text would be a great, quick way to find information.
I doubt we will actually see this, but if we do, I'd like to go and help set up solar panels and the like.
So in order to get rid of harmless bacteria, I'm going to put a harmless one on my body. e. coli is e. coli. It could always mutate into something that lets say, eats off your skin.
sounds like cutting of your nose to.... forget it.
Usually as the pressure gets lower, and when the gasoline stream gets smaller, your chances of the flame following the gas into the resevoir gets bigger.
Don't do it. Just spit gas from your mouth and light that. For god sakes, get some WD-40 - thats awsome and it makes noise. But WD-40 isn't safe either, see above.

So now I'm carrying ID without even knowing it. They can't come up and ask everyone for a fingerprint sample to check your ID - but now they will. That's what is scary.
No one has mentioned this at all. You don't have to tell them who you are if they just come up to you and ask you. But finally:
"We all recognize the need for effective law enforcement, but we should also understand our own rights and responsibilities -- especially in our relationships with the police. Everyone, including minors, has the right to courteous and respectful police treatment. " --ACLU
Earlier I stated that it's legal for them to take your picture - and I'm right.
I live in Ohio, just as you do, but once your in a public place (or go unto private property which can reserve the right for THEM to take it) you are no longer private. I believe that is a National practice, but I know for sure it is here in Ohio.
When my [ex]girlfriends house caught on fire, the news crew showed up, and filmed her and her family - I asked them to stop and they complied. But later I called the news station to apologize for my rudeness I was informed that I really had no right to tell them, but they wouldn't put us on TV against our will. Only out of courtesy.
They were being nice. Now when I called the Cincinnati Post (which I worked for there sister company at the time- Gannett Media) they told me there was nothing we could legally do for publishing a picture of two family members. We were on the sidewalk, and the police agreed, we were in public and there was nothing we could do.
So there you go. Even a lawyer friend [retired] said sorry - nothing could be done.
The thing is, they aren't going to prevent crime, they aren't going to look inside your soul and say this guy might kill someone.
Not every crime is caused by a repeat offender. Not all crimes are violent. Not all crimes are really crimes - because [yes it can happen!] the law is wrong.
I can almost see that you think 'criminals' should all recieve strict punishments - lex talionis - law of the claw and all that eye for an eye stuff.
But not everyone agrees.
Also, take into consideration, most people hauled in because of this system would more than likely be wanted for traffic tickets or such. If there were so many rapist/murders on the streets in Ybor, they wouldn't be buying this system to take some snapshots.
Cops can sit back, and do nothing while the computers do all the work. You want a cop everywhere? In every store - in every aisle? In every dark corner watching you? It's starting
Why even have cops?
I could see this being used in pro pot rallys to snap everyone and see if they have a reason to harass them. On the visionics web site they advertise for "Human ID at a distance". This will eventually be used to pick out previos offenders and harass them. Giving no one a break.

Here in cincinnati all the radio stations are already clear channnel! Even a TV station.
Why would I listen to this?

I don't even own a modem anymore. There is one in my closet, but it's a 'soft'modem with sound etc. Fuck all that.

PGP in Iran anyone?
Considering there is a planned hard drive, keyboard and mouse there is more possibilities.
Not to mention - if someone turned them onto the hardware specs you'd have an OS for it.
Still, I'd be using the Sega Dreamcast for my evil doing ways. It's so much cooler.
BAN THE PS2 ALL TOGETHER! BRING BACK THE DC!
Sweat shops in America!
Or Mexico!
'Cause MS is owns the government. Then these commie linux bastards will take over!

Thankfully I've got cable! The wiring in my house won't even let a modem dial out. No online gaming for my dreamcast.
Imagine if we could cluster with... nevermind.
I thought I'd try to save ya', don't worry!
ALL YOUR FANCY BANDWIDTH BELONGS TO US!
Let's not bring up the fact that all CD's being sold send money back to sony.

How about this, don't make one, not a good idea.
Just think, you go get some pot becuase you've been programming all night. You want to cool off.
You go get it. You smoke it.
Cops bust in.
Later in court they prove that you bought from this busted dealer cause they traced the cash back to you taking money out of the bank that day.
Fuck.
They really need to take the link to the "BSD comparison" down.

Not to mention the fact that most non-whites are prosecuted more than whites.
More blacks and hispanics are harrased by police than whites.
Look at Cincinnati... like the top thread says - the cops are the criminals, and the blacks are the victims.

in america we do things on a case by case basis right?
thats the point - this thing can distinguish. But neither can law enforcement.
The law is only setup to describe guilt - not innocence.

The problem is, one of the great things about linux is I can use any window manager I want.
Some times I run KDE as root, sometimes something else. The beauty is it can be changed to what I need it for.
Write apps that generate menus based on installed software - windows doesn't even do that.
