Well, Apple has been patent trolling Samsung for quite a while now. They are very litigation-happy. Why not crush a local apple shop for the sake of their in-house trainee lawyer?
The US has been focused more on mathematics for as long as I can remember. That's one reason why the US is usually behind China in terms of math, China places a ton of value on turning children into calculators rather than understanding any of the math they're being expected to rote memorize.
I'm not so sure that going the computer route is such a great idea. It's all well and good to use computers and calculators, but if you don't know your times tables and you can't do long division, you're going to be stuck having to have a calculator at all times. Which is more reasonable now than it used to be, but you'd be surprised how much faster it can be to do things on paper sometimes.
Oh, and good luck getting a calculator to tell you what went wrong when a number you get isn't right.
The problem is that solving complicated algebraic equations require you to have good mental arithmetic skill, otherwise everything becomes a pain. If the students can't do basic arithmetics quickly, they will find it hard to reason about complex problems. I feel the new approach by Estonia might backfire on them once students reach high school.
Actually, when it comes to correctness: the International System of Units defines kilo-, mega- and giga- as powers of 10 instead, not powers of 2. I think it is much clearer for a user to define a megabyte as a million bytes. How memory is handled inside a computer is something developers care about, no user should be bothered with it. So all in all I agree with the marketing-people, albeit for different reasons.
I think patent should only cover ideas that are implemented. Under the current system, if you patent some ideas that cannot be implemented now, you essentially stop people in the future from implementing them, until your patent expires. This stifles innovation.
In the land of the free and the home of the brave, people are so afraid terrorist attack, they have decided to give up their own liberty (and possibly their health) in exchange for (a possibly false sense of) security.
.....
I think that might be how the rest of the world perceive the new USA.
CAs keep getting hacked recently. How can I place my trust on CAs these days? Perhaps the browser should inform the users about certificate change for individual websites, similar to SSH?
Except that most of these funny posts about CCTV get taken down by the Internet police in China, CCTV is sponsored by the central government. One of my friend's parent's company got visited by the police, because one of his employee made fun of CCTV, they figured out that IP address came from that company. Fox News is not sponsored by any branch of your government, you can bad mouth it as much as you want, and you won't get visited by the police.
in high resolution glory: http://159.226.88.59:7779/CE1OutENGWeb/ It is hosted on some weird IP address... I know... You need to register to download too. NASA tend to release everything on their website, and you don't tend to need to register.
Oh really? I am from China. I can tell you with 100% certainty that nobody believes the 7pm news from CCTV-1. Chinese netizens tend to make fun of them. It is totally biased. It shies away from serious issues such as train crashes. It is a mouth piece for the communist party. You have absolutely no idea what you are on about.
What a surprise...Curiosity has been just begun its 10th years of operation. It has space rated hardware, which means the hardware itself is not the best in its class, in terms of speed. iPhone 5 was only released last year...
In the two years following Obama's election, business failures increased by 40%. 40% man. If you like Obama, fine. Maybe you like his smile. Maybe you think he smells nice, whatever. But don't lie to yourself - he's radically anti-business.
Which Obama's policy led to your loss? What do you mean by "business failures"?
Well, I think quite a lot of people in the west are afraid of the rise of Chinese economy, fearing that China is going to take over the world one day. I think it is exactly this kind of behaviour that is causing the fear. I am from China. I think China is basically like Soviet Union with slightly more freedom and better economy. The political structure and censorship process are both still very Soviet-like. This kind of news does not do any good for China's international image. Most people in west don't want the world to be ruled by a nation that does not allow people's mind to be free. I personally don't want my thought process to be dictated by the commies from Beijing.
I kind of think that the ethics board should seriously look into this. Is the newborn going to be classified as a human? If it is, then is it fair for it to be subjected to all the DNA defects induced by 30,000 years exposure? Is this safe for the mother?
Yes, they can. There are votes in China. It's not overly dissimmilar than the US. The primaries allow you to select a candidate from a short-listed group selected by the elite. The general election lets you select between candidates approved by the party. That there's only one party in China and two in the US (so no need for both a primary and election with only one party), though the two in the US are controlled by the same interests, so we have one party with two names. Again, the more people try to explain the differences, the more they look the same.
Well nothing stops you from running as a third-party candidate from the US. And US has freedom of expression. In China if you run as a third-party candidate, the government will shut you down. Nobody is stopping Ron Paul from calling himself Republican, and spread his ideas. But if Ron Paul was in China, he would have been locked up in a jail.
Thanks to those who started petitions for Master Chief statues, roaming motorcycle gangs of justices, and Death Stars. Without you folks making jokes out of serious attempts to make political headway on important issues, we might not have had our collective voices diluted. Making a mockery of those interested in forcing the white house to defend, or oppose, or otherwise make a solid stand of issues sure is helpful.
Let's see what nonsense you can come up with to raise that threshold from 100,000 to 250,000.
(and you wonder why rich americans with deadly diseases and debilitating conditions leave the US to go on "Medical vacations" in the EU and Thailand.)
It is the other way around in the UK. Rich people tend to go to America to get medical procedures that aren't approved by the health authorities here.

Well, porting Office to iOS would potentially reduce the sale of Microsoft Surface. I reckon Microsoft want to have a firmer control of their users.
It would be nice if they could compare the reconstructed faces with real faces.
Time to learn LaTex. Open Office is not suitable for complicated/large documents.

JEDEC units work in the power of 2.

Diversifying investment portfolio is something that all good investors tend to do. Eric Schmidt is a businessman too.

Can they go into Canada or Mexico and seize stuff? Is this even legal? Or does it count as an invasion? Or has it got to be in the sea?
Fox News
"Faux News", FTFY.

In case you wonder, I am actually from China.
At least you guys in the US can elect your representative who vote stuff for you. People in China cannot even vote for representatives.
Giving the guy in the neighborhood that's torn down for the Olympic Village a vote on whether to do it is inappropriate.
So you don't want your politicians to represent your view, you don't want them to give a damn about your life. Wow, you are selfless.
The politicians have a better view of what's best for China.
So do the dictators in the other countries, at least that's what they claim. I get it, you prefer some kleptocracy and cronyism.
Damn, I don't have mod points today.
