  1. Re:Apple is stepping up on Panther's TextEdit to Open MS Word Files · · Score: 2, Informative

IE will continue to evolve on Mac, but it will be only for inclusion in MSN. Standalone versions for both Mac and Windows are going away.

Like surfing the internet is something everyone needs to do with their computer, enough to make it part of the OS! What are these guys thinking? :)

  2. Have a little imagination, people. on Major Step Forward For SVG in the Desktop · · Score: 1

I see all the chatter about how you tradeoff CPU for RAM savings when using SVG, bitmaps are much better, XML parsing speed, etc.

You guys are missing the point. It gives a jumping off point for many new ideas. Why not a SVG-based window server? Let's get rid of X11 once and for all!! (asbestos underwear deployed) Would gzipped SVG be smaller in size than gzipped X11 when transmitted over the wire? Might make remote desktops as ubiquitous as the web browser is these days.

Also, use your 3D card to offload the process of drawing of a display to where it makes sense.

Isn't that what Quartz Extreme on the Mac is all about? I know only specific configurations are supported, but the idea is sound.

Display PDF and QE seem to be working for them quite nicely.

    Just a thought.

Oh well. Anyone wanna buy a brand new 667? (two weeks old, great condition.) :)

Think different, for a moment, will you all?

    1) Apple is a hardware company, plain and simple. OSX just helps them sell hardware.

    2) OSX on Intel or AMD will run on Apple's hardware only. (Personally, I'd like to see a new Power Mac based on AMD's forthcoming SledgeHammer chip)

    3) Apple continues to survive due to relentless pursuit to making the best products they can. They have capitalized for years on the shortcomings of Windows and commodity PC hardware. Why would they want to throw themselves at the wolves of the existing PC market? OSX on current PC hardware means supporting all the bad design decisions and bugs PC hardware designers have had to make over the years. Supporting the existing PC market is the worst bad idea in the history of bad ideas.

For those of you old enough to remember, the Amiga had preemptive multitasking from day one. It worked much better than Classic/OS9's "background processing."

That was one of my first gripes when I sold my beloved Amiga 3000 and got a PowerMac 6100 the first week they were out.

  7. The REAL way is should be... on MPAA vs. Television · · Score: 1

As has been debated in forum before, government reaction to media giant corporate pressure has always been to treat John Q Public as a thief.

I'm relatively new to posting here on /., so forgive me if I'm rehashing something that's already been rehashed. :)

The answer is simple. Make ALL TV pay-per-view. Right now, it's the potential loss of advertising and distribution revenue that is driving all these draconian ideas to restrict copying and subsequently destroy fair use.

We should pay for every program we watch. The fee would be inversely proportional to the amount of advertising you're willing to view. This removes timeshifting and commercial skipping from the equation. Subsequent viewings could be discounted.

The very real laws of supply in demand will play a greater role in the product.

To the media companies: Beware! This double-edged sword will make you bring the level of TV programming up to something for which we are willing to pay, as opposed to the garbage that passes for cutting edge TV today. Gimmick TV will be at an end. Also consider the wonderful other streams of revenue that could spring up! Want to watch the entire second season of your favorite show? That's a package deal available for a limited time, so act now! This will protect your distribution and advertising revenue, without destroying our right to fair use. Let's see some creativity and your hard work will be rewarded.

For those of you speculating that you could just digitize the analog signal coming from your PVR to the TV, that's great. It works, and protects fair use since the copies made are of a lesser quality than the original.

Think about it. Supply and demand. This solution simply shifts the model to the consumer and the provider from the provider and the advertiser. Looks like a good way to do it for me.

  8. Apple's trying to gouge us? I don't think so. on Apple Reveals Mac OS X 10.2, 17" iMac, Windows iPod · · Score: 2, Insightful

I bought a Mac last summer because OSX seemed like the best thing since sliced bread for me as a Java developer. Java version parity with official JDK releases really leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Performance of the Apple runtime is barely tenable. For me, the Mac has become a curiosity, a toy, nothing more. I've gone back to x86 Linux for the majority of my development work. I'm even eyeing the Mac I have as a candidate for Yellow Dog or Gentoo PPC. I will buy the upgrade, but there's no motivation to do so by the end of the year.

Stop whining about Apple's upgrade policies, since they've historically been done this way. You always have a choice. That's the great part about capitalism.

However, for those of you for which the Mac is a primary computer, think of the alternatives.

    1) Load Yellow Dog/Gentoo/. Your cost is nothing but time. Learn to become one with the source. MacOnLinux will allow you to run any Classic apps you'll absolutely need.

    2) Sell the Mac. Buy a PC. Move to the Orwellian world of Microsoft licensing vis a vis Windows and Office XP. Enjoy PAYING EVEN MORE for EVEN LESS.

    3) Suck it up, plop down the 130 clams and support one of the best damn *nix desktops I've seen to date. Normal people can use it! It even has Office for those of you who need it.

Apple is trying to make themselves ubiquitous when it comes to consumers who have digital cameras, camcorders, mp3 players, etc. Everything they do now is moving the company closer and closer to that vision.

Even for those of you who bought the public beta and the first full version, 130 bucks is cheap for what you get. Yes, printing may not be perfect. Yes, there are still a lot of bugs. Yes, Apple has a penchant for adding things we current users don't need or want, but they have to balance what existing customers want vs. what will bring new users to the platform.

The following is a personal motto of mine, which gathers more credibility each day:

Pay now or pay later, but keep in mind that you WILL pay.

Pony up the $130 bucks for the upgrade. Be a good MacHead and support your platform of choice. Use something else if you don't. The ultimate alternative is that Bill gets your money and control over your desktop.

    Rant complete.
    Ready.

  9. So my 9 month old iMac stays at 10.1.x? on Apple Drops Mac OS 9 · · Score: 1
Let me get this straight, 10.2 will not work at all, or 10.2 will just not take advantage of the graphics card in my 2001 indigo iMac?

I bought an iMac to get on the OS X bandwagon, and now I'm going to have to buy another Mac or leave the party?

Someone please tell me that I'll be able to upgrade to 10.2, or I'm getting out the Gentoo PPC disk out right now and blowing the Mac away.

If my less than 1 year old Mac is now obsoleted by the OS, Apple just lost a customer, who up until today, was excited to be a Mac owner.

I could understand if my Mac was two or three years old, but 9 months? Sheesh!!!

I was excited about Jaguar until I read about Quartz Extreme.

    Great. Just great.
