  1. How much will they charge? on Microsoft Vows Security Commitment on Win2K · · Score: 5
Included in Microsoft's plans are 24-hours-per-day, seven-days-a-week security hot lines, consultations, and collaboration with other vendors on security issues, Valentine said.

I used to work for a Microsoft Solution Provider, whose job it was to sell and support Microsoft products. And yet they have several different levels of support which they charged us for. We actually had to pay for "Premium" support to get access to information, knowledge base articles etc that would help us fix or workaround a problem one of our clients had with their products. In other words, they were denying us access to information, fixes, known problems, incompatabilities, etc. that would help us do our job supporting THEM and THEIR software unless we paid them. And we were an "Official" Microsoft Solution Provider!!

  2. Re:Jon Katz, you're so full of ***, no offence! on Please Die3: The Abuse of Freedom · · Score: 1

First of all I would argue that hostility towards others is not nearly the same proportion in the real world as it is on Slashdot. As Jon noted, the vast majority of flamers would *not* say those things to someone's face.

Second, hearing everything that everyone has to say about the topic is fine. It's the ones who have nothing to say about the topic and simply post crap that is the problem. I don't feel a comment of "go fuck yourself and die" as a response to ANY topic is relevant or needed.

Third, there is a lot more to online etiquette than read, post, or not. To even suggest that's all there is to it, in a post moderated up to five, only goes to show how far the breakdown has gone.

Fourth, why is starting AC posts at 0 so offensive to you? Why is banning AC posts so offensive to you? Anyone would still be free to post any kind of crap they want, they'd just have to do it under their own name. It doesn't restrict you from posting at all, it only restricts you from posting without taking responsibility for what you say. Then, and this is the best part, you go on to say that outlawing AC posts will prevent people from posting for fear of retribution in the form of flames and hate mail which is the POINT OF THE WHOLE SERIES!!!. The flames and hate mail and hostility is preventing people from joining online communities and participating in the discussion. You just proved his point.

I think the thing that distresses me the most about this whole thing is the sheer number of people actually arguing in favor of hostility, and then jumping all over Katz for even suggesting it's a problem.

The information IS free, the compiling of it into a usable form is not. Why is this such a hard concept to understand? If you want to take the time to compile a list of every city in the US and their zip code, you are welcome to do it. But if someone has ALREADY done it, I for one would be willing to pay for that.
Why do so many people have trouble distinguishing between raw data and usable information? This is a no brainer to me. That's why I pay for maps. Sure I could go to city hall, get the list of street names and the fucking surveyors maps or whatever, and create my own map. But why!!

Anyway, my biggest concern, given my admittedly shallow perception of things, is what's the point of looting stores? I was just at the CNN site and they had a picture of a guy breaking into Starbucks. WTF?
Seems a bit like the LA riots (which I was here for)after the Rodney King verdict. It was about Rodney King for about, oh, 15 minutes. Then it was about a brand new 27" TV!!
Why do protests that start out as having a valid point (again, I'm not up to speed yet) end up by rioting, trashing stores, burning cars and whatever else people can think up?

  20. Re:Slashdot's irresponsible "news" reporting on Bruce Perens Discusses Lawsuit Against Corel (UPDATED) · · Score: 1

What makes you think Slashdot is journalistic in any sense? They are a "portal" and "forum". When is the last time you've seen Slashdot break a story, researched, full text, etc etc? 99% of it is links to other sites where presumably the story has been researched, edited, passed by the lawyers etc. That's the portal part. Then when you're done reading the article you come back here and post a comment, or a comment to someone else's comment. That's the forum part.
Remember this is "News for Nerds" and "Stuff that Matters" not "News we hope everyone will agree with and post really nice things about Linux and generate good press". Neither Hemos or anyone else can predict how people will react to a story. They just post it, and at the time it was posted Bruce was contemplating a lawsuit. It isn't incumbent on Hemos to contact Bruce and ask "are you serious? Are you really gonna do this?"
As for Corel, I don't know if they've done anything wrong or not but I've seen enough problems reported that unless their distro cleans my apt and sucks my dick, I won't bother with it.
