    Oh my god, you mean to tell me that I could have gotten my MCSE and avoided going to college for my computer science degree? WOW! Does an MCSE course teach you about complexity theory, complier theory, algorithm implementation, and networking theory and practice? Does the phrase "two's complement" mean anything to an MSCE?

    This was bound to happen. How many OSes will the new company (HP and Compaq) have? Lets see: HP-UX, Open VMS, True 64 Unix, Windows NT, Windows 2000, Novell Netware.....blah, blah, blah.

    Maybe the new company should consider moving all their "big iron" to linux. One platform with the benefits of open source and free software.

    Yes, I can get my Samba machine to join a windows NT domain, but the samba machine uses it's LOCAL unix user list that can synchronize with a domain controller. If I add a user to the NT PDC, the unix machine does not replicate the user list. I have to manually add the user to the Unix box. Correct me if i'm wrong but the current stable version of Samba just can not do this.

    What? The TCO for IIS is rising so just....spend alot of time and money to switch to another web server????? Does this make sense? Who pays for the migration to another platform? Who pays to rewrite all the ASP stuff in Perl? I love these "business consultants". Lower your TCO by spending a crap load of money. What happens if/when apache becomes insecure? Big corporations can't just deploy different web-servers every other weekend!

    I am running a couple of web servers on my Cablevision cable connection. I run both Apache(linux) and IIS(windows). Cablevision blocked inbound port 80 during the Code Red fiasco because other people's boxes were flooding the network. I'm not a pirate, and my boxes are patched...I say shut off the dumb-asses and leave me alone.

    Finally! Someone with half a brain is regulating these idiots. This is not unfair, as a matter of fact, similar things happen in real life. For example: Fire inspections happen once a year at commercial buildings. If your fire systems are not up to code or malfunctioning, you get shut down. If your car is belching polutants, has bad brakes, or bad tires, you fail inspection and get off the road. It's for the protection of society! If you're too stupid to patch your IIS box, too bad!

    I'm waiting for the ablility to join a samba machine to an NT domain and have the Samba machine pull its user list from the NT domain controller. Active directory support and NT logins would be even better! I'd like to build a Linux based fileserver for my company but it would have to tie to an existing NT domain controller and pull its users from that PDC. I don't want to enter users into the systems twice, once for NT and once for Linux. Does anyone know if Samba 3.0 will support this?

    This law is completely stupid. The DMCA says ISP's must take steps to prevent access to copyrighted material on their networks, or risk being held liable for the damages? Does this mean we can hold Freightliner truck Co. responsible for the drugs being transported in their trucks? Should Freightliner take steps in the design of their trucks to prevent the transport of illegal cargo? Of course not! ISP's should come together and lobby congress to change this stupid law. The law should be written to hold USERS responsible for the content they post and download!

    Yeah, isn't that the truth. Try asking a bunch of CS 1 guys about "malloc". You'll probably get something like: Gee, what do you mean by allocating and de-allocating memory? Doesn't C++ have a garbage collector? What's a memory leak?

    I like Java a lot. But most of the embedded devices I use aren't that powerful. A JVM for those devices would really tax their abilities. Can you imagine?

    A:Hold on while my watch instantiates all the classes.....

    I realize this is temporary, eventually the embedded market will have some multi-Ghz stuff to run Java, then C can go away.

    No, I just had a brain fart...dynamic logic is used alot in computers....just not in current, popular CPUs. I wonder why it's not called capacitative logic or something like that.

    Sorry about that, I forgot about DRAM vs "flip-flop" memory. Yes, you are correct, refresh time does seem to be a wrench in the design phase.
    I'm not sure what I was thinking...I guess I didn't consider using that logic structure in a CPU.

    Instead of asking specific utility questions present your candidate with a problem scenario and ask them if they've ever encountered the scenario. If they haven't; ask them how they would solve the problem. The IT field evolves so quickly that your new hire must be able to self-find and self-teach solutions to new problems. If your candidate can't do that they will be useless in five years.

    What software divides the image and tells a particular video card to render a certain part of the screen? Is this done at the driver level? If so what facilitates the communication between drivers and cards? I'm not that familiar with clustering architecture, but i'm assuming that clustering and video rendering is transparent to the software generating the images. Any clustering gurus want to school me?
