  1. Re:Pitch is Boring -- study rhythm on The Geometry of Music · · Score: 1

The point is that this research says that rhythm is a greater differentiator between Bach and Coletrane, yet 99% of all music research ignores rhythm altogether.

So fine, don't throw out pitch completely -- I'd settle for even 10% of research on the more interesting bit. It'd be a start anyway.

  2. Pitch is Boring -- study rhythm on The Geometry of Music · · Score: 3, Insightful

Music theory is miles deep in frequency analysis, throw this one on that slag heap. I do congratulate him on proving that pitch is boring though: since his chordal (i.e., pitch-based) analysis manages to lump vastly different musics together, ironically he's shown that the vast majority of what makes them different from each other must be something else.

At the risk of drawing derision on financial software development, we couldn't possibly do what we do with offices. When the trading desk has a problem with your software system and you're bleeding money, it's battle stations. Much easier to have a big wide open room with everyone right there madly working on the solution. More sources of input, less redundant communication. The benefits of that are too good compared to the benefits of an office -- you just have to learn how to concentrate in the middle of a battlefield, sort of like that guy in the Seven Samurai who makes himself sleep when the time's available (and only when it's available!).

Course, we don't use cubes either, just a wide open floor with desks.

As I understand the phrase "Free as in Beer" is that it's an attempt to distinguish a product that's being distributed freely but *not* it's source. In the same way that free beer at a party does not give away the recipes and brewing techniques for those brands.

Would beer companies be offended by the phrase? They'd more likely adopt it as a slogan and launch a thousand more horrible commercials based upon it.

  5. Finally, we're catching up with the 3rd world on Caffeinated Beer Becomes a Reality · · Score: 1

My brother spent 4 years in Zaire in the peace corps. Since they didn't party that often it was imperative to get as much partying in as possible on the yearly occasions where they did. The way to do it was to put a cola-nut in each beer they drank so that they could load up equally on uppers with their downers.

Not my idea of fun, but then neither is getting malaria, skin cancer and living in a mud hut, so what do I know?

  6. Re:Space travel in the hands of the masses on Planning Phase Complete For Indian Moon Mission · · Score: 2, Insightful

The reason this is so cheap is because it's unmanned. Sending humans out there is the big difference, that's what makes things so hugely expensive. I agree that concentrating on cost-efficiency and variety is a great way to foster creativity (if that's what you meant) but I think there should be a lot more advances made before manned flights will become cost-effective. And only at that time, I would argue, does taking that step makes sense in terms of scientific progress.

  7. Please Prioritize Your Platform on Ask Libertarian Presidential Candidate Michael Badnarik · · Score: 1

I've seen a number of bullet points of the items you favor, but it's very important to know how you rank them in importance. I may agree in principal with items on your list but they just aren't high priorities for me (example, legalizing/decriminalizing marijuana and other drugs). I also saw absolutely *nothing* about reproductive rights, which seems odd for a party that emphasizes liberty. Do reproductive rights figure into your priorities somewhere?
