I realise you're obviously joking, but pity us poor souls who actually do have to use Solaris! Luckily here at work we have a RH6.2 server with everything installed, so I basically just use the Sun box as an X-server and run everything on the Linux box :-) The only commands I ever have to type in Solaris are the name of a script to open the x-server to the linux client apps, and telnet!

Sorry, but I've tried 2 SuSe distros (last was 7.2 pro) and had nothing but problems with both of them. In contrast I've used RH since 6.0 and I've always come back to it as the installer works well and out-of-the-box it's usually pretty stable. I install both using RPM and just building stuff - RPM can be a bit flaky, but it's generally ok.

SuSe (7.2) crashed during the install on a laptop, then when it did finish installing, there were dead processes mounting up all over the place. Switching from KDE to Gnome (my preferred desktop) lead to another crash and resulted in my not being able to log in until I removed the .gnome and .kde directories. I thought I'd try the font anti-aliasing, (silly me) it worked so well the font's become completely invisible! I could go on, but you get the idea...

I like to show my support by buying the distros, but I won't be trying SuSe again...

You know, if we all stopped laughing for a while and thought about this, we might do the open source community a bit of good. IIS servers have the virus, and they are probing servers all over the place, including BSD and Linux machines. Why not send out "vaccine" from the *nix boxes, and then tell every news-feed out there about how the OS community is helping to cure Microsoft's servers virus problems for free?

There's no way MS can attack this statement, since it would be true, and it'll go someway toward making their claims Linux is a "virus" seem even more absurd...

I wasn't aware that you could buy P2s that ran at 866mhz - is that an overclocked 233? You might also find the PC will work somewhat better if equipped with more than the 1/2 meg of RAM you currently have installed. What is it running? DOS?

  11. Re:Lock-in on MS getting rid of SAMBA? · · Score: 0

Maybe it's time for Apple to lower their hardware prices and try to steal some sales. OS-X (which kind of sucks at the moment - still) can use either NFS or samba to swap files with a linux server just fine. There's plenty of desktop software out there for it, and the hardware is nice (if overpriced).

I doubt they will while Jobs is still holding the reins, but here's hoping... BTW, I've already vowed never to buy another MS OS (only run Win2k on one machine now for a couple of non-MS apps, all my other machines run Redhat 6x/7x), and have already convinced family members (those who aren't "techies") to go with Apple instead of PC. I'm going over to Apple+linux when I next upgrade.

Of course, I still have to use the only Windows machine at work most of the time, <sigh> (everything else in Sun/Linux/Apple)

I totally agree with this. I've been using RH since 6.1, and totally gave up on IRC even though I like helping people solve their problems in my spare time (if I can help!)

It seems all the #linux* channels are full of 13yr olds who have somehow managed to get op status and feel it their duty to tell everyone how crap their choice of distro is, when I doubt many of them could even fill out an /etc/hosts file without screwing up!

I recently tried out SuSe 7.2 professional, since I was under the impression it was supposedly far ahead of RH. Perhaps I'm biased, but I found it totally unstable (default "install everything" install)! X would hang, especially if I tried to use Gnome instead of KDE. The network driver would stop working for no apparent reason, Yast2 seems to take forever for even the simplest of tasks (2 minutes to change the IP address - come on, I can do it by hand faster!) This was not a slow machine either (1200mhz Athlon, 256mb). As the dead processes mounted up, I totally lost enthusiasm.

I gave up on SuSe after a day - I like to support the movement by buying distros, but really... I'll never touch SuSe again - in comparison, I've had RH7.1 up and running without a hitch ever since. I'm sure SuSe must work adequately on some machines, and maybe I just had an unusual hardware config (but I doubt it), but I'm guessing it's just that I know RH, and not SuSe...

I also run w2k on one machine, as I need to use certain apps that don't exist for Linux, but for everything else, it's Gnome/Ximian for me, under Linux. I think it's a bit childish to brag about hardware too (and if I only had a dual 550 I sure as hell wouldn't advertise the fact) but rest assured, I've run Linux on all sorts of hardware, from very low-end to real screamers and it always performs.

FYI, I have a box here at home running RH6.2 that's now been running for close to a year, 24hrs per day. If w2k is more stable than that, I'd be very surprised. Now go back to playing with your toy, kid...
