IBM has openly stated they would like to move all their hardware to Linux. Does this mean they are closed source simply because they sell hardware?
The irony out of all this is that IBM had their lunch eaten by Microsoft because they thought the money making in computers would be from hardware. They gave away the farm, at the time.
But what if all the predominant operating systems are free software? Where is the profit to be found? Why in hardware and Services, of course. Linux perfectly fits the earlier vision for them.
It is unfair to categorize IBM with Oracle. IBM has taken a real leadership role in the community, and has stayed fairly agnostic, supporting many different companies and endeavours, but not tying to any one. One can probably argue that IBM may have even saved a few along the way.
As far as Linux on the desktop, you obviously wish it doomed to failure. Why on earth would anyone wish an effort like giving every computer user on earth the best software for free to fail?
Where is the proof of this? And how did a discussion about RedHat and AOL merging lead to Slack bashing? (Yes, FUD about demise is bashing...)
Slackware is as "up to date" as any distro around (as far as having the latest updates to server software. It provides simplicity for those who know what they are doing.
As for the idiots who pile on and say Slackware is out of date, grow up. Use your auto-installer and keep to yourself, please.
AOL has done a lot for the net by getting a lot of people online in places that would not otherwise have had access.
That's exactly the problem.
Elitism based on restriction of knowledge is shallow.
Sure, many of these people are lamers who ask stupid questions.
No argument here, they ruined Usenet.
Did naive people ruin it or did porn? Come to think of it, porn on the internet existed before AOL..
But they learn.
I've seen very few with any interest in learning, but many who act as Usenet parasites.
Parasites are an unfortunate side effect, but to broadly paint newbie users as parasites is shallow.
And then they can come to contribute.
Who needs the input of a plebian?
By plebian I assume you mean someone who is less of a geek than you are. That would include omeone who has never programmed, someone who has no concept of file permissions, or even someone doesn't know what a disk drive is, I assume. Well you know what? Not all knowledge is technical. (Philosophical aside: Do I resent the fireman who saved my house when he doesn't understand the engine in his truck?)
Diversity is a GOOD thing, but in order to have diversity, we do have to put up with a bit of noise. That's life.
What does diversity have to do with the trailer trash of the Internet?
What does elitism have to do with the spirit that created the internet?
The real problem with AOL is not the users, but the fact that AOL builds a kind of fake internet that tries to contain its users inside a mall full of commercials.
The problem is the users, when they invade Usenet and ask unending stupid questions.
The stupid question is the one not asked. Answer politely and you may even spark someone's interest.
Wary yes, but afraid? Fear leads to acquiescence. The only way to defeat a bully without principles is to defy that foe at every turn. Make no mistake, Microsoft is potentially the greatest threat to to the free flow of information in the world. Only in relentlessy, loudly, and repeatedly calling Microsoft to task for every attempt to control markets and information, and in supporting alternatives to the MS poison at all times can proponents of the free flow of information hope to succeed.
No, it isn't a laughing matter. But believing a Microsoft victory is fait accompli is akin to collaboration.
Just because microsoft can pay enough people to troll slashdot and mod-up posts that praise microsoft for things they haven't done yet, doesn't mean they don't.
Granted I disregarded the educational aspect. I still suspect though, that when the server becomes more of a need than an experiment, and costs are taken into account, one who implements an apache server is rarely going to put it on windows.
Hey,
They _were_ an evil company. But they found religion. Maybe people (and corporations) can change... Besides, they threw a great party at NYC Linuxworld...
If it's Schumer so be it. More power to him. Once XP is released you can say good bye to any non MS technology running on windows.
The real question is:"When is some brave soul going to insist that the United States government cease subsidizing Microsoft through the buying of their software?"
Who has McCain's number?
Perhaps you should also say try using Mandrake for 7 years and see how much you've learned about Linux. One of Slackware's strenghts is that it inherently (through documentation and method) teaches general Linux techniques rather than distro-specific tools.
You can also go to ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackware/slackware-cu rrent/slakware/x1 Download all files into a holding directory and run pkgtool. Not 100% guaranteed success, but easier than screwing with glibs. It's not a bad idea to get glibs current,
ftp://ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackware/slackware-cu rrent/slakware/d1
but go with the least trouble first.

"Trebelish peaks and bassive lows" is just redundantly redundant...
Kinda harsh, doncha think?
Why? Are you part of it? Do you resent people trying to make making Linux the basis for superior GUIs? Or are you too damn lazy to load a new GUI?...
How in the hell did this get modded up?
Where is the proof of this? And how did a discussion about RedHat and AOL merging lead to Slack bashing? (Yes, FUD about demise is bashing...)

I get the idea that it's not a matter of not getting it, but rather noticing that profits could be affected.
Does anyone doubt that microsoft sees nothing as a problem unless it affects their bottom line?
Just because microsoft can pay enough people to troll slashdot and mod-up posts that praise microsoft for things they haven't done yet, doesn't mean they don't.
I'll do that.
Their code quality is mediocre, their business practices unethical, and their tactics despicable.
One dismisses them as one dismisses something that threatens one's very freedom itself.
Of course that may not mean much in America...
Or if apache is installed you make a symbolic link for the directory you want to share to an existing web directory...
;-)
Shoot, with them fancy x-window file managers you can even drag and drop...
Granted I disregarded the educational aspect. I still suspect though, that when the server becomes more of a need than an experiment, and costs are taken into account, one who implements an apache server is rarely going to put it on windows.
is "Why would someone who has decided to use Apache seriously consider running it on a windows platform?"
I honestly couldn't say who has more reasources in the long haul. But the truth statement is priceless.
Albeit incomplete, but aren't they all...
God bless transcribers.

Why did the Kompany choose to fork Magellan into Aethera, and is Aethera going to be usable anytime soon?
