Actually, I could live with that --Microsoft having to release all its source-- as the sole penalty they receive from the government. Make it a one time shot, and then everyone can take off from the same starting point. My guess it would be damaging mostly from a PR standpoint as more people would learn how they intentionally disabled interoperability with other software.
From my experience, Star Office works pretty well handling doc files. But it is true that it will always lag a teeny bit behind because of the time it takes to discover more MS mischief.
One way to handle this is to standarize on HTML or rtf format within your organization. Send out correspondence in a format you like, and resend in doc to anyone who bitches.
From FSH: .../opt is reserved for the installation of add-on application software packages.
What is the point of littering the entire/usr/bin dir with KDE and Gnome programs? It may be arguable that/usr is the correct place for all the individual parts of the window manager/desktop suites, but that is pretending that the parts are not part of a larger structrure.
It is a much larger hassle to to clean/install/amend KDE and Gnome if the parts are in/opt. My interpretation is both approaches are OK according to the letter of the law. It just so happens that using/opt is the clean, simpler approach. No wonder Slackware is the only one that gets it right;)
Notice I have avoided any discussion of placement of Windowmaker, Blackbock, Icewm, etc...
Though no distro is perfect, I think that Slackware gets high marks for simplicity (imagine that!) and a logical set up. Maybe more people would like it if it didn't rely on hard-to-comprehend concepts like using the arrow and tab keys instead of the mouse during install.
All I know is everytime I got fed up with other distros on various machines and needed something to work quickly, that Slack never let me down. I also know that Slack never barfed on my partition table like another certain distro.
At this point those on the side of right have to attack the beast anyway they can. It is not the only arena of M$ malfeasance, but it is one that people understand. I.e. nearly everyone who has a PC has used a browser, very few (relatively) understand the concept of dual booting or the predatory practices M$ engaged in to prevent companies from offering said dual-boot PCs.
So, no, it isn't the best example of M$ wrongdoing, but remember Al Capone went to jail for tax evasion, not murder...
(paraphrasing)
M$' biggest problem with releasing the source code would be getting rid of all the damning comments... i.e. "This breaks DR-Dos", "This breaks Wordperfect"...
The problem is the embedding was done intentionally. The OS doesn't have to rely on IE, but MS has done their level best to make it seem that way to justify ruining Netscape...
I take issue with Gnome as the most user friendly, perhaps it was unfair on my part to mention it in the same breath as KDE. BTW does XP now have winzip as part of the OS, or am I missing something?
Actually it is ready now. You aren't dealing with ease of use, you are dealing with intellectual laziness. KDE and Gnome (like OS/2 before them, I might add,) are as easy for someone whom has never used a PC to learn as windows. The question is whether people will try something else after they have made their half-assed effort to learn windows already. Somehow people still buy macs (even former windows users,) those type of people may consider something else. So might those who decide they would rather not pay the Redmond tax.
The shame here is that Bob Young has lost some cojones and has decided to to go along with a self-fulfilling prophecy, i.e. Windows is omnipresent and inevitable and cannot be fought. As long as there are those who yell kicking and screaming about the beast, some people will get the message. And an eternal free pass for Microsoft is not fait accompli.
As for no need... I have no need of windows. everything I use my computer for can be done under Linux-- and I am NOT a coder. What exactly I am missing out on? Oh yeah, the helpful hand of Big Brother.
It made me laugh so hard it hurt. And do you really wan---
And we welcome you, brother.

According to my recollection, all the votes in florida never did get counted officially.
The present junta and Microsoft form a symbiotic relationship.
Software, not necessarily _your_ software though. Your comment is wrong in inferring that Stallman wants to take yours away from you.

Bill pays you less when you post anonymously.
No, if MS was allowing people to play on the Xbox, they'd still be playing and we'd never know ;)
Besides, our side doesn't get the financial incentive to simply defend anything the anti-MS people do.

Not sure I need a changelog in my mailbox...

so easy...
yeah, I even previewed...It should read:

Only the civil courts will spank them.
Seems reasonable to me...
Sounds like good detail from experience...
Cleaned up how? Go away.
Tabbed browsing is set to be included in 3.1. And Konsole changes are important to me. I was thrilled to see the additions.

Thanks for mentioning this. What do these Plan 9 guys know about OSes anyway... ;-)
Great pie! And look at that shine!
Seriously, isn't this very much like what Trolltech is doing with QT?

The whole "until it achieves ease-of-use" is a damned lie. As Joseph Goebbels said, "A lie repeated often enough becomes the truth" Nice company...
