    This article about Dennis Tito points to the same thing. He says that life is pretty mundane and the astronauts get little done outside of all the things they need to do just to keep the space station running.

    And if there was going to be an objective eye about life on the space station, a 'non astronaut' is probably one of the best bets. His opinions aren't going to hurt his career.

    Why is this worrysome? New technology will come along, it always has and always will. Until we are storing bits on superstrings, or whatever the smallest unit of anything in the universe is, I am not going to worry about limits.

    Now for its existence elsewhere in the universe, that's a no-brainer. It DOES. It's a simple molecule.
    They do not claim to be the first people to find water outside of the solar system. It has been known for years that it does. A quick search on the internet will find articles published in reputable journals showing this.

    As far as being a being a 'no-brainer', one cannot claim that because it seems obvious or simple it must be true. That is not science.

    That's interesting, I tried for quite a while to get the modem to work on a linux box and had no success. I also could not get it to work on a Windows box(i got the mac modem.) Maybe it's the mac modem that cannot do it.

    I have AT&T, only because I get if for free because my wife works there. I also have DSL because AT&T has hardware specific modems, and only for Mac and Windows. As far as I see from the FAQ, Comcast is the same.

    Also, you can't run any kind server with AT&T. The only real plus side is that it's faster.

    The first real useful application of programming for me was writing programs to determine optimal seating positions or hands for all those made up poker games like 'Screw Your Neighbor'. I'd brute force the games on a couple of million decks and later use the stats to fold, stay or just sit out. It was time well spent.

    I spent last year working for a porn company and this year looking back. You think it's easy? Go read Porncity BBS for a few weeks and you won't be so excited. Most people who start a pay site get killed by unexpectedly high bandwidth bills( my company paid 250K/month before it took them out) or they find out it's too much work to post to TGPs(thumbnail gallery posts) or to make AVS sites(adult verification sites). A porn site requires a lot of work, a lot of money, or both. Especially if you want to make a living out of it.

    I read a lot of posts, but not all 400, so sorry if this has been said.

    The last company I worked for was a free hosting company. Passwords were stored as plain text in a database(I did not set this up.) Once I selected out the 10 most common just for fun. 1 out of 40 people used 'password'. This was out of 50,000 users. I cannot remember the rest but the top 10 accounted for about 35-45% of all the passwords.

    For me, usenet is the richest, most organized and accessible source of technical information out there. The only thing better than usenet is the usenet archives. Only rarely have I not been able to find solutions to problems I could not solve. It has saved me countless hours and increased my knowledge immensely. Regular search engines have become almost useless, but the usenet is just as good as it was when I started using it 10 years ago. I hope that it will stay that way forever.

    Usenet definitely changed my life and for that I am grateful for Jim Ellis and am sad to hear that he died, especially so young.
