One of my favorite local shops solves this problem without explicitly labelling any spots off limits to computers.

Only about half of teh tables have power outlets nearby.

I'm not sure if it is intentional or not, but either way it seems to work at keeping a good balance. Though as laptop batteries last longer, it might not be as effective

  2. Free Source Software on The Semantics of Free Software vs. Open Source · · Score: 1

I don't remember exactly where, but I've seen the term "Free Source Software", and I really like it.

It seems less confusing than "Free Software" and still has the dichotomy with "Open Source".

What I meant (really... errr ;) to say was that it wouldn't be a license violation if they hadn't removed the copyright notice. Consider me now properly educated on the matter.

Yes. Yes it was. Just finished with further research on the matter. So basically this isn't a license violation, its just obnoxious.

The BSD license has an "advertisment" clause that requires the software give credit to the developers.
This is contrary to the GPLs "no additional restrictions" clause. Thus you cannot just take code from a BSD licensed project and import it into a GPL licensed project. Not legally at least.

Yeah, that sucks. However with a combination of Stuffit for Linux, ill2svg, and Sodipodi you should be able to play with it under linux. In fact, I'm going to give it a try.

  7. All Part of the Content Control Conspiracy on Intel Goes for Display Encryption · · Score: 1
I've always believed in the GPL and what it stands for. I think software and general information freedom are very important things. However, until recently, I thought RMS and others who have been talking about the sky falling were being paranoid. They were seeing what I was ignoring. Along with the DVD encryption issue and now with this, I'm beginning to fear RMS's nightmare might become a reality. I would hate to live in a world where information was so tightly controlled, in a world where is it not only encouraged to horde information, its the law.

I'm sure this is just another step amoung many that the corporations who are coming to run the world will take to ensure that they can squeeze every last cent out of their good little consumers. I'm a big fan of capitalism; I love the idea that a child who grew up in the worst of circumstances can beat the odds, become a millionaire and make a difference in this world, but the current state of affairs is ridiculous. Everyday we slide closer and closer to living in a plutocracy. I don't believe there is an ideal form of government, and I don't know what the optimal one is, but something has got to change here.

  8. Can you say "GPL Violation"? I knew you could. on Real Time Linux, Now Patented · · Score: 4
From the preamble to the GPL:

Finally, any free program is threatened constantly by software patents. We wish to avoid the danger that redistributors of a free program will individually obtain patent licenses, in effect making the program proprietary. To prevent this, we have made it clear that any patent must be licensed for everyone's free use or not licensed at all.

  10. NTFS does "Logging" on Linux in the Enterprise: Fact vs. FUD · · Score: 1

It obviously sucks for MS to spread lies about Linux, but we shouldn't spread lies about them.

NTFS is a logging filesystem, which to my understanding is basically the same thing as journalling (each transaction is written to a log (or journal) and then is only written to the appropriate place on the disk afterwards, then the transaction is marked as complete)

Also, AFAIK, XFS is not actually yet available for Linux, though it will be in the near future.

Linux advocacy is great, but we should make sure and get the facts straight.
